Finally got round to watching the Cincinnati Kid last night... really enjoyed it and McQueen is as cool as ever..although whenever i see him in films he looks older than his years... in the Kid he must have been real life about 35 but he looked more like 50..maybe hard living?

Any how a classic and up there with Rounders for best Poker Movie

Watched a film called 'fish tank' on Sunday. British film from 2009, about a guy who enter's an already troubled family. It's the story of how he effect's their lives. I loved it! Kept you guessing, the director spotted the lead girl arguing with her bf at a train station and gave her the role. Gritty and realistic. 8/10

DREDD

OK so everyone know who Judge Dredd is ?..Famed hero of the 2000AD comics ..dispenser of Justice in a despotic future where we all live in huge sprawling cities filled with crime and murder at every turn...future? ...Hmmm sounds a little like a Saturday night in Nottingham to me...

OK we have that straight...

A few years back Stallone done Judge Dredd and knocked out a reasonable effort in his own square jawed way. Quite why someone felt the need to do it all again escapes me..

Apparently the star is Karl Urban.. I have to take the makers word for it as the star kept his helmet on for the entire film..so all we actually saw of him was his beautifully chisled jaw coated in the most perfect designer stubble. I mean really it could have been anyone under there...and that pretty much was our insight to Mr tough 'take no shit' Judge Dredd..no back story no sense of character..just there you go Bad Ass get on with it..
So this short but sweet outing sees him take a rookie out on their first day..get trapped in a monstrous tower block with hordes of killer gang members run by a severely scarred super model..What ensues is an ensemble of action set pieces..which are visceral and loud until the inevitable conclusion.

So we have a slick well made action film with absolutely no soul, point or direction, in the end I'm not sure whether Dredd was the title or the feeling you get as the film rolls on..

Enjoyable to the point where its violent and noisy, but disappointing when so much more could have been made of an iconic franchise that had already been picked up and done seemingly better..

Wreck it Ralph.

Complete rubbish.

Far too many American cultural references for a British audience.

Jake enjoyed it though.

2/10 - only scored that high because I love Sarah Silverman.

Wreck It Ralph is a classic ta!

Safe Haven

I do like a bit of Lasse Hallstrom...The Cider House Rules, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, but the two leads in this aren't up to the job. You need a Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) for this sort of thing to work, and Josh Duhamel, him out of Transformers, and Julianne Hough weren't up it imo.

Pleasingly slow and smouldery but it's all been done a lot better.

Arbitrage

Richard Gere is a billionaire who manages a hedge fund with his daughter, that he is about to sell up for mucho dinero. Whilst on a jolly he smashes up his motor with his bit on the side in it and flees the scene.

Calls someone to pick him up so his wife, the public, his buyers or all 3 don't find out what he's been up to and then things start to unravel...

Nothing special, but a watchable movie with Roth playing his usual twitchy irritating self and Gere quite at home as a sociopathic billionaire...

Taken 2, lazy remake, ran out of ideas. Got really bored in the second part.
First half was ok. Have a massive crush on his wife though which adds at least or point

Hansel & Gretel - Witch Hunters

After inexplicably being left alone in the woods one night by their father who was never to return, young H & G find a house of candy inhabited by a rather mean witch who seems intent on eating them. After dispatching said witch the siblings decide this is a pretty good career move and embark on a life of hunting down ugly birds who can fly on old bits of random wood.

So the classic tale brought screaming into the 21st century with mucho gore and inventive killing techniques.

A fast paced and reasonably enjoyable romp for those of us that like putting our brains in neutral and the witches come with full on demonic countenances for added effect... Short at 88 minutes and actually felt even shorter than that, which didn't really lend to much of a plot or character development but hey ho at least you got a full dose of bloody splodgy bits and Gemma Arterton ( obv the G girl ) wears the tightest leather trousers i have seen for quite some time and has the perfect bottom to fill them..

Deese effort
