Thanks for the welcome James. The Tribeca days were the best and I do still have contact with a few of the old 1808gang lads although many have fallen by the wayside.

To finish on the golf .............. The drives this guy hit were awesome. They were literally impossible to follow. There came a point in every drive where the ball, having been travelling about 6 feet off the ground, suddenly started to climb and climb until everyone watching had lost site of it. All the range balls they hit ended up way beyond the boundary of the driving range. We all finished off watching them hitting 4 irons onto the 385 yard par 4 18th green.

My wife's just told me his name was Mark but can't remember his surname.

Welcome Pop/Elsa...the 1808 gang lol, seems an age ago...

Thanks Marc Shocked)

Popdog that story was insane. I've seen some big hitters in my time and I also hit a long ball so to hear you talk about those sort of distances is insane.

When people talk about how far they drive the ball it's hillarious. I think there is an equation that most people use for figure out their average driving distance:

(Downwind + downhill + hard ball + 40C heat + 0% humidity) + Sunday best drive = "I hit the ball like 280"

I don't see many pro's hitting it passed me when I'm swinging ok and after using gps my av drive is 270-280 on the flat/no wind.  I can hit driver 260 off a bare lie too thanks to my local course having fairways as tight as concrete.

Ok enough of my bragging, back to the diary...

What is it that enables someone to hit such a long drive? Just purely great technique and power or should power not matter past a certain point?

Club head speed, so 3 things:

Power obv
Technique, critical
Arc length, obv taller you are further you can swing faster the club head will be.

Well first off there was no exageration in the distances I mentioned. The two guys were both built like brick sh*t-houses and did as much wieght training as they played golf.
Both their swings were extremely compact with the tightest right elbows I've seen. They maintained that the distance was due to all these factors but in particular the timing of the release of the wrists generating immense clubhead speed. They did a short tuition for the guys and myself and certainly with me they concentrated on compacting my swing and, raising the clubhead at the top of my backswing. Pretty standard stuff that any good pro could have done, but boy could they hit a ball.

Last bit on this long driver story. So at the risk of boring everyone rigid, here goes ....................

The thing I forgot to mention was probably the most awesome and puzzling of the whole session. At one point this guy, Mark, picked up a handful of balls and dropped them onto the grass. He then started talking about plugged lies and the difficulties of getting the ball out clean. Hr then proceeded to stamp all the balls into the ground. I mean all the way into the ground, with just a tiny top-section of ball showing. He asked if anyone had their clubs with them and picked out a 9 degree driver belonging to one of the guys watching. He hit every ball from the ''plugged'' lie about 300 yards. The amazing thing was that there were no marks left on the grass, no divot, just a nice round hole where the ball had been. It looked like someone had scooped out a hole with one of those ice-cream scoops. He wouldn't tell us how he did it and I've puzzled on this ever since. We all theorised that he was somehow slapping the ground with the clubhead just before inpact and making the ball literally jump out of the hole.
