Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley close to striking a takeover deal for Newcastle United. £300m believed to have been offered.

Pragmatism appears to have taken hold ahead of the January transfer window and a team struggling in the league.

That might be a case of better the devil you know.

Ms Staveley is as sharp as a tack, but she's a trader, a wheeler-dealer. I can't imagine her designs on NUFC are altruistic, she only invests for one reason - to make money.

This would-be deal trundles on oh-so-predictably.

Miss Staveley, who previously help sell Man City & tried to but Liverpool, insists she will "run it as a business".

On that, you can bet your house.

I don't think anyone objects to a club being run as a business. That would be a considerable upgrade on what we have now.

Jamie Carragher: Ambition, geography and finances are what players consider before moving clubs - Newcastle tick none of those boxes

Meh.  As a Londoner I’d love to live in the northeast.  Location is much nice than many clubs imo, including Liverpool obviously.

Ha.

Have to say, he was mightily impressive IMO.

A confident and assertive 'keeper makes a huge difference.

Don't see how Lascelles/Shelvey don't go to WC now either. Two most important players.

I played basketball years ago with Lascelles dad.  He was a pro in England for a decade great athlete and player and lovely guy.  Must be really proud of his son.

Unbelievable what rafas done, he’s just class. It’s ridiculous how important it is he stays, we need that new owner. A lot of talk about how good Shelvey and Lascelles have been, which is rightly deserved but special shoutout to Diame and dummett, the two most improved players for me

Couldn’t really have asked for a better season. A major wobble mid way through but beyond that finished quite comfortably.

Sunderland down and Pardew and Carver relegating WBA is just icing on the cake.

Some gamble by Ashley.  He likes a bet though.  £37.5m more than the previous seasons EPL wage bill in the championship.   Funny how people say he never spends the money.
