I very nearly check raised the flop, which I think I should have done.

Is this a call on the river, cos I'm finding it hard to see what I'm beating?...

CALL! if villain is good your range is so weak and underrepped most of the time call is +EV. Bet-size is scary though.

Is it really bad to play this faster on the flop with so many draws about?? I think I would c/r the flop, and look to action from a draw...

He finalled the 08 WSOP event that Ted Forrest finished second in. I remember thinking, "How?" because he was bloody awful.
