"The best player in Luton-that`s not tongue in cheek"

Racing Post columnist Graham Wheldon, who has played in the World Series of Poker is the subject of this weeks turbo interview

Age/Pro Amateur?

Just turned 40.Sigh.I dont play the game for a living,so amateur

What is your nickname and how did you get it?

BPIL.It stands for best player in Luton.Originally some thought it was tongue in cheek but it wasnt

Where are you based?

Cambridgeshire.Close enough to London to make the Vic manageable

How long have you been playing Hold`em Poker?

Around ten years.I started playing live at the Gutshot in London about six or seven years ago

What is your biggest win?

Im still awaiting that first major bank.I just need that bit of luck at a key stage.Im proud of my WSOP  cash-rate,though,which is currently four from 14.One day!

Part 2 coming up......

I thought it a most splendid article, full of very wise words. He clearly has a keen eye for legendary players.

What is your local/favourite casino?

The G casino Luton is my local.I play there 2 or 3 times a week and love the place
My favourite is the Venetian in Vegas. If Luton was run as well as the Venetian i would have a different answer.

Describe your game style?

Generally aggresive and getting more so the longer i play.you cant be that one dimensional, however, and always have to adjust to the table whatever level your playing at

What is you preferred format and why?

I only ever play live tournaments.Cash poker doesnt do it for me.Im in it for the competition more than anything.

What triggered your interest in poker?

A combination of watching Rounders and my first Vegas trip back in 1999

Whats your table image?

I refuse to wear shades,a baseball cap,a hoodie,or any of that crap.Ocassionally the iPod will go on if im tired but, otherwise, theres way too much monkey see monkey do when it comes to how people dress and behave at a poker table

Who is your poker hero?

This will probably suprise people but they are Tony Kendall and Kevin O`Leary.Tikay is just a legend, while Kevin is the ultimate poker pro, only playing when he considers there to be value.A lot of the supposed bigger names in poker would kill for his consistency and strike-rate.

Favourite poker slang or jargon?

I try to steer clear of jargon whether im writing about racing or poker,Its unnecessary and only puts off newcomers

Best bit of poker advice recieved?

If you`ve got an ace,go all in.Most of the time they cant call-Dick Lynch,a multi-dimensional Luton legend.

Recommend a poker book or film

Rounders. An absolute classic.Ive probably seen it 20-odd times

Name an up and coming young player

Theres a lot of young talent about to explode out of Luton, including,Gary banks,Chris Poulton,Alex Martin, and Dean Morris.

What do you do in your downtime?

Gambling pretty much takes up all my time. Some would consider it sad but, until the day comes when i wake up and would rather do something else, its unlikely to change soon.I asked Lisa-Marie out from Sky poker the other night, but she said men that have more hair on their arms than i have on my head, dont really do it for me.

It's in today's Racing Post. Word for word. Though I missed the Lisa Marie bit.

Legend, me. It said so. In the Racing Post.

I am still unsure how watching little girls playing rounders helped to motivate you to take up the game sir.
