My initial plan was to do a combination of both.

I like the idea of the treadmill with a huge incline but I don't enjoy cardio training. As Boldie says, good game that 'cause I haven't really got a choice.

I'll be increasing Ronnie's walks but I can't do more than 5 or 6 miles with him because of his legs.

I'll also be changing his walks to put a few hills in there.

Anybody know of any decent hills around Nottingham?

I live at the top of a bloody big hill!

It's not one that I'd like to drive to and walk up though to be fair.

I think Wollaton Park will do the trick at first. I can drive there and walk up and down the same hill from different directions.

Cheesy  I wasn't expecting you to.  From where you are you can drive West and on the other side of the M1 there's some lovely walks.

Think of Ronnie's balls ffs!  Think you're going to have to do quite a lot miles without him as well.

Just got back from the gym.

I didn't train yesterday because I had to fetch Ronnie from his kennels so today was dumbell challenge day.

Unfortunately it didn't go well at all. I just managed to stay at the 40s but I really feel like I've hit a stumbling block. To be fair I said a while ago that things would slow down at 40kg but I was hoping to have increased a bit by now.

I did some cardio work today as a starter to this hill walking thing and that might not have helped.

Also during my first chest excercise which was a machine press I felt some pain in my shoulders which may have affected me mentally.

All in all it wasn't the worst session but I really want to get off the 40kgs!!!

I split my cardio in to 2 separate session today.

I did 15 minutes just incline walking at 6kph.

I followed this with my regular chest routine as well as a shortened abs session.

After I'd finished chest I did another 5 minutes incline walking.

Obviously I'll increase these times as I go on but I can't deny the last bit was hard work.

My main problem with the cardio stuff is boredom. I think if I can keep it down to 15 minute sessions I'll be ok.

Any thoughts on doing the following:

15 mins cardio
20 mins abs
15 mins cardio
30 mins weights
15 mins cardio

Is it ok to break up cardio like this or would it be better doing the 45 minutes in one block?

i think you need to carry a rucksack from the start mate cos you will need to carry food water clothing etc so get used to it from the start.

i would be quite happy to do a couple of training  walks with you i am quite missing it !!

we walked allot up bragate park in Leicester but they are mole hills in comparison,

before i do it again... i think we planning same for next year i would deffo go to derbyshire the peak district to train,

i put in loads of miles training but not loads of hills!!

Yeah thought about the rucksack but I'd feel a prize twat in the gym with it on.

My pace on the treadmill was 4mph which would do the 3 peaks in 6 hours. Obviously my target will be around 12 so I guess the increased pace makes up for the lack of rucksack.

Will carry one on regular walks though definitely.

I'll be scheduling some decent hill walks in some time soon. Will let you know when and where.

Yorkshire is the plan.

National one is way too much driving.

Far more beneficial to do the 45 mins in one block as you're trying to build endurance. But no problem starting off with 15 minute chunks and building it up.

Also far better getting out and walking than doing it on a treadmill.  The treadmill simulates the general exercise, but obviously the surface is different underfoot and therefore the muscles work differently.  Probably a similar thing to using a machine compared to free weights?  The other thing is that doing anything on a treadmill is dull.  Get outside and walk somewhere interesting, far less boring and monotonous. Listen to music on an MP3 player if that's your thing (which I do when I run), or even download some audio books or podcasts to listen to as you go if that's your bag.

If you're going to be carrying weight in a rucksack on the challenge, it does make sense to use it in training too.  Another reason to get outside.

Good question because it does seem bloody stupid.

It's the hill walking I'm after and Wollaton Park is surprisingly steep in places.

Driving there is for Ronnie's benefit.

Got a solution.  You walk to Wollaton park, and instead of a rucksack, you strap Ronnie to your back and then do the hilly bits like that.  That way you get to walk him sufficiently and get more miles in yourself.

Might make the hills a little tough though...
