As a charlton fan my two words apply more to my club more than yours but still can link to both

Iain Dowie

sigh Sad

I considered this then realised that at the time I thought he was the right man for the job so it's hard to class it as a stupid decision. same with les reed and pardew. all shockingly bad managers but I'm not sure I saw any as terrible at the time. so many itt are results orientated

in fact I'm struggling to think of many bad decisions without the benefit of hindsight since the return to the valley. maybe neil redfearn

Another God-like genius from the Ashley Ward camp.

This one thing I love about football.  One team's donkey's are another team's heroes.

My Charlton supporting mate is a huge fan of John Pearson, who was awful in a Barnsley shirt.

Souness saying "no" to the unknown Eric Cantona.

"On 6 November 1991, after Liverpool's 3–0 victory over Auxerre in a UEFA Cup Second Round second leg tie at Anfield, Liverpool manager Graeme Souness was met by Frenchman Michel Platini at the end of the game, who told him that Cantona would like to play for Liverpool. Souness thanked Platini, but declined the offer, citing dressing room harmony as his reason."

Winston Bogarde is one of my favourite players - gotta love someone who took £40k a week from Chelsea for all that time for just running round some cones every week.

Gerrard better than Souness ?

Listen, I cant stand the guy, but Souness in his prime would piss all over Gerrard.

It might be a whole topic of it's own but is it just me or does anybody else think past players were crap? I've seen footage of alot of players that were regarded as great. Best looked really talented but most played against a lot lower standard of opposition compared to now, against badly organised and tactically basic teams and i think it just made the players look better.
Players are getting fitter all the time, the game is quicker now, players get less time on the ball and teams are more organised. I think alot of players that are held in a high regard from the past wouldn't stand out in modern day football. They were just good for their time.
In nearly every sport the performances advance as time passes but as there isn't any way to measure it like the 100m we rely on other people telling us how good players were and older people tend to think the football that they watched was better.
It's nice to look back and think that a player was great but in reality Souness was probably Glenn Whelan standard and just a level above the players he played against.

Gerrard vs Souness is a tough one. Souness is better in the very middle of the park yes. Gerrard is more influential through his peak years and better all around, especially as an AM. Champs League final as a make shift RB, 30 yard screamers non stop for about 5 years plus the ability to stick one up the opposition and pass like a hero, the list goes on and on. He's not nearly the player now he was between 25-28 but Souness was arguably never that good.
