Just finished a staking deal with a guy who is a very good player who quit because he to quote "couldnt be arsed2 very nice guy and paid off his makeup.
This leads me to what I've been thinking about for some time now, people should not play poker. Or at least not seriously.
Poker is a very boring, frustating game, in general when you lose X bb's it feels alot worse than how good it feels to win the equivalent. Everybody has moaned abotu variance, everybody has moaned about EV and everybody has probably let it effect their personal life in some way or another.
There's a guy on another poker forum, who has played SNG's successfully for over 4 years, I think his profit is like 25k or something and he has a huge +ev graph, he has however spent hour upon hour on forums complaining about bad beats, saying poker is rigged etc etc he has admitted to hating the game and thinking its rigged but plays because he makes money. I'm sure he could find something else to do which he wouldn't "hate" so much and in return receive a better hourly.
Don't get me wrong, I know poker can be a great past time and it is the equivalent of going to the cinema and spending $40 or whatever, for the people who genuinely do treat it as entertainment and just have fun playing and know how much they can lose, I think this is great. For example, leagues such as "The Blonde League" are brilliant and great fun. However I just can't get my head around middle aged men who play stuff just as $1.20 9 man SNG's, they come in from their job and then lock themselves in their study whilst their wife watches Coronation Street and probably signs up to PlentyOfFish. It is not good enjoyment, it may be for the first 200 games or first 3 weeks, but eventually variance comes and people get pissed off and change game type.
There are so so many people who change game type time after time, starting with $200 and playing 10nl and eventualy breakign even over 5k hands and thinking fuck this and dusting off the money or playing something different. 2 months later they are back again, armed with $200 and ready to play SNG's. They don't enjoy it, again at least after a couple weeks when the honeymoon period is over. Many of these players will be break even or losing for the remainder of their poker careers, they will spend hundreds of hours but 99% of them will fail and it will have a huge detrimental effect on their life either fitness/health wise or relationship wise.
You see "High Stakes MTT" on 2+2, there are hundreds of these guys posting, probably 60% of them in deep makeup, although this is not super relevant and lots are in fact winning players, its the "wannabees" who are attracted to poker and want to be these guys. For example Rich Trigg is very open about being deep in makeup, many people THINK they would love to be him, grinding "Sundays" and playing "Majors" on a regular basis, but the fact is, they couldn't do it, once they were in makeup they wouldn't be able to deal with the pressure etc, luckily for him and other MTT players they are in the minority that can and will survive and can and will make alot of money.
I think theres so much more to this whole argument than what I've said, but nobody reads my diary anyway so probably pointless posting this anyway, its just me trying to tell people to not occupy themselves with poker, its v.v.v.likely that you're in the 99% and that you won't succeed and you will spend alot of wasted hours resulting in a detrimental effect on your personal life.
Justto reiterate, I'm not saying lolstopplayingtehpokers, I'm just saying for those who dedicate alot of time into something or shall I say alot of similar things (different variants) perhaps really think about what you are doing, why you are doing it and what you want to get out of it.
Alot of people talk about game selecting from a $ POV and where you can play against the worst players, I'd suggest people to game select, but do ti for a totally different reason, choosing somethng where you are going to enjoy and get good entertainment value from.
Things such as Karl Mahrenholzes Vegas team challenge is a perfect thing about what I'm talking about, what do you think you get more out of? Paying $400 to do this whole series, sometimes getting cashes and potential to got o Vegas and balllllllllllllll, whilst having good social interaction with friends, or depositng $400 and grinding NL10 for 2 months and probably coming out with an hourly of < $1. The times of people going from $5 SNG's to high stake cash games are gone, its so so tough to get from NL2 to NL200K, the rake at the micros is a minimum of 18bb/100 this means before you can make profit and actually attempt at moving up, you have to be winning at over 18bb/100 JUST TO BE BREAKING EVEN!! How is your bankroll going to increase and you develop throughout the stakes?

Im 24, Ive been playing poker since I was about 14. Admitedly only turning a regular profit in the last year or so.
The reason I started playing and the reason I'll continue to play is because I love it.
Im sure we've all had that girlfriend that doesnt understand, the parents that raise eyebrows and the friends that collectivly think its the same as a spin on the roulette.
But I vividly remember the first time a trapped someone on the flop and stacked a guy. It was a buzz.
Even if I was a losing player and the argument I always put to my friends is that so what if I lose 40 quid on a comp.
Im using my brain, usually putting our value on tilt with excessive table banter, making friends........ not out with powder up my nose or a needle in my arm. Its my vice. In actual fact Im not a massive drinker, I dont smoke and dont do drugs.
So if i spew the relative money on a card game so what? Most do it on fags or getting their hair and nials done.
The reality nowadays is that I play these comps because I win money. Yeh I love it, but I learn everytime I play. This snowballs, you win more, you learn more etc.
The recreational players at the casinos and online tend to be our value?
Maybe I'm a rare breed. Ive had months where ive played 80-90k hands and I still didnt get bored.
What im saying is that for me... I dont understand the pro's youre talking about that hate the game.
A good friend of mine makes a good living at 100nl and winges if he only makes 100 a day....
Not fully aware of the alternative. Would he rather have to travel to an office and sit next to june and judy talking about their grandkids munching on rivita with their mouths open or at home playing 5 hours a day in your pants with regular gentleman breaks.

Lol. You need to stop doing sessions with jblack as he is rubbing off on you . This is a your longest post ever but is once again very good stuff. The simple fact is you have to enjoy what you are doing otherwise what is the point. Do something else that you do enjoy. It's all about balance

Gibraltar is ridicuously sunny today, really really nice weather. Really looking forward to Marbella now with the guys should be v.v.v.good. Was thinking about flying to Barcelona on Saturday for El Classico if I bust the main, but we shall see.
