As for the Ford Focus - I sold my ST170 last year. As a general rule of thumb Fords are pretty bad on fuel (petrol versions - never had a Ford Diesel) - so unless you really wanted a ford - id swerve for that reason alone. - That siad I enjoyed owning mine - and if you arent racking up miles then maybe dont rule it out

Think we're moving away from what Alex wants here. We're talking about a used car, not a new one, and something that is like a Golf or a Focus. So the Citygo doesn't come into the equation really. Yeah true, but considering he has had issues with servicing and repairs outside of the main dealer netork, spending £200-300 a month on a leased car with service cover over 3 years when the car would depreciate a good chunk of it's value might be an idea. Leasing a car can be a good idea, but again not sure it suits Alex's situation. I'm assuming he has a lump of cash to use to buy a car (including what he gets for the sale of the BMW), and so he'll be buying a used car with cash. Getting a lease is harder than it used to be for those in full-time occupation. As a poker-pro with no 'regular' income, the leasing route is going to be a tougher one and also probably suits him less than it would someone on a monthly salary. |

VW Golf is a great choice, go for the diesel and run it into the ground... Cars a such a bad investment though.. Also £300 a month, on a 3+36 payment, works out at over £11.5K. That's without the servicing and probably doesn't include tax either?
Yes, he gets a new car for that, but the depreciation is built in to the leasing cost and so you are actually paying for it with a lease.

Yeah, wouldnt of thought leasing is much use to Alex, more if you have business and want to pay out little each month and be able to claim back against tax, he got the dough, just buy outright . Golfs are good cars, wont go too far wrong with one.

I think it's confusing me and making me think about non car things....
golf 1.6 is a lovely car, great gear box, runs great.
surely once you decide you want to 'downgrade' and be sensible look to go joke cheap and quite old and not worry too much if you put it into a ditch etc

Excellent advice. It's quite good fun bopping round in little cars but if I was going to go down the Golf route I'd definitely forgo the snobbery issues and buy a skoda or Seat. If you compare (if you care) build quality then Audi & VWs are a fair bit behind BMWs - pretty incomparable actually |
