All IT projects follow 5 simple rules.
1) They cost a lot more than any original quotes.
2)They always take far longer than original estimates.
3) They never do everything that was required by the sponsor.
4) They require constant upgrades
5) They eat money.

These rules are the same for small start ups to the big projects such as the National Health Service.

Whatever the project, these rules apply.Never want to rain on anyone's parade or stifle creativity and endeavor but having been involved in a couple of start ups and seen how some projects develop did not want you to pour your money into a potential black hole.

Other obvious things to think about are usp of product, size of market,is it scaleable, can you make money etc etc etc.

Good Luck.

Spot on Ian - ive been involved in a few and couldnt agree more

It actually goes to show that there is a huge development required in the IT field. In most of my experieces it has been due to a lack of IT peoples ability to fully understand the concept they are bring asked to provide and being far too happy to interpret client instructions rather than produce what they have been asked.

For some reason we seem to accept the "its now going to cost more and take longer" probably due to a lack of our own understanding of the process

heres my business knowledge (taken from GCSE business studies and Dragons den)

Make sure if your idea is good somebody cant just come in and rip it off/do it better - i.e. try to create some barriers to entry for competitiors, always get a patent (where applicable), always get the .com (.co.uk not anywhere near as good), never be the first to mention a price in a negotiation, turnover is vanity profit is sanity.

There you go that's about all you need to know i reckon - start ploughing the £'s in

This is how far I've come in 7 years.

Going through some old photos, this is me with "The Lads" from an ORGAN course I was on. Cool defined.

Are you all related?

In a venn diagram, we'd be related by the sections
  • plays organ
  • goes to private school
  • virgin

Wow just turned on the party poker big game, seen Phil Laak tanking an allin from Andy mosely with A6o. Somehow he's got himself sort of priced in and flicks in the call - £31k!

Mosely has AK and shows, Laak doesnt show. Board runs out T226J and Laak MUCKS! Doesn't realise he has the best hand and mucks the winner!

Pretty comedy - he hasn't been told yet he had the best hand.

in one of my first ever live cash games at DTD was playing 50/1 and a guy mucked a hand that he would have chopped the pot (about £250) instead the pot got shipped to me. We both declared A high and then i said o AJ then and he went yeh its good and mucked until someone else pointed out on the table that only the A would play! He was pretty tilited and i was just sat in shock! Since then never seen anything close to that but i suppose 31k bit different to £250!
