It's amazing in this day and age the number of intelligent people that still label stocks "risk free safe investments" and still also believe that savings accounts and isas produce a worthwhile income through interest.

Obv stocks are not risk free..though as a long term investment certain shares will be fine.

Savings accounts produce 0% interest so there's no point in going for that but there's nothing wrong with shares IMO

I don't think anyone considers "stocks and shares" risk free mate, what with all the warnings financial products have to include and charlatans saying "leave it to me" while basically gambling with other people's money, but yes if anyone did consider the stock market risk free then that would be amazing.

What's also amazing and slightly disappointing is how few people in this country realise what a good (that's not to say risk-free) investment stocks and shares are when done properly.

Agreed.  I've worked if investment banks/hedge funds for 10 years and I wouldn't put my cash in any stocks at the moment.  The risk/reward isn't worth it after tax is taken into account in the present environment.

agree with both points for sure. its incredible how many people have said to me in my life "put ur money into shares or something where you cant lose it gambling" considering a) how quickly you can liquidize them if you want, and b) how you can lose you're money this is pretty counter intuitive to say the least, I agree with Keys, stocks and so forth are a great ALTERNATIVE to keeping non-crucial liquid funds in a bank account, and with good advice are an awesome idea imo, thy are not a failsafe to doing ur money by any stretch.

and agree with Dubai, LOL at Isa's/long term saving accounts. they are a total waste of time, id rather leave money on deposit at a casino, at least the IR don't know you have and you can get it quickly.

the 10k pot for living expenses seems rather large if you are going to keep topping it back up. Unless you plan on opening a small business in your spare time then 10k working capital sitting around seems a bit too much.

learning some about stocks etc is probably a worthwhile thing to do for someone with a decent amount of free time on their hands and internet savvy.

Absolutely no idea what your point is as your post was so illuminating, but my view is that the economies of the world are going down the pan due to State incompetence and even if you do call it right then the same State will take a big whack of your upside.  No thanks.

The tax angle doesn't apply to a 10k investment (unlikely to anyway) but I just don't think an investment of that size is worth putting in stocks.  Not worth the hassle.  Not worth the commission.

Played a sick 90minute croquet game just now. Me vs bobby and dad. I crushed them and was 1 or 2 hoops ahead for the entire 12 hoop course but then bobby managed a fluky posting to send me back two hoops so my balls were split and I could not recover. Pretty tilted, seriously!
