Got train back to Cambridge today, spending two nights here because it's my old school's carol service tomorrow and I wanted/been invited to sing in the choir! Got a lot of stick for this from everyone this week, but I'm really excited cos I loved the carol service, it was one of the highlights of the school year. Hannah's coming along to support me too Smiley It's Bobby's last year in school so he's pleased I'm gonna be there, and I get to see old school teachers / maybe some old school friends as well. Looking forward to it.

Shipped a 3rd in the Las Vegas team challenge for the boys tonight as well, which is good. Should've won, lost a 55/45 for 2/3 chips in play heads up, sigh nvrmind - good result for the team.

Sigh at losing my first ccr, going to have to put in some volume so i'm not such a ccr fish next time we meet for a night out. Highlights were the tasty food, the drinking game and James Keys.
Glad to read your wingman skills weren't wasted!

This is Lewis btw, We had a great time, thanks again for inviting us along and see you at the Monte Carlo!

The nightclubs casinos of Luton sure are a match for Prague.

Carol Service TR!

Was awesome! Loved it, miss singing/music so much and being back in the choir I was in throughout my days at school was really special.

Had a 2 hour rehearsal at 9am this morning (eek! sure am ever up before 2pm) then had a nap all afternoon. Got suited and booted and headed out with my Mum and Bobby (also singing) to pick up Hannah from the station (heroically travelled down to support me <3).

Saw 4/5 of my favourite teachers from school, had some good banter, as well as the standard fairly awkward conversations about poker. A couple of teachers asked me "had I finished yet?" (meaning graduated), sigh @ explaining dropping out and how poker works AGAIN!

The service itself went brilliantly, I sang in all the Congregational carols, plus 3/4 of the choir only items. Highlight has to be O come all Ye faithful, the last two verses send shivers down my spine everytime - the huge noise of the organ, everyone around you giving all they've got, the brass belting out the high notes, and the whole building seems to shake as the final "O come let us adore him" is sung - awesome moment.

Top five evenings of the year for sure.

Amongst the usual suspects, I would imagine that only Alex could rate a carol sevice as one of his top 5 nights of the year, & openly write about it.

Different is good, if only a few more were prepared to swim against the tide.

I hope so. It's good, sometimes, to try stuff as far removed from poker as possible. IMO, of course.

Hope you enjoy it.

Just before my flight to Prague I opened a letter that looked sort of serious. It was from my Granny on my Dads side. My grandad passed away a couple of years ago and she lives alone in Birmingham. She's very set in her ways and traditional, was brought up very "strict and proper", Oxford educated, met my Grandpa at Oxford, brought up their four kids through Eton and Oxford as well.

In short, if there was one member of my family that hates me playing poker the most, it'd be her.

So any letter from her fills me with dread as to the contents. I have had a couple of disapproving/ lecturing letters in the past when I dropped out but things have been fairly quiet for the last year.

We were literally rushing out the door to catch the plane, so I just skimmed the first page - it was about my inheritance - phew! Something about dodging inheritance tax so she's giving us all instalments over the next x years or something. I didn't read the other pages, I put it down and thought no more about it.

Went pretty much straight to Cambridge on Monday so still haven't read the letter - I'd forgotten about it completely until this morning, when i got an email...

Its long. She starts of talking about the capital gains etc, then I read this.

"Before I give it I shall need to have the letter of assurance that I asked you for in my last letter. If you are willing to give me this it will give me the greatest pleasure to be able to hand over this sum of money".

I can think of two things this "assurance" could be:

1) This money is for a house, put it aside, invest it, it's not to be spent on poker - fine, no problem, would do that anyway.

2) I will only hand over the money if you promise to give up poker and get a proper job.

Knowing her and my dads family, it could EASILY be either, pretty big sweat for when I read the letter later on this afternoon...
