First (and easiest) change you can make is to become aware of times when you feel it would be inappropriate to be plugged into your phone on Blonde/mails/calls whatever. Whenever you feel this sensation, flick the wifi/3g off and put the phone on silent. They can wait.

Second is more difficult and requires a degree of soul searching. What do you wish you could do more of that you don't already? What/who do you miss spending time with? Once you have the answers to these (i mean proper, considered answers rather than snap thoughts/inklings) take positive steps to be the one who makes it happen, as only you can make the change.

Or just win the £500/WCOOP. Either or really.

Morning Alex.

You make a great point about "balance", but it seems to me that you are fine. Poker is your living, & so it's right that it dominates your life, but it's not to the exclusion of other stuff - travelling, football, piano, writing, etc.

It IS a worry though, this balance thing. I've struggled with it dreadfully in the past, though I'm part-cured now, & there are many on blonde who still struggle.

One of the Lords Tara of Brabazon - there were several I believe, & I can't recall which one - said something along these lines....

There is no bigger bore in life than one who is obsessed with a singular matter, & no more exciting people than those whose lives touch many things.

Or something like that. I'll look it up when I get home, & Post it up here.

Well done on the heater.

Great spot David, well done, though it's a shame that a minor grammatical mistake caught the attention, & not the quotation itself, which I thought a very astute one.  Such is life on a poker forum.

"If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut."

I'm not comparing you to Einstein, Alex, but even he realised balance was key.

Do you still feel as - using your word - addicted when you are losing? There is a difference between being addicted to winning and addicted to the game.

Sorry Tikay, the quote is of course apposite and it's truth frequently demonstrated.

Your rebuke is accepted, my contrition genuine.

Lol, it was not a rebuke, merely an observation.

Hi Alex, You previously mentioned you enjoy teaching helping out with youngsters. Would it be worth considering looking for an under privelidged youth group or similar to volunteer a few hours a week to. Sure this wud help keep the balance and help others at the same time as giving you the feel gud factor. Maybe even try and combine it with introducing them to "your music" I hear Elton and Trycoughski is really big in Nottingham bronx. Anyway I think its great the way you try to be so level headed and remeber Its nice to be nice... Gud luck

Alex, I found that quote for you.

I only reproduce it as I think it is a great piece of wisdom & perfectly suited to the topic you raised, life balance.

Given the wonderful variety of stuff you report in this Diary - travel, pianoforte, concerts, croqueut, family matters, (Bobby, Mum, Dad, Gran), football, you have no need to worry, imo.

Anyway, the quote. I found it in a collection of bi-weekly Golf columns written by the doyen of Golf commentators & writers, the late Henry Longhurst, in his wonderful book, The Essential Henry Longhurst.

The column was dated 4th October 1956 (yes, 30 odd years before you were born!), & is ascribed to Lord Brabazon of Tara, aka "Brab".

He was summing up his life as he reached his mid-forties, & he said this.....

"....First of all, a one track mind makes you a bore, and to be a bore is the one unforgiveable sin.

Take to your heart as many subjects of interest as you can, especially if they are original or new.

There is so much in life that we take for granted.

We are inclined to accept things as of no interest and without curiosity, rather as cows view a passing train. This is a great mistake......"

I think that is an absolutely splendid view. Tom says much the same to me frequently, though with, perhaps, a shade less eloquence.

There is so much to see in life. Poker is fine, but it tends to be addictive, & that is the danger we have to guard against, that it takes over our life.

When you work for yourself and are effectively fighting to survive everyday, you should be working near on every day imo. You get freedom, a sense of your own destiny and oppurtunity to make yourself rich which you don't get in most jobs but the price for this is a different type of lifestyle. People who don't live like this will always say "you need more balance" but I don''t really buy it.

Obv spending 100% of your time playing/thinking about poker is bad but you need to be spending a hig% of your time doing that because otherwise you will FAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIL, at which point you have to get a job somewhere which you wont enjoy as much, making balance way more important.

I am very pleased to announce the signing of Jack Allen to the Goulden Empire stable. I've wanted to stake him for ages and after a lot of negotiating, I have finally agreed terms with Mr Chippyman for him.

Here he is with his chums

And at DTD (wanted the guy on the left but he was too expensive )

Really excited about this "project", will be quite a bit of coaching involved, Jack is very good live, but has played very few online mtts, so that transition is going to be something I'll be overseeing, and I think I'll be quite good at doing because it's exactly what I've done over the past 12 or 18 months and I did it with PJ too.

Jack has a A* attitude and work ethic, which is one of, if not THE most important thing I look for when staking someone. I'd definitely rather steak a good player with a great attitude than a great player with a shit attitude. Jack definitely has the potential to be great and I hope he will follow in PJs footsteps and be a big success!

As much as I hate to lose him as a team-mate, I am so happy for Jack. He is such a grinder an can play a shirt stack better than anybody. He has great potential like you said Alex and he just needs that little more of an edge come final 18 players and he can take it to the next level which he will playing and living in the house and living and breathing poker 24/7.
Best of luck to him...me and him always talked and dreamed of playing the EPT circuit and being on the tour, and this is the first step on the ladder for Jack to forfill this dream. Don't forget about me when your busting elky and taking down an EPT Wink
