Interesting point about horses, obviously we hear about it when they are winning etc, so it is discussed however alex also mentions many a times that they are part of his downswing, i mentioned a ehile back whether numbers should be in the monthly figures but i think it was discussed and decided that it is pointless.
However on the point of horses a question i would like to ask, im unsure if youll feel uncomfortable answering so feel free to ignore but i genuinly would be interested in the answer.
From what i hear/follow those you stake are friends/housemates/team mates and generally good companions of yours. My question is are they the most EV horses you could find or is it more your friendship that assisted your decision to stake. Are there not other players out there with better records live and online that you could stake but choose not to due to being outside your friendship circle?
Also does the closeness affect your decisions financially, for example everyone is knocking it in, some are performing below expectations and you want to end the deal, however you feel it could affect friendship so keep staking etc? I may be wrong but feel that if i was that close to my horses id struggle to cut them off etc without affecting our relationship.
Also you made your bankroll by your own skill so by staking and having to sell chunks of yourself seems a stranger decision than dropping the staking. I understand there is makeup etc but that could never end.
Regardless gl in Prague either way and i look forward to seeing a reply.

Well, as you can imagine kind of difficult to answer some of the questions. But i'll say what I can.
Yes, the people I stake are all close friends. Yes, this is partly why I stake them. Because trust is the most important thing where staking is concerned for me. I cant see myself staking someone that I didn't know pretty well or at least had a squeaky clean reputation built over many years.
It's irrelevant whether there are "better" players around that I could stake because it's always going to be a no-go if I don't trust them, so the guys I have are guys that are both good AND I trust them.
I only have 4 horses btw, 2 of which are part time, it's not like I have an entire army of them! They are at different levels of ability, Jack for example I took on with the intention of giving him loads of coaching because I think he has the talent and attitude to become really good one day, and he's already good enough to be profitable as he is. Same with PJ back in summer 2011. He's now a pretty fkn good player who I'd put in higher stuff if I could afford it. Very very satisfying project, and this sort of satisfaction wouldn't be nearly so good (or even possible) if we weren't good friends.
Yeh being friends with them does/would make it difficult to make certain decisions that I might think are financially in my best interests. I'd like to think we had a strong enough friendship that they'd respect any decision I had to make in that respect and there wouldn't be any long-term repercussions.
I'd have to sell chunks of myself in EPTs and WPTs even if I did no staking. Even if I had five times the roll. You need a ridic roll to be properly bankrolled for those tournaments, well over a million anyway.
Even if it was the choice between 50% of EPTs + the staking operation and 100% of EPTs and no staking, I'd still probably go for the first one. Not necessarily cos its more +EV but because I really enjoy staking and get a lot of satisfaction out of it.
Hope that answers all the questions, sorry if it's a bit vague.

Vague is good.
Dads Army line "Don't tell em your name, Pike"!
Works well in staking. Less is more etc....
Love yer diary Alex. It's better to have more mystery and loads more degen stuff. You are the age to have a proper spin up and make a go at poker. Don't let the chance slip you by or you will have loads of shit like mortgages and life stuff fuck you up.
Have a go at the big stuff! It's no problem if you don't bink one but at least you can look back and say you had a go!

Trip update:
Stato got a nasty KK<AA for huge pot to come 20th in the Eureka main. The guy with aces ended up winning the comp for 140k so that sucked a bit.
Mitch, PJ, Giblin are all flying home tomorrow.
Been kind of a disappointing trip in someways, very few nights out and meals out etc, which are the best bit in some ways. Everyone's kind of treated it as a serious grind trip so there hasn't been much hanky panky compared to previous trips
We've had a good laugh anyway and it still could be a profitable trip......
Stato and I played EPT main today, he bust sadly, I made it through with 84k which is 1.5x average, pretty happy. Was up to 120k at the dinner break though! I couldn't believe today, had the best table ever, was gonna be almost impossible not to get a stack unless I ran horrific or just didn't get any pairs. I had to hero off my stack in level 3 with a bluffcatcher and was right, pretty nice moment, then ran KK into AK and lost, KK into TT and won (people going beserk pre 4b shoving 60bbs lol) then AA into QQ and won (for 100bbs!) so ran very well obv.
Day off tomorrow, then it's day two on Tuesday.
