2011 World Series of Poker
Event #29: $2,500 10-Game Mix / Six Handed

Congratulations to Chris Lee, Event #29 Champion ($254,955)!

Ship it to Chris "Genius28" Lee -- champion of Event #29: $2,500 10-Game Mix / Six Handed!

Four days ago, Chris Lee was just one of many in the starting field of 431 players who was vying for a chance at a bracelet. On the third day of play, Lee found himself at the final table and closer than ever. He was able to battle his way to the chip lead and take that lead into the extra Day 4 against Travis Pearson and Brian Haveson.

On the second hand of the day, Lee eliminated Pearson by winning a flip in the round of No-Limit Hold'em. By doing so, Lee had an even larger lead against Haveson when heads-up play began and steadily applied the pressure from there.

Haveson was able to find a few double ups here and then, but could never string them together. He'd double up, get short again, and then find another way to double. Finally though, Lee was able to hold up and end the tournament in a hand of 2-7 Triple Draw.

On the final hand, Lee's ten-nine was able to eliminate Haveson as he drew a king on the final draw. Haveson earned nearly $160,000 for his finish, but it's Lee taking home the $254,955 first-place prize and the coveted World Series of Poker gold bracelet!

Final Table Payouts
Place   Player   Prize
1   Chris Lee   $254,955
2   Brian Haveson   $157,491

The 42nd annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) Presented by Jack Links Beef Jerky at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino has officially reached the halfway point, eclipsing numerous records along the way and positioning this year’s slate of tournaments to shatter several all-time marks.   Through 30 events, total WSOP participation is up 11.7 percent, with 33,173 entrants lifting the prize pool 8.6 percent over 2010 levels and establishing a new midway milestone of $55,883,060.

Eleven WSOP tournament records have been broken.  They are:

·         Biggest Heads-Up tournament prize pool in history ($3,040,000) – Event #2

·         Largest live Omaha High-Low Split Tournament in history (925 entries) – Event #3

·         Largest live Six-Handed tournament in poker history (1,920 entries) – Event #10

·         Biggest Deuce-to-Seven tournament prize pool in history ($1,184,400) – Event #16

·         Largest live $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament in history with single day start (3,157 entries) – Event #18

·         Largest live $1,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament in history with single day start (3,175 entries) – Event #20

·         Largest consecutive-days starting field sizes in poker history (combined 6,332 entries) – Event #18 and Event #20

·         Largest live Pot-Limit Omaha tournament in poker history (1,071 entries) – Event #22

·         Largest Mixed-Game (Eight-Game Mix) in poker history (489 entries) – Event #23

·         Largest Seniors poker tournament in history (3,752 entries) – Event #30

·         Largest live $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament in history with single day start – Event #30 (breaks record established in Event #20)

These new attendance and prize money records come just one year after the 2010 WSOP enjoyed year-over-year attendance growth of 20 percent and set records for nine of the largest 17 live poker tournaments in history.  It is also worth noting that these live tournament records aren’t just WSOP-related.  In fact, they are the largest turnouts for any poker tournament worldwide – ever.

e are humbled once again by the incredible turnout from players all over the world,” said WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart.  “It has been a record-setting summer thus far in 2011 and we are confident it will continue through the duration of the tournament.”

In addition to the official WSOP gold bracelet events, all other poker-related business is experiencing tremendous double-digit growth as well.  Year-to-date, 79,166 entries have been recorded.

WSOP side action, which refers to all non-bracelet events -- including cash games, single-table-satellites, mega-satellites and daily deepstack tournaments -- are up 45 percent year-over-year.

sh games have attracted non-stop action featuring 96 live poker tables filled to capacity.  The cash games offered range from $1-$2 blinds all the way up to high-stakes competition, including No-Limit with blinds at $1,000/$2,000.  Pot-Limit Omaha, a game of growing popularity is generating more than 20 tables spread at a time.  This makes for arguably the greatest concentration of Pot-Limit Omaha action anywhere in history.

Additionally, the WSOP is spreading more than 150 satellite tournaments daily throughout the 42nd annual event.  This segment is up 18 percent over last year.  (Note: A satellite tournament is a lower buy-in event whose prize is an entry into a larger buy-in event).  Mega-satellites have been particularly strong, regularly awarding dozens of seats per event and helping feed the larger buy-in bracelet events.

inally, the Rio’s offering of low buy-in, one-day poker tournaments called “Daily Deepstacks” have been the busiest of all events year-over-year.  Players participating in the daily 2 pm tournaments with a $235 buy-in are regularly seeing 800-plus player fields and first place prizes in the $30,000-40,000 range.  Three Daily Deepstack tournaments are taking place, at 2 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm and all are seeing sharp increases.  These tournaments continue through July 16th.

ournament Director Jack Effel explained, “It is one thing to plan and prepare to accommodate such a large number of people on a daily basis, but it is truly an amazing feeling to see it all unfold in front of your eyes like we have witnessed at the WSOP in 2011.  We are grateful for everyone’s patience throughout and want to thank the players who have showed up thus far.   We look forward to welcoming still more players who are still yet to make their 2011 WSOP debut.”
On Friday, June 18, the WSOP sat 5,946 players for the various poker tournaments scheduled that day – the largest number of players ever entered on a single day in live poker history.

A total of 408 poker tables are in use at the Rio this summer during the WSOP.  Despite the largest concentration of poker tables at one time anywhere in history, on several days demand has outstripped supply due to the unprecedented number of players descending upon the Rio.

Event #35: $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha / Six Handed
Day 1 completed
Selbst, Lindgren, Deeb, & McDonald Thrive on Day 1 of Inaugural $5K PLO/Six-Handed Event!

Vanessa Selbst is Day 1 chip leader with 250,300.

No one really knew what to expect today in regards to Event #35 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha/Six Handed. This was the first time a six-handed PLO event graced the World Series of Poker Schedule, so the turnout was anyone’s guess. As it turned out, the inaugural event drew an impressive 507 entrants, creating a prizepool of $2,382,900. With the top 48 finishers slated to get paid, including $619,575 that was reserved for first place, the pros turned out in full force. By the end of the night, only 110 players remained, including chip leader Team PokerStars Pro (USA) Vanessa Selbst with 250,300. A little further behind her are Erick Lindgren (208,700), Shaun Deeb (195,000), and Mike “timex” McDonald (181,100).

McDonald, who is playing in his first WSOP this summer, built his chips steadily throughout the day, but one hand was really reminiscent of his day-long heater. Late in the day, Amnon Filippi got his short stack all in preflop against McDonald:

Filippi: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}
McDonald: {A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

Filippi was ahead with his aces, but the {J-Clubs}{K-Spades}{Q-Spades} flop quickly changed that by giving McDonald a straight. The {9-Clubs} turn and {6-Clubs} river improved him to a flush, but the result was the same . . . Filippi was eliminated. "This is the best I've ever run in a tournament," McDonald said after the hand. "And I run good all the time."

While McDonald and company were running good, not everyone was so fortunate. Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Carlos Mortensen, Galen Hall, Sammy Farha, Barry Greenstein, Eric Baldwin, Joe Cada, Robert Williamson, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Scott Seiver, and Daniel Negreanu were just a few of the pros who hit the rail on Day 1.

While many pros failed to survive, others successfully navigated the field and will be return on Day 2. They include David “Devilfish” Ulliott, Joe Hachem, Brian Rast, Layne Flack, Erick Lindgren, Andy Seth, Jeff Lisandro, and Jason Mercier. Also making it through were Kevin Boudreau and Chance Kornuth, the runner-up and winner of last year’s $5,000 PLO event (though that one was played nine handed), who happened to play at the same table much of the day.

Top Chip Counts
1    Vanessa Selbst    250,300
2    Erick Lindgren    208,700

2011 World Series of Poker
Event #33: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better Championship

Eric Rodawig Wins Event #33: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better Championship! ($442,183)

Eric Rodawig started today as the chip leader by a fair distance and then never once relinquished the top spot. He was always above everyone else and even when he suffered a slight dip during the final table, he kept his nose in front of the rest of the field.

With 18 players coming back today, it was a quick jump into the money as it took less than 10 minutes for Jon Turner and Justin Smith to be eliminated having turned up for three days to take home no money. Cyndy Violette, Erik Seidel and Phil Laak all made the money while unlucky Frenchman Antony Lellouche was to be the bubble at our final table.

Ali Eslami was first to be knocked out of the final table having been the short stack coming in. Joe Tehan was next, despite managing to fold a full house on the river correctly, he got chopped up in one pot to leave himself dangerously short and busted disappointingly in seventh place. Phil Hellmuth was the shortest for much of the six-handed play, managing to find several double ups to bring himself up the leader board. Russian Mikhail Savinov, a limit-game specialist was next to be eliminated, followed by David Benyamine - another deep run for the Frenchman but he will have wanted another bracelet.

Four-handed saw Ted Forrest go from second place to virtually out when he called every street against Rodawig, only to muck when he was shown a simple pair of aces. Forrest then got scooped by Hellmuth soon after and ended up going out in fourth.

Three-handed play between Hellmuth, Rodawig and John Racener continued for an extended period of time but Rodawig always stayed in control as the other two vied for second position. Racener eventually lost out after losing consecutive significant pots to first Rodawig then Hellmuth leaving us with our heads up battle.
