Good effort but I can only rate that 4/10 or 367th.

Impressive effort out of some 1.4 million though.

Well done Cos.

Well what an interesting topic. Seem to remember all this being done before on here though.

The problem here seems to be the lack of sensible debate fuelled by the hero worshipping of Tom. Now don't get me wrong, I actually think that Tom is a wasted talent, he should write books, TV shows, nature programs and much more and I would love to spend an afternoon with him drinking tea and talking about nature and the countryside - in many ways he reminds me of my Dad.

BUT.......I think that he is probably trying to put the best side forward for what most of us find to be a bad bunch. Before I go on I must admit that I, along with many others, group Gypsies, Travellers, Fair blokes etc etc into the same 'Category' But still, the majority of our contact with these people leaves a negative impact because they steal, scam, trash, fight, intimidate and generally cause a nusiance to the main population. Now you will probably counter this with an arguamment that this is just the one's that you meet but how else are you supposed to make a judgement?

I think the easy answer is, why would you want to judge all people from a certain race, or background, as a group?
I have  no inclination to judge all people of Asian origin based on the people of Asian origin that I encounter, and the same for any other group of people.

But if every one that you encountered from a particular race, background, group was a wrongen then wouldn't you form an opinion?

Highmile makes a very good point on a very difficult topic here.

If every person from a particularly group that you come across is bad then human nature will make you distrust them all until you have good reason to formulate a different opinion.

It's the same if a woman or man is cheated on by a few partners. They will naturally develop a mistrust in all women/men and it will become difficult for the next one they meet to break that mistrust.

It's totally unfair to tar the next person with the same brush as the last but we as humans just can't help it.

If I had never met a Chinese person then bumped in to one tomorrow and he punched me in the face I'd be a little wary. If I met another the next day and he did the same I'd start to think I was better off not meeting any more Chinese people because they have a habit of punching me in the face.

If I then met 50 Chinese people who all bought me a pint I'd then realise that those first 2 were just bad apples amongst a group of generally reasonable people.

If somebody has a majority of bad experiences of Gypsies, Chinese, men, women, dogs, cats or any other group that you can think of then it is totally understandable for that person to develop a mistrust in the group as a whole.

Unfortunately some people aren't very good at putting their opinion across in a reasonable manner to most which is why we end up where we are now with this thread.

I don't know what's more unlilkely in your example, 2 different chinese blokes being able to reach your face or the notion of chinese guys buying pints in pubs.

You have articulated this in a much better way than i did.

In retrospect i think i was a little hasty in suggesting i dislike over 90% of the hundreds of gypsies I've had social interaction with. To be fair i think the figure maybe nearer 75% , which is still very high in my opinion compared to probably disliking less than 5% of the normal population. I also want to say my dislike is purely based on how they interact within society rather than their physical appearance or their skin tone.

These are my views based on my interaction with hundreds of them. There are some posters on here who i think are trying to be overtly PC who have had no dealings with them but are forcing their own counter arguments. If i have had no interaction with the Mekon tribe from south eastern Timbuktu then i would not force an opinion about them one way or the other.

Was it necessary to call me a bigot , racist or homophobe ?

A few people have suggested ITT that the reason people are sticking up for Gypsies is because of Tom - but I'm pretty sure if there was a thread with people making any kind of racist/homophobic or other prejudiced comments people would react similarly.

There has been the occasional small scale version of it in places but the reason why the threads about Gypsies get quite so long and involved is because they're less likely to get nipped in the bud and deleted.
