In the old days the prize money was often 60%, 30%, 10%.

If the chip leader had a good lead and didn't want to deal 2nd and 3rd might agree to flatten the structure to 20% each and carry on playing, in effect a deal between themselves, a saver, and not really affecting the CL other than money pressure.

They might also agree to save 25% of whatever they win "in running", is that allowed these days?

Ah, understand now (I think). I never allowed that in the cardrooms I worked in.
If the Chip leader has locked it up, why would he consider playing on (unless friends with 2nd or 3rd if you get my drift). If it is not locked up then it effects everything if CL has a meltdown.
It may not be considered collusion but actually is for the 2nd and 3rd to have a 25% saver, because it may well lead to collusion indirectly so would not be allowed.

The whole question of "in running" or even pre tourney savers, also staking in a comp that the staker plays, although rife can be seen as collusion and can lead to many complications.

Just ask yourself if you would be happy 3 handed, if you "knew" CL has staked 2nd CL for a big %. Policing this is extremely hard and realistically cannot be done, but it does open a can of worms.

Any private deal between players whilst the tourney is running that doesn't include everyone is at best unethical and at worst down right dirty and cheating.

Happened in Gala Nottingham at the £500 GCBPT last year (one player refusing a deal and then the other players making a deal between themselves). Pretty sure the TD knew all about it. I agree that everyone involved in the deal should be -ed.
