There is a member of my gym called Vera who is 65 and has MS. She walks very slowly using two sticks and I mean very slowly. When she comes in the front door it probably takes her 20 mins of pulling her failing body along to even get to the changing rooms. It takes her forever to get changed and then she pulls herself slowly around the gym equipment with a look of steely determination on her face. She has done this for 8 years straight. A lot of people feel sorry for her but I see an inspirational woman who has a lot of fight in her.
I have another member called Ian who was 25st and an alcoholic when he first joined. He could barely walk during his first session and the doctors told him he would surely die if he continued with his current lifestyle. I've never seen a guy so determined. Now he runs marathons on our treadmills with a picture of his kids on the screen in front of him.
I have another member called John who is 85 and riddled with cancer. The doctors told him he would die 5 years ago. He never misses a session nomatter what the weather.
These are a few of the members who stand out to me. The vast vast majority have good intentions but never follow through because they are just not fully committed to achieving set goals. The members I have highlighted are addicted but they are addicted to life. Nothing will stand in their way because living their life to it's full potential is the greatest prize for them. Obviously I have been in the health & fitness business a long time and I have a lot of empathy for anybody embarking upon their own fitness journey. I don't judge and people are free to do as they please. But the biggest key to success is mentality. The human spirit shouldn't be underestimated and not being able to help having a slice of bread or whatever is just an excuse for a lack of focus and determination. We all have an inate steely determination inside us and we are free to employ that to achieve any goal we desire. The people who succeed are determined despite obstacles and that is the mentality for us all to emulate if we want longterm success.
At the start the first goal is to achieve a habit. A sustainable habit that works with your lifestyle.
Btw I think eating small regular meals is the best strat. If you go long periods without eating the body likes to store fat reserves for when it thinks food wont be available.

Tighty
Trust me on this and do it today!
Obv no need to post the figures, but record your weight. Do it weekly at the same time (mornings are better).
ALSO, take measurements of your body. When I went from 17st to 14st, there were weeks when despite my solid efforts I lost no weight! I had however lost inches!
So take, And record weekly or fortnightly the following (it can only help with motivation)
Neck
Chest
Waist
Bum (just circumference around thd area)
Thigh
Calf
Bicep
I can't tell you the boost it gives you
Finally, take the dreaded "before" photo in your pants! I know how difficult it is, but trust me in 12 months time you will wish you had!
Best of luck with this, I'm routing for you!

Not quite in line with what you posted Mantis, but out of interest do you have a duty of care towards the people who use the gym?
There is a lady who goes to the same gym as me every night, she must weigh about 5-6 stone and it worries me to watch her go through her routine as I am pretty sure if she sets the weight to high she might snap. Might just be me, but I feel like the staff should refer her to Maccy D's for a 1 hour session every day rather than the gym?

Also, don't let 1 bad result on the scales knock you. When you are bigger, water weight can easily add half a stone

Yeah we do. If your gym is quality that member would've gone through the induction process with fitness instructors building a programme in conjunction with any existing condition. Somebody of that low weight would prob have arrived as a GP referral and if not instructors would suggest seeking such advice. They would build a weight gain programme with high calorie diet. A member can of course decline the induction process and sign a disclaimer and just do their own thing. A gym is only legally responsible for providing safe equipment thereafter. However, good fitness staff would still form a relationship and offer good advice as her membership progressed. They do this is for holistic reasons and for commercial reasons because members who achieve their goals are retained as members for longer

Last January I weighed 24st 1lb. On Monday I weighed 20st 12lbs.
I've tried numerous times with diets etc but end up failing everytime!
Exercise is the key but I'm struggling this year with getting my arse to the gym!

my wife is exactly the same Guy. She can lose nothing in weight but waist reduces and other times lose weight but no inches off the shape at all.
Trying to get photos could be risky but well worth the pain

24 down to 21 really, but the sentiment's the same - definitely not a failure. A drop of 13% is pretty decent going.
