What are your plans once you hit your respective targets? You're both looking like getting there reasonably soon so then what?
Do you have any maintenance goals as well such as staying at your target weight for 6 months?
Morning Matt.
I'm afraid, for me, it is same old same old. Lose it, put it back on, lose it, put it back on.
I have been doing this routine for the best part of 30 years now, almost annually, so you'd think I'd learn by now, but I sort of don't want to.
I like eating too much, I'm like a dog, no matter how much food you put in front of me, I will eat the lot.
I also LOVE "bad food". Bread, lashings of butter, sticky buns, cream cakes, custard tarts, potatoes, Fray Bentos steak & kidney pies, pork pies & allk that shite. I LOVE them. Pork Pies, I could marry one.
So once I get down to 12 stone - & you know me well enough to know that I WILL, & quickly, I don't mess about when dieting - I'll start eating bad again, & it will take me 9 months to pile back on the weight it took me 3 months to lose.
It was always so, & always will be.
It is a mindset thing, of course. If I wanted to keep my weight down, I could. But I don't, I prefer bad food & gorging myself. Then I start feeling bad, get obese, & off we go again.
It's like smoking really. Anyone can give up if they really want to, but unless the head is in the right place, & you really WANT to, then it's impossible.
Incidentally, I must add - I really enjoy my dieting periods, I love them to bits, the sense of personal achievement is absolutely amazing, & I feel so much better in myself when I do it. A diet is not an inconvenience to me, it is an opportunity, & I love doing it.
And I love eating bad food, & plenty of it, too....
Daft, 'innit?

PS - I must add, I find it extraordinary beyond belief that some folks struggle so much with such a simple thing as losing weight. I mean, it's not hard, is it?
But THEY must look at me & mock & laugh at my complete inability to keep the weight off, & eat sensibly, like a grown-up.

Hope to make mine a permanent lifetime / lifestyle change Matt.
I don't take life for granted. I enjoy every minute of it as best I can. Oh I know you can't really enjoy going to the dentist or having a disagreement with your Mrs, but you know what I mean. There are very few situations in life that don't afford you some pleasure if you take the time to look for it. I love life to bits.
The thing is, as I get older, I realise that I can do a lot to influence the quantity and quality of my remaining time, so I've stopped smoking, and I try to eat better and exercise regularly.
I know I might be struck down by something horrible at any moment. A disease, a bus, a jealous husband...
Failing that, I intend to live to be a hundred or die trying.

It's actually one of the most sensible things I've read on this thread. The whole point is that you're always doing what you want rather than feeling pressured to do it and that's why it's so easy for you.
Even at your heaviest I've never thought you looked particularly overweight or unhealthy.
Cycling between 13 and 15st can't be too bad at all for someone of your height. If you get to enjoy eating as you please for 9 months safe in the knowledge that you're going to get back to 13st at some point I think it's fantastic. Stick with it 'til the day you drop would be my advice.

You don't have an inability to keep weight off. You make a conscious decision to eat as you please for the majority of the year then lose some weight when you feel the time's right. As long as you maintain that cycle you're in a really good place in my opinion.
I agree that it's ridiculous that people struggle to lose weight. How can it be difficult to eat less? It takes less time to do less of something. Surely it's more difficult to gain weight? I know I've tried in the past to gain weight and it's really tough. It takes a lot of time and effort to eat a lot. These fat f**kers don't know how lucky they are.

Wow, I never expected that, I thought I was in for a Russell bollocking.
You are a very original thinker. When I see a Post, on any thread or subject, by X, Y or Z, I can almost always predict what line it will take. Uncannily so, 95% of the time.
I don't even try, though, with you, or Tom. And that is why I read every single post by both of you, but try to swerve the predictable stuff.
PS - "

Can't fault any of this Tom. Permanent changes are the hardest to make because forever is a long time. Quitting smoking is an easy lifestyle choice but changing your eating and exercise habits is much tougher in my opinion.
I wouldn't have thought exercise was a particular problem for you. Just doing a couple of miles walking a day with the dog is more than enough to offset the occasional pint of carling that slips in to your daily intake.
I've noticed a couple of times that you don't eat any breakfast or lunch. Is this because you're dieting or is it just something that happens every now and then?

aaarrgggghh.
Everyone is different.
I've never posted on here, despite probably being one of the people who most needs to
Took a big deep breath and am plunging in after you wrote that lol
It is difficult to eat less. If I could eat less, easily, believe me I would. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs but I struggle not to eat
What began as laziness, lack of exercise soon became a problem
I went to the doctor. He said "don't be lazy, do some exercise" No shit, Sherlock.
So I go on a diet, and on the seventh day (roughly, once a week) for about 3 years its like a switch flicks and that's that, usually caused by stress/worry. that's the trigger.
I mean I don't talk about it to anyone (way to change that by posting on here) but man it fucks me off
So I go back to the doctor, to ask for help.
Eventually, after some tests it turns out that I am addicted to Carbohydrates. Which I knew. The "comfort food" in trigger moments is bread. Only because its easier to eat quicker than cooking a potato, or pasta.
So I go to counselling. I am the smallest person (first time for everything) in the room counsellor apart. Once a week for six months now
Still, whenever I get stressed, which is far too frequently, I yearn for carbs. Only now I don't have them in the house. If the triggers are particularly bad, I literally curl up in a ball and try and wait it out. Usually I fail. So I don't lose the weight I should have lost by dieting the few days previously, or the two weeks previously.
So please don't judge. Everyone's different

That's a terrific Post, Rich, very brave, & puts some of my comments in better perspective.
But don't do give up. You CAN do it, & there are loads of folk here who can try & help you.
Join the thread, & let's work together.
I also crave carbs, & especially bread. So I buy packs of Rice Cakes, & Ryvita, & nibble on them, instead. When you are hungry, they don't half taste nice! Add some Phili-Lite, or sliced toms, delish.

Great post Rich.
I promise you I don't judge. I very much believe that people should do what they want and when they want to.
Some of my comments there were intended as a bit tongue in cheek to be honest and I apologise to anyone they may have offended.
Any kind of addiction is tough to deal with. I personally had a training addiction, most people would think that was a good addiction to have but when it rules your life to the point of splitting up with an amazing girl because of it then it really isn't that brilliant.
If you want help Rich I'd be more than happy to try. I'm not particularly sensitive though so expect a bit of 'telling it like it is' rather than a softly softly approach.
I'm really interested in the test that showed your carb addiction. What test is that? I really don't understand how you could possibly test for something like that so this is a genuine interest currently filled with skepticism.
I can understand a craving for carbs but to me an addiction is when you can't physically cope without something.

In my youth I got an incredible amount of exercise. Physically demanding work during the day followed by countless miles with the dogs in the evening.
These days I still walk / cycle regularly, so I'm still reasonably mobile, but age is robbing me of my upper body strength and suppleness. For instance, I used to throw 100kg gas bottles around like they were scatter cushions, now I have to climb on to the lorry and pull them up using my leg muscles, otherwise I'm in danger of putting my back out. So I do a few press-ups pull-ups & stretches to try to counteract the ravages of time.
If you look back at my eating patterns, you will see that I only skip breakfast and lunch when I've pigged out the day before. Paying for my sins, as it were.
I have to echo Tony's "Read every post Matt makes" sentiment. Your greatest asset is the ability to tell it like it is without giving offence. That's a real talent.
I'm also a huge Posh Alex fan, but don't tell him that. (He never visits this thread) Tony told him that I think he's a cock.

Matt
No test as such beyond the usual bloods, blood pressure etc but I was referred to an Addiction therapist. I turned up for the first class not really knowing what to expect, and turned out it was a group of fatties all with the same type of problems
Its very odd really I am a bright bloke, I know what the problem is, I know how to in principal solve it, but there's a missing link to actually doing it .
Once that trigger hits, that's it. Or was, its better than it was. For a while If I wanted carbs and I could not have them (ie not in the house) the only solution was to lie down/curl up. I felt ill, and there would be a huge endorphin rush if I went to the shop and bought a loaf of bread. Followed by a huge low once I had eaten some of it. So the physical manifestation of this all was a pain to live with.

Wow Tighty that post really makes you think. Did you actually play as a Tightend as I imagine that although the weight is beneficial you would have been more muscle and obv far fitter.
I always say that my true fighting weight is 12 stone 6 but in reality have not been below 15 stone in 20 years.
Edit: I was writing out a long post then deleted it to protect the innocent then in the mean time Matt brings up addiction.
Cliffs: my mate has had a blackjack addiction for 20 years javing lost huge amounts. Unknown to me before this he smoked 80 fags a day and was drinking a bottle of whisky a day. One morning he wakes up and tells himself he is not ever smoking again and has not had a cigarette since. He claimed to be alcoholic and did the same with the drink. Woke up one morning said he is stopping and he has not touched a drop even in a social setting since. He says he will do the same with the blackjack one day but he just does not know when that will happen.

Played rugby to a decent level, and a bit of casual Americal football as a tightend.
Had to give up through injury, and then the problems started. All of my own making but mistakes from roughly 20 years ago are a bit of a bugger to rectify when they are left too long.
