Worth keeping an eye on the sale prices, as I got PE both ways for £888 today.

Old man donked it when he was booking, by only selecting one ticket, and it had gone back to 1189 when he reloaded the page.

Evening experts

I have got a lot of points on an Amex card which I want to change to air miles.

If I do it soon I get a bonus for redeeming. Any views on best Air Miles from the below:

https://catalogue.membershiprewards.co.uk/viewpartneroverview.mtw

Plan is to use for Vegas. Help appreciated.

Depends although the choice is effectively BA or Virgin.

Are you looking to travel economy, premium economy, business, first?
Pay for the flight using just miles or miles + cash?
Travelling offpeak or peak?

Having said that there isn't a huge difference between the two. Limiting factor is likely to be reward seat availability on the dates you want to travel - try dummy bookings first to see if any seats are available.

Thank you. Looking peak (June), happy to put in some cash.  Ideally just economy although would look at other deals.

I’ll play around

Obv you need some real #'s to prove/disprove it, but it is very very likely (based on all the times I've priced it up) that using just air miles for the economy fare (you pay the tax only in cash) is going to be a much better proposition than any part-cash/part-miles offering out there.

http://www.headforpoints.com/2017/11/30/british-airways-avios-redemption-sale/

The article makes a good point that using airmiles to buy long haul economy tickets is rarely good value given the high cost of taxes, using them to upgrade is usually better.

I've written several priced examples with real time £'s itt at various times.  Almost always, the best use of the miles is to have enough to just grab an upper reward seat.  Often with various sales on, it is much better value even if you have zero miles to BUY the miles and then redeem the seat than it is to buy the seat and the maths on that is very easy to follow through.

Next best is to line things up so you can buy an econ seat and insta-upgrade using miles into a better cabin class.  Obv you need to make sure the availability is there before ending up with miles you can't redeem and travelling in a class you didn't want to travel in.

For those on a budget, just redeeming miles for economy is still decent if it gets you a direct flight and £100 tax bill.  Much better than paying £400 to "save money" flying indirect.

The offers of "econ for 10k miles + £280" usually are the worst way to spend them.  Quite often you could have used less than that £280 to top your own miles up and redeem for a reward seat right there.  Again pretty vanilla maths to work through.

And ofc the absolute worst way is just to pay a walk-on fare a day or two before you want to fly.  Poker players are poker players though, and either through laziness/BR doubts/disorganisation often pay more to travel in economy than a well organised person paid to travel in Upper.

Not sure what Virgin are charging now but on BA you're looking at £395 just in taxes to Vegas.

Hmm go0ne up a bit since I flew econ last Smiley   Upper in the summer was £500 tax.  Random dates in March/April next year are low 200s to mid 300s on Virgin
