If you want 1/2 games, Flamingo, Mirage and hotels of that ilk are fine, full of people who stumble in, casual players and what have you.
The payoff is the décor and I'm a snob.

It depends on who is playing at any particular time. Some days certain rooms are a gold mine, other days they will be grind fests. Try a few out and see where you feel comfortable. Great thing about Vegas is that there is another game next door.
Drinks are standard comped and tip a dollar.

Builder's tea is hard to come by. If you get a valet who either knows what a cup of tea should taste like or who gets it spot on following your description, tip that valet hard and encourage her to come back at regular intervals.
As someone who drinks the stuff like people in church archways drink special brew, getting a proper cuppa after a few days of hunting is a positively orgasmic experience.
No fruity bollox. No added elderflower. No bouquet of honeysuckle. No Lady Jane Grey nonsense.
Tea. With fat free cow juice. Marv.

The cash will be soft everywhere, but if you find any game that doesn't fit the criteria you can mooch along and find another easily enough.
Some friends of mine have stayed there, it's ideal if you're looking for a budget hotel when playing at the Rio everyday, but it's off the strip.

It's ok but not somewhere I would be looking to stay, unless I just wanted to be able to bimble down to the WSOP everyday. During the WSOP cash games are insanely good, but outside of that no.
There is definitely plenty of choice, but it's easy to eliminate places based on budget and location alone.

That opens things up plenty for you then, what are your dates and I'll have a look at what is about if you like?
Wynn and Palazzo are the best I've stayed at, but I prefer Palazzo purely for the rooms, restaurants and cardroom.

Your recommendations go a long way! Im travelling with ceri rees and waiting for the dates he is available. thinking late June for 2/3 weeks. anytime from the 15th june onwards. sorry to be vague but dates are not confirmed yet......
also I seen package deals which appear to be much cheaper that booking flights and accom separate... any thoughts.....
don't really need an open ticket as im def not coming home early.... could be coming home late if fortune favours!!! and then you would not mind paying for an extra flight home!!
plan on playing some of the smaller wsop $1500 torneys but not the main event unless I get a decent result in one of them, will be punting in some 400, 500, 1k events to.
but will be trying to mix pleasure with poker, so gonna do some relaxing toristy things to while im there. ie. grand canyon, shows, etc. otherwise my head will be spinning if im just playing poker 24/7...... its physically hard when u final table a three day event in this country so I imagine it would be the same there if u get deep, will need 24/48 to recover!!

That's ideal then, the only thing with booking up this late is the hotels are extortionately priced for the 21-23rd June due to EDC.
I'm flying out on the 21st myself, but managed to book those 3 nights via lowcostusa before they cottoned on to the fact even the Nugget direct was charging $600 for that weekend. I then booked the other 11 nights with Expedia for just over a grand, and that was flights with Virgin too.
If you're not going to be giving much action at the tables, and you're happy with the price 3rd party booking is fine. If you play the tables some, you're better off booking direct and chancing your arm at getting comped. No right or wrong way, and it's all a case of doing what suits your needs.
I always plan to play a lot, but then things fall by the wayside and I'll generally only play what I think are the best tournaments over the trip. No point burning yourself out, and there is plenty to do besides playing poker in Vegas.
The nights out will probably take longer to recover from than a 2day spin in a tournament, but you'll need a few of those to pay for those nights

thanks for the update markey, as a vegas virgin, can you give me your experience of the best time to go, I have seen your torney lists for the wsop and other venues......
I was surprised that torneys run from late may till mid july.
does may start relatively quiet then get very busy towards the main event or is it manic all the time??

I always go for the last 10 days in June and the first week or so in July, so that I can play the main events of the downtown festivals and also catch July 4th before I go home.
Last year I stayed until the 8th, so I could watch the UFC before I flew home on the Sunday.
The tournaments run alongside the WSOP, so they all taper off in July and I think Caesars is the last to finish outside of the WSOP.
I think things tend to pick up as you head towards the main event, and I believe they're quieter in the early weeks of June.

I just read this thread from page 1 to the end so forgive me, my head is in a spin!!!
The question that I haven't really found an answer to, is the cash/card option..
Were staying in a house away from the strip, and I prob need about $20,000. So we aint gonna have a safe in the house...So what would people recommend to do.
Is there a card I can get which I load money onto before I go and pay for things like food/clothes/trips out on it and it wont charge me a fee?
I'll be playing some cash while im there, is it safe to be walking around with say $5k in your pocket?
Our house is 6 miles away from the Rio to the east of the strip, is it recommended to hire a car. How much would cabs be?
Thanks in advance
