Daily Report, as @ 06:30, Tuesday July 24th
No bets matured yesterday but Fred placed a couple of new bets. We have Essex to beat Somerset in the T20 cricket and have laid Bradley Wiggins at 1.75 for SPOTY.
South Africa completed an innings victory over England in the 1st test.
There was a lot of talk about horses too which I have to admit Fred didn't really understand.

What's coming up?
The first two quarter-finals in the T20 cup take place today starting at 4pm.
The World Matchplay Darts continues.
It's 3 days until the (official) start of the Olympics although the first event starts tomorrow!

Would Fred understand better if they were fillies?

Nearly 150,000 views in 6 months.
I think this thread has been a success.
Morning Keith.
I've been thinking, on & off, about that Post since you made it. It's quite remarkable just how busy, & active, it is.
For the geeks - that'll be Mere & Tighty - here's the stats. Sandy may offer up some odds, as it is stat-based, too.
Bear in mind the thread is 6 months old, & blonde has been going 7 and a half years, I think.
3rd most busy topic by replies ever.
9th most busy thread by views ever.
Why is that?
It puzzles & intrigues, because I, like most of us, want to see busy & popular threads, it's good for the Forum, & maybe we can learn something from it in other parts of the Forum.
Is it because so many people love a punt?
Is it a "mood & tone" thing, in that it never kicks off in here, no afrtertiming, no bad blood, we just enjoy working as a Team to have a bit of fun?
The variety of recommends, & the different ways they are presented? Some stat based, some eloquent, some short & sweet, some even have bloody weather forecasts & history lessons.
Maybe because so many of us want to learn to punt better, & we get lots of help & advice from the Elders?
Is it because we see regular blondes in a different guise here? I know, personally, that I have come to know, understand, & like, so many long-time blondes better because of Fred.
I really don't know the answer. But I do know it has given me hours & hours of fun, & it's not cost us a bean.

A brief reminder that Camel started Fred with these words.....
No-one else is going to start this thread, so I'm going to start it myself.
Our hero is teetering on the brink of getting back into sports gambling, but is resisting because he reckons, deep down, he's a mug punter.
So I reckon with all the good sports betting punters (and Boldie too) on here, we can tun Tiikay from ice cream to shark.
The idea is for him to start with a bank of £1000, and for people to regular posters to chip in with selections with a maximum stake of 5% of his current bank.
Shark? Me? Fail there, Keith.
I was actually really scared to start with. I was a major league mug punter for half my life, then I quit, totally 100% quit. As a result, I saved a bomb, & began to enjoy viewing sport from a more objective position, not viewing it through my pocket, so to speak.
4 or 5 months in, I was worrying that the "addiction" was returning, but then I headed out to Vegas for a month, & never had a bet in that time, or even bothered about having one, so that ticked a good box for me.
And last week, I must have had 10 bets on The Open, exactly one got home, & I dropped a good few hundred quid - but, crucially, I still loved watching it, I was not viewing through my wallet.
Just a quick thank you to Mere, too, without whom Fred would not have got beyond Month One. He constructed & managed all the Spreadsheets, there are key to it working.
He also agreed to take over Fred whilst I was in Vegas, my Vegas schedule was crazy, & there was no way I could have coped with Fred as well. And the lovely thing was, he took the "gentle touch", the mood, tone, & most off all humour, & improved it many-fold. He understands odds better than me, too, & is even nitter than I am. Which is good.
I've been a little busy & distracted since I got back from Vegas, so Vince extended his tenure, & I'm immensely grateful to him for that.
The bad news is that, I guess, I had better get back in the saddle shortly, though I think most would agree, Mere does the whole thing better & more efficiently. Maybe I should head back to Vegas for another month. I'd not argue, for sure. Win Win.

Why does Fred want to oppose me on Wiggins all the time?
I recommended him at a big price ages ago and nobody would listen. I think its massively underestimated what an achievement that was.
If Farah or Ennis don't win golds which is a distinct possibility its absolutely over.
If Wiggins scoops time trial gold and leads out Cav to road race gold you can forget about it whatever those pair do.
I stuck up a bet on athletics the other day, Fred has no interest?

its very hard for people to recommend bets with you when its a minority sport, just one of those things

As far as I know the thread is not a popularity contest.
We are trying to make money.
I believe we debated whether Wiggins was value for SPOTY when you suggested it as a bet, and the majority decided he wasn't, so we didn't have the bet.
It doesn't stop you having a bet, and if you do and he wins, well done you. Buy yourself a lollipop on me.
I suggested backing Sunderland to beat QPR on the thread here a few months ago, majority disagreed, so the thread didn't bet it. I didn't have my feelings hurt just because everyone disagreed with me.
I won.
I bought myself two bonus lollipops.
Lollipops won taste twice as sweet as lollipops earned.

Why take it personally?
You were right on wiggins at 9/1 or whatever it was. I was wrong, and the thread was wrong. Just enjoy the warm glow and count the cash. It was probably just bad timing, as someone had just put up the Ainslie bet and I guess the thread got caught up in opposing that.
Much prefer laying him at 1.75 than
or whatever.
Guess you are probably just unlucky with the athletics too. Not enough experts to back you up.

Enjoy your lollipops.
I'm not hurt, it did sound a bit whiney tho. Just poiting out that i've been spot on so far but Fred continues to oppose.
I will be purchasing several lollipops when he scoops spoty.

I know nothing about the female athlete you put up as a bet. Couldn't therefore comment, recommend, dissuade etc
I think Wiggins might be a longer price after the Olympics
As I said last night, a major feel good story like Daley, Ennis, Farah: one of them will bink
The thread can then

Just pointing out that i've been spot on so far but Fred continues to oppose.
Fred, in his various guises, sometimes gets it wrong. If he was right every time, we could all retire, & buy our own lollipop factory!
I do understand your frustration, but had it been a "majority sport", footie, golf or whatever, the world & his wife would have a view. Athletics, not so much. My athletics memories consist of Roger Bannister's first ever 4 minute mile, Daley Thompson, & Seb Coe battling Ovett. Grand times......
Keep them coming, please.
