Have been on a webchat with the excellent Michael Johnson

The 100m sprinters aside, which US track and field athletes should we look out for as the biggest medal hopes?

Michael Johnson:
Ashton Eaton, the world record holder in the decathlon, also Sanya Richards, Allyson Felix, Will Clay, the triple jumper.

Interestingly Javier Culson who is Dai Greene's main rival not mentioned

Eaton is 1/5 no thanks

Interestingly Clay is 5-1 second favourite behind fellow American Christian Taylor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Taylor_%28athlete%29  This year they have beaten each other

Richards is Evens favourite in the 400m, which is backable http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanya_Richards-Ross

Felix 8/15 in the 200m so no thanks

Welcome thoughts from others on Clay and Richards

Culson is Puerto Rican  Wink (edit: Brent beat me to it)

As for Clay, think he could be worth a small investment, he's jumped 17.55 this year, Taylor's best this year is 17.63 (achieved at same meet, U.S trials I think), so little to choose between them although Taylor is a 17.96 jumper at best.

http://www.iaaf.org/statistics/toplists/inout=o/age=n/season=2012/sex=M/all=n/legal=A/disc=TJ/detail.html

Looking at the leading times for the Woman's 400m don't think Richards Ross is a bet at evens as there are two or three other runners who have either run faster or <.2 slower than her this year. In fact looking at the odds surely Yulia Gushchina at 20/1 (joint second fastest this year) is an e/w bet on tote at 16/1?

Def agree Richards-Ross is no price at even money. It's a competitive field, although I personally would think she will win. No value in it IMO.

Clay I do like, tho. Triple jump is such a hit and miss event; so little room for error with starting points, crowd, run up, any little niggles and any other factors. In track events, there's more room for tiny errors. I know they have six attempts but if you're not on song early, it's hard to pull it back. Idowu can't be value against him at the moment, even if he competes, surely?

Daily Report, as @ 16.30 Tuesday July 31st

A belated & brief report, been busy wearing my fireman gear today.

Only one completed bet yesterday, our up by Dubai, in the swimming, & it won @ 4/5, for £40 profit. Nice.

I don't believe we had anything else yesterday of import, except Norway in the Olympics Womens handball, & they beat neighbours Sweden - grudge match that - fairly comfortably, & in pleasing style.

The thread was a dream last night. Few of us knew the first thing about stuff like Handball or Volleyball, but we had a sort of teach-in during the evening. Loved it.

Sadly, I missed a Singheee special, which won - obv - but as long as the regulars got on, it's fine, it's not just about the Thread Account. Singhee is becoming quite a hero here, look over your shoulders you high ROI sorts, he's after you...... his ROI here must be quite something, as must be his bets to wins ratio. He is HOT.

Uruguay are 2.84 to win and 2.06 in the DNB market vs GB in the last game.

Must win game for them. They have been pretty disappointing so far mind you.  Havent really seen much of GB so not sure how they have played. Just wondered if there was any opinion on this, as Uruaguay were pretty fancied on the thread to finish above GB

What's coming up?

We have £10 @ 12/1 on GANAS in the 5.25 Goodwood, & other than ongoing Olympic bets, thats it I think.

We have a rare tip from Nick (Dino), which we can look at a bit later, & some interest in the Irish Greyhound Derby from Dog Corry scotty2hatty which I will place shortly.

Fred's range of contacts now extends, apparently, to Michael Johnson. Not sure if he follows our Thread though.

Tonight there is Live Greyhound Racing on Sky Sports (Sussex Cup) from Hove. I have attended this on several occasions, & as a rule, the market gets quite lively, as the Goodwood punters pop down & have a punt.

I have played poker with a few of the Hove Dog Track bookies, too. Nice chaps, but always at it. No, believe me, they are right scoundrels. Nice scoundrels, but scoundrels. Sort of Harry Redknapp types, if you get my drift. Love 'em to bits.

Any idea where to park this? (Note - this is a Routemaster - prefix RM, NOT an RT or RTL).

I am tentatively suggesting William Clay is a bet at 5-1 to win the Olympic Triple Jump

(folder: value/can't eat it)

Pending advice to the contrary.

I'm afraid our Goodwood Gee Gee failed to oblige, but I think we can handle a tenner setback.

1st  26 Time Medicean  22/1
2nd  6 Le Toreador  25/1
3rd  22 Valmina  33/1
4th  10 Long Awaited (IRE)  16/1

Brazil Women to beat GB Women in the footy at 5/4 seems ok to me.  Brazil are 2nd fave's to win the gold medal behind the USA.  Both teams won opening games but Brazil have a slightly better goal difference having scored 6 to our 4, neither have conceded a goal.

Our GB to finish top 3 in medals bet is looking a bit under the weather

Our new friend has just tweeted this

Michael Johnson ‏@MJGold

China huge investment in sport paying off. Could win more medals than US this time. In '08 China 100 to US 110 but China 51 gold to US 36.

Behind the US and China we are currently 20th. We need big guns in rowing, velodrome and track to fire in
