Nottingham used to have an American Football team called the Nottingham Hoods. I thought that was a rather good play on words.

Well you see that IS clever, requiring just a modicum of thought. No apostrophe in front of "Hoods" though? Shameful.

Why on earth would there be an apostrophe before Hoods?

Presumable because "hood" is an abbreviation of (neighbour)hood.

In this context, it is an abbreviation for Hoodlums, surely?

Sigh at old people.

Surely an abbreviation for Robin Hood, therefore Nottingham 'Hoods is appropriate?

tikay is correct.

That would seem to put an end to the matter. *

* Not.

I confess, I assumed it was abbreviated "neighbourhood".

I know what Da Hood is.

You wouldn't call a team the Nottingham Neighbourhoods though, would you? It would be the Nottingham Hoodlums.
You seem to lack an understanding of how theses names work. cf Rhinos and Wildcats.

Tighty's having a larf.
Never in a million years would Hoods take an apostrophe to indicate the omission of Robin.

I'd never have a larf.

A laugh, possibly.

Thank you.

I have proof

About the Hoods

The Nottingham Hoods Basketball Club was set-up in April 2009 aimed mainly to fill the large void in Men’s basketball in Nottingham, putting Robin Hood County back on the English Basketball map.

Over a very short period of time The Nottingham Juniors and Ladies Hoods Basketball Club were also set up to allow a larger forum for participation.

In September 2009 The Hoods are set to compete in the under 12, 14, 16 and 18 boys youth league, the under 18 and senior women’s local league and the senior men’s in the national league Division 4 midlands region.

“Gets kids off the streets, out of their seats and active.” These are the key aims of Nottingham’s newest basketball club, The Hoods.

Tired of seeing Nottingham’s young people fall into the category of “yobbos” or the “play station generation”, local basketball Coach Lee English has bounced into action. Earlier this year he created The Hoods. A totally non profit club aimed at anyone who can walk on a court and bounce a ball from the ages of 5 – 500.

Aiming to slam the stereotypical image of the young people to get the community thinking, the name was carefully chosen to fit local image of Robin Hood another local hero who was smashing stereotyping before his time, but the name also carries a deeper meaning. The image of young people in hoods is often not a welcome one but The Hoods Basketball team is aiming to spin that image on it’s head. Literally!

The master plan is to put basketball back on the map in Nottingham. With Men’s, Women’s and junior teams raring to go, basketball leagues are ready to hit Nottingham in a big way. Providing the local community with a chance to see the biggest indoor spectator sport worldwide. Teams are already training for both local and national leagues.

So watch out for The Hoods influencing a venue near you soon, and maybe you and your family can take part in the team and slam stereotypes off the backboard.

The Hoods football team had already been defunct for 15 years by then.
They were definitely punning the word Hoodlums.

Anyway, I've got more important things to worry about.
Norway have just gone 18-17 up after being 4 goals/points/baskets/scores/turnips* down.

On a complete tangent, badbeat retweeted an interesting quote today.

"A man's gotta have one bet a day else he could be walking around lucky and not know it"

After a little research it seems that the quote was attributed to the Rev. Jim Jones who "bet" that he could get 900 of his followers and their children to drink a lethal coctail in their compound in Guyana in 1978. They all died in this mass "suicide" as did Jones who was found with a bullet in his head.
