Troika is a Russian word "set of three" usally used in judicial, political and military terminology

Three Troikas, iirc was a very famous French racehorse in the mid 1970s. Head family?

Boom!

There used to be, still is maybe, a Bloodstock magazine called "Racehorse", they used to run a "Ten to Follow" comp, with quite valuable prizes. They did one for the flat, & one for jumps. There was no internet then, so you had to select your 10, (you could enter as many times as you wished), then write them out & post them to the magazine. I managed to win it in 1979, mainly because amongst my 10 was Three Troikas. Nobody else seemed to follow French Racing then, but it was my niche area, so I had a bit of an advantage.

Three Troikas was a filly, but she was quite outsrtanding, winning numerous Group 1's, most notably, beating easily a strong Arc field.

I was intrigued by how her name arose, which partly arose from her dam, Three Roses, herself out of "Dual". On the male side, she was out of Lyphard, by, inevitably, Northern Dancer.

The story was - bear with me, I'll get there - that the "Three Troikas" name arose because she was owned, trained & ridden by members of the same family, the Head's. And she was - son Freddy rode her, his sister Criquette trained her, & she was owned by their mother, Ghislaine.

But weirdly there were FOUR family members involved, because she was purchased by dad, Alex Head. So initially, I was not entirely clear if "Troika" was three or four, so I wrote to a learned friend & asked him. No internet meant finding out stuff was not so easy then. He replied it was because of the triumverate of family connections. Thereafter, for many years, I believed triumverate meant "four". I know, I know, I was a proper thicko then.

What pleasure & satisfaction it must have given the Head family to have had such an outstanding filly, & to me too, because I won the competition by a country mile.

A few years later, I won the Jumps version of the same Competition, mainly because of a jumper named "Kybo", owned by the legendary Isidore Kerman, who was a great supporter of Fontwell & Plumpton, & trained by Josh Gifford. The origin of that name, KYBO, was much more down to earth - it stood for "Keep Your Bowels Open". Sadly, Kybo was killed in a chase at Ascot, where he had won 6 or 7 races & was a standing dish the, the very next year. There was another horse with the same connections, "Super Kybo", but he was not quite so good.

Whoops, sorry about that, I got carried away by my memories. If there were a market for junk reminiscent writing, I'd quit my job in a heartbeat.

Back to business, sorry.

I remember Kybo but I would never have guessed it was an acronym and certainly not for that, how they must have chuckled at whooooshing everyone.

I remember Three Troikas too vaiguely, it was around the time of those great French mares Allez France and Dahlia IIRC, I had a nice touch on Dahlia once, possibly at Sandown Park or was it kempton.

How much did you win for your early ten-to-follow victories? I bet noone else did that double.

Any value in the Anderson average vs Taylor tonight?

over 94.5 @ 1.83

Anderson has been shocking recently, but this looks quite low with the added Taylor effect

Thanks Vic.

I am familiar with the "Taylor Effect", but I really have no idea whether Anderson is capable.

If there is ever any decent value in the Darts, Bazzy, Snowy or Teacake generally pop on & mark our card, but we've not heard from them today.

For the Darts fans, there is an (allegedly) "ENHANCED OFFER" on tonights Premier League renewal from Boylesports.

They are offering 9/4 on the golden triumverate of Barney, MvG & Mr Taylor.

I'm not interested in any Trebs or Accas personally, & I'm not fussed if we don't have any Darts action this evening, but there are many who may fancy some of this.

Triumvirate. One of my favourite words.

Vir (pronounced Weir) is Latin (cue inevitable "what would you know?") for man - virtue, for example, being the quality of a man.

Tri being three.

The triumviri (he says, hoping his Roman Law isn't being misremembered again) were groups of three important fellows whose job it was to make decisions on key issues, like prisons, land and general political stuff.

This all long before Old Tom and his funny looking golf bats.

"The Great Triumverate" of golf  was comprised of Harry Vardon, J.H.Taylor and James Braid.

They played around the turn of the 20th century and were at least a hundred years after both Old and Young Tom Morris.

<edit> Make that fifty years.

OK so this time I get the spelling right and one of the facts wrong (although technically I didn't say Old Tom was in the great triumvirate, I'm not going to be a Dick about it, Harry).

It's all just balancing my range.

Thornton averaged 109+ against Anderson last week and he only managed just under 94, no bet for me.
Anderson is capable of outscoring anyone but he's not been all there the past year or so.

Thanks Snowy.

Think we'll sit out tonight's darts, unless something interesting arises during the evening.
