I expect this does Fred's baseball position no harm.

For those who don't follow the sport, this is one of the biggest stars in baseball: the New York Yankees slugger, Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez. Fifth in the all time home run standings. The highest paid player on the diamond. He has been found guilty of doping charges and is now appealing against a 211 game ban.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23578738

The Yankees are in the AL East, along with the Red Sox and the Rays.

I think this was fully expected, in fact he got off lighter than many predicted.

Presumably, though, this being the USA, the Appeal process (during which he can continue playing) may last for years?

Having said all that, it can't be bad for our bets. We hope.

Gotta say, we have some great positions in the Long-Term basket, especially in County Cricket & Baseball.

If we can get Nicky Nacki & AssemlyLineLonga on the same roll, we have some fun ahead.

Yes, it isn't the greatest shock in sporting history, but the sentence - in baseball terms, I hasten to add - is quite a headline.

I used to follow baseball as my main American sport about eight years ago and the Yankees were "my team". His has always been a name that crops up in steroid discussions, along at the time with Mssrs Bonds and Clemens.

The appeal will, I expect, be against sentence, rather than finding, but it is another nail in the coffin of the sport's slugging era.

Like cycling, I am sure it will recover and that the younger generation (Trout et al) will post numbers without the need for an asterisk.

A real shame, nevertheless.

Roffle @ Coral

They have Tommy Rowe at 11/2 to score any time v Colchester tonight. Boyle and Hills go 15/8 and 2/1 respectively. That's a bit tight but 11/2 is ridic.

Tommy Tommy scored five in 31 games last season, all from left-back. This season Poshies have plenty of options at full-back and, on Saturday, he played on the left of a midfield diamond. He hit the post v Swindon and had a couple of other chances.

Anyway, I tried for a hundo and the Barking jokers offered me £20 at 11/2 and another £30 at 7/2. Absolute joke.

The price is still there, though, so recommend a tiddle-arsey £20 @ 11/2.

Incorrect. They now quote 7/2.

We cannot get on at 7/2 if the Recommend was 11/2.

Rebuff City.

Shame really, looked a great bet.

Simon Grayson is quoted as having said:

"It was just people being very boisterous. Hopefully there wasn't anything that was too untoward. You can expect it because it means so much to the football club to win a local derby but hopefully there won't be any repercussions."

Those idiots who invaded the pitch will be the first to complain, & loudest, if the Club were forced to erect crowd fencing to prevent a repeat.

If Mr Grayson (Manager of the Club) suggests they "can expect it", then perhaps they should have taken better preventative meaures.

I can understand children wanting to do it, but there were fully-fledged (physically) grown-ups there.

That mass pitch invasion, accompanied by scenes like this last night cannot possibly be good for football, or for fans. Soon enough, it will turn really ugly one night, & it will all end in tears.

For discussion:

The League Cup brings much uncertainty around strength of line up, but one team that should have a decent line up at League 2 Bristol Rovers is Watford due to the fierce competition for places.  The line up I would guess is the weakest potential line up, given Saturday's team at Birmingham would be:

Bond
Ekstrand
Brown
Doyley
Pudil
Murray
Battocchio
Smith
Faraoni
Acuna
Fabbrini

Can really see the front 2 ripping Bristol Rovers up - should just have too much speed of thought and power - and the rest of the team is very solid.  There are worse 10/11 pokes around imo.

I would like to back this up

I don't think thread has any appetite for multiples, certainly not this early in the season but tonight is a test for a theory of mine which is

- In prior years many Championship clubs, particularly those involved in promotion or relegation battles, didn't care too much about the cups and this was reflected in team selection

- This year has seen FFP introduced, and up to nine Championship clubs are impinged because of it

- Logically the importance of revenue for a cup run has increased because the FFP ratios are calculated on player wages to turnover each June...on the preceding season. Teams that break the ratios face transfer embargos and then points deductions

- How to get revenue up? Higher crowds, of course, but stadium capacity is a limit. Sponsorship revenue of course...but also cup runs, both prize money, TV fees and gate receipts....

- Owners cannot just pump money in to circumvent the FFP rules

I got a hint of this implication for the Cup competitions a few days ago when I heard that Leicester were planning to send a first choice side to Wycombe tonight

So, I looked at the following four tonight.

Watford 10/11 at Bristol R

Blackburn 11/10 at Carlisle tomorrow

Burnley 20/21 at York

Bolton 10/11 at Shrewsbury

Criteria of

Championship clubs with FFP problems (bar Watford, the three above have lost recently or are about to lose Premiership parachute payments which act as a buffer to FFP)

Away at lower division sides but priced as "backable" ie not 1/2 etc

Lower division sides I don't rate too highly. York, Shrewsbury, Carlisle are all finance restricted on squads and I doubt any will have top half type seasons.I saw two of the three in pre-season, saw nothing to get me excited.

So all that is a long winded way of saying, look at the CHampionship teams tonight. Expect them to be stronger than they might have been for this stage of the League cup in prior seasons, and please consdier the Dung Beetle bet above

Rich,

That Post you just made, in particular....

So, I looked at the following four tonight.

Watford 10/11 at Bristol R

Blackburn 11/10 at Carlisle tomorrow

Burnley 20/21 at York

Bolton 10/11 at Shrewsbury

The Watford game is TOMORROW, but we have just invested £30 @ 5/6, as the price, I would think, will only get worse. I will confirm it shortly.

I have no intention of doing any Doubles or the like on those 4 Teams (others can of course), but is it worth 4 singles for modest amount? (Well 3, as I've just backed one....)

I think Watford is tonight, but no matter, my bbc fixture list may be outdated

I wasn't suggesting all of those 3 for the thread especially. Of the 3 others I think Blackburn at Carlisle at odds against tomorrow is the one of the three that really made me delve further

Dung's post just prompted me to road-test in public my theory!

Aplologies, Rich, Oddschecker list the game as TOMORROW, which was what I thought was correct, but BBC Sport list is as tonight, & the BBC are rarely wrong.

We should also factor into the price that one team doesn't turn up tonight, thinking the game is tomorrow.

I missed this originally Mr Dung, but Tighty has bumped it, & we have had a modest investment @ 5/6.

Thank you.

We have £30 @ 5/6, BetVictor, Watford to beat Bristol Rovers.

Sorry bit late but

Gary Mackenzie scored on Saturday and now including last season has 3 goals in 8 league starts for Blackpool

He is available tonight at around 50-1 on betfair first scorer which is a smidgen big and bigger than the weekend despite playing lower league opposition. I have taken pennies at 55-1

Suggest £5 win first scorer best price available betfair (50-1ish)

Suggest £5 anytime scorer 14-1 betfred (better than betfair when i have just checked)

cheers

7.45 kick off live on sky

CONFIRMATION ONLY

Please note, only £4 was matched @ 50, so we have a £1 refund on the Spready!
