That was Ighalo's 20th league goal last night, putting him level with Deeney.

Realistically, we're now looking at a place for Troy boy, with Murphdog scoring late in Tuesday's game to go four clear.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/championship/top-scorers. We could do with Cameron Jerome and Rhodesy both bricking at the weekend; should be enough to give us a top four payout.

in the county championship Mddlesex minus a man batted all day to save their game with Notts, walking off at 6pm 7 down thanks to runs from Vges and Cmpton securing draw points to kick off the season

That was something of a surprise, was it not?

it was

unusual for teams to hold on for the draw there, batting out the final day missing a batsman injured.

early days, but it might bode well.

I had planned to watch the Barca game last night, but switched back to the England Test Match after a few minutes, the coverage was excellent, & the game quite enjoyable to watch, especially compared to the football.  Sky Sports cover cricket rather well, I think.

Between balls, however, the venue's PA system blasted out.....MUSIC. Between balls. In a Test Match.

If that does not result in a letter to The Times from "Disgusted, Tunbridge Wells", I'll be very disappointed indeed.

An utter & unforgiveable disgrace. No wonder West Indies Test Cricket is in such a mess. Music.

How are they supposed to hear Blowers discussing the Victoria sponge a listener has sent in?

Most inconsiderate.

For some reason I have a bet on England to beat West Indies in the first test
It displays the date of the match as 3 days ago
Never watched or understood cricket
How long is left?

2 days remain, & England should win from here.

Or, look at it another way. 2 days = 2 x 90 overs = 1,080 balls to be bowled. With 30 seconds of music between EVERY ball.

No wonder Test Match cricket is dying.

Yes, I'm not sure it would be your cup of tea, it's about as far removed from those E-Games (?) you follow as is possible. Mind you, it's getting closer.

I am not a huge fan of the music intra-game but it is a real challenge for the WI game to make itself relevant to a younger audience

attendances declined a lot with the end of the successful west indies era. young kids began to play football, follow the nba etc and play in schools declined (funding, playing fields sold off etc)

the Antigua cricket board paid $500,000 to host the game and attendances were 10k day one and 4-5k since

they'll make the money back off the British cricket followers boosting tourism for the week, but the music etc is an attempt to appeal beyond the traditional test cricket watching base on the islands

bits and bobs for today please

- no snooker feedback?

- premier league darts thursday

4 games have the draw at 4-1, these are higher odds than we would see in most weeks

- Craven day at Newmarket with War envoy and kool kompany in the big guineas trial

- rajasthan v sunrisers in the ipl. a big game for both.

- the rbc heritage golf. Spieth has been chucked in as 13/2 favourite. would be hugely surprising to see him 100% on his game this week wouldn't it?

how might you oppose him?

- wigan v warrington tonight in super league

- opposition leaders debate on the bbc tonight. i have a fancy, though not the sturgeon value as last time, but an inkling

any ideas and thoughts welcome

They need to understand that to watch Test Cricket one needs to wear a Members tie, smart blazer, and well ironed chinos. And it should be observed silently, to respect those who wish to sleep.

the modern sports fan wants immediacy. has a short attention span. wants action.

the ICC has done very little to promote test cricket or ensure its longevity. done plenty to promote T20 which attracts sponsorship and money of course

it then wonders why the game is struggling to maintain attendances

aside from the ashes, which will always be iconic, there is a real challegne

the "solution" of the ICC is to retreat to the major nations playing each other more frequently but this is a blinkered approach that will not sustain the game in places like antigua, where it needs to grow

I'm hoping someone prices up the Gashimov Memorial chess tournament that starts tomorrow. So far, only Marathon has it on their books. Possible smidge of value there, but I'd like to see other firms having a go first.

The world team championship starts at the weekend, too. Russia has a brutal looking team (teams of four play each match and they have five players in their squad in the top 20 in the current world rankings), but that's not always how these things pan out. The USA tried to recruit Italian-registered Fabiano Caruana in time for this event, but the deal didn't get done. It's in Armenia and that means the Azerbaijan team refused to travel. Be interesting to see some prices. Again, Marathon will offer a market.

Double put Russell Knox up as part of his portfolio for the US Golf.

As a regular reader of the golf thread will know, I have been a fully paid up member of the Knox fan club for a while. I have a standing order in place each week.

The guy is gradually getting there, and just seems to get it round week on week, and will soon put it all together and cross the line first soon.

Having had a week off, and with many possibly not totally focused after Augusta, he is probably worth a five spot, each way for interest.

In the racing today, have the minimum ew on American Hope in the 3.30. @14s

He has a few pounds to find on ratings and has been campaigned at further since his move from Ireland. However he shows plenty of pace, and with fitness on his side vs plenty on their first time up this year, he could surprise.

Should keep idle hands busy for a few minutes.

Afternoon Tighty.

Betfred have boosted a price for tonight's rugby league. They are 5/4 for Wigan to be winning at and FT while everyone is odds on. I am not at all convinced with Warrington and their 80-0 thrashing of Wakefield does not count for much.

Suggest £20 Wigan and FT @ 5/4 with Betfred.
