That was fascinating.
"....AC/DC are not cheap...."
How much would they normally charge for a regular gig, then, & how does it work - flat fee, % of gate, etc?
I always thought appearing at Glasto was a sort of trade honour, & they did it for free, & all the publicity it garners.
Go a step further - "Suueeze" are currently on a UK Tour, & Jools Holland tours almost non-stop. What sort of deal would they normally be on for provincial gigs?
PS - AC/DC is a stunning bet at 66/1, imo.

Thoughts on ACDC to headline the Saturday at Glastonbury @ 66/1 with betfair?
They're in Europe and the uk next June for shows in London and Manchester, with their final show just under 2 weeks before Glastonbury. The festival seem to have started introducing 70's-80's rock bands as headline slots with Metallica headlining the Saturday in 2014. Seems a pretty high price to me
No idea if this is interesting or value or not
anyone?
As stated there is a Glasto sized hole in the schedule released yesterday. They did a big album tour last year and only did one date in England. In the promo stuff (Radio Interview on BBC6) they stated they would be open to doing Glasto in the future and said they would in all likely hood do a UK festival next summer. It won't be Download as headliners are announced, so that leaves Reading and Isle of Wight. If its to be Reading or IoW likely they will announce straight after the AC/DC ticket sale this Friday, - personally can't see Reading paying the money and IoW seems to have kept there Saturday slot open for GnR if you believe the rumours (Friday and Sunday headliners announced).
Personally think Coldplay and Muse are locks for Glasto, and the Foo's seem likely after last years late cancelation but Pinkpop announced this week that the Foo's were not returning there this year (they also cancelled a performance at Pinkpop last summer) so maybe there is a slot open. Still think Adele is more likely next year then this.
It would be a stretch for Glasto even with the recent boking changes - AC/DC are not cheap and Glasto don't pay big bucks (compared with the others), the no metal thing at glasto is a fallacy, metal bands have played over the years but they are rare. The one thing that swings me back towards it may be a bet is the Bring the Horizon rumour, that they will play the Other Stage as a headliner on the Friday - if true this is a huge departure from standard Glasto booking and in the past when a niche band has played they generally book 2 or 3 of the same genre and they may be trying to bury Reading's metal heritage (The Foals are rumoured to be headlining reading, so they maybe happy to bury the heritage by themselves). Glasto won't announce until just before the ticket resale in April, but everyman and his dog will be rumoured between now and then.
As Chompy says it must be a bet at that price and they are def a runner - take what you can get.
blimey. good post, thank you
There are glasto nerds.

I was surprised how much acts charge to play Newmarket during the summer. Apparently it's normally around £100k, which is incred. But then again Newmarket Nights are normally sell-out, and the July Course has a capacity of 22,000. Average of £20 a head still equals decent business. Seen some good stuff up there but still devved at missing McBusted in the summer.

You cannot be serious?
£100k?

Stop it, stop that right now. Let's keep the discussion serious, please.
£2m for a 60 year old bloke wearing his school uniform? Suzie Perry, yes, oh yes, but Angus, much as he amuses & entertains me, that's a bit steep.

Incred!
Guess there's a good chance Bournemouth will pick up a striker in January but for now Josh King is the chosen one and he's never an 8-1 shot to finish their top scorer with Callum pretty much out for the season. Rec £20 @ 8-1 with ShutemdownVic.
Don Williams clearly the value here at $50k. Legend!

Stone Roses seem a good fit for Glastonbury, and haven't headlined before. They are already down for T in the Park, but not sure that stops them. If they don't play this year, not sure they'll still be around next year. The Glastonbury and Stone Roses combination would be epic.

I watched about 5 songs, it sounded like I had heard Highway to hell 5 times, so we cleared off to the 4th stage to watch another band.
They arent the highest paid ever apprently either, German Industrial Metal heroes Rammstein got paid more than that a few years ago, but then when you see their stage show, you can understand why!

PS - AC/DC is a stunning bet at 66/1, imo.
As already said AC/Dc got 2 Million flat fee but provided there own stage and rigging for Download four/five years ago - they literally set up there own stage beside the main stage.
AC/DC rent a venue i.e Wembley (flat fee) and take everything made on the day £89 a ticket last summer £100 in 2016 - they will also get the complete bar take etc. Someone like AC/DC have huge overheads, with a retained crew and complete set following them around the world. There current stage is a crashed train, an actual train - assume Amazon Prime don't ship that for free.
Funny you would pick Squeeze and Jools - both are in the upper echelons of ticket prices for mid card venues. Both charge circa £40 for a 90 minute show in a venue of 1000 ish people. Usually 75% of that will go to the band, 12.5 to local promoter and 12.5% to venue - split the bar take and band does own merch. Jools is a touring Money making machine.
Basically the bigger name you are the better deal you can negotiate - Rock city in Nottingham usually offers a smaller fee for a bigger percentage of bar take for example, similar deals in Glasgow (King tuts) and many other venues. Some bands will use a local promoter take a flat fee and the promoter sorts everything else with a venue - less hassle for the band, smaller income.
Public Enemy recently played a gig in Lowestoft, did it for airfare as one of the band wanted to come and see his relation in London - 500 people turned up at 25 quid a ticket.
As for costs a mid tare festival non headline slot can be as little as 5k (many bands play Glasto for 15 tickets or less) - think the biggest fee I know to have been paid was Eminem at Reading about 10 years ago and he was rumoured to get £3 million and was promptly booed by sections of the crowd. Glasto have reportedly paid a million once to Radiohead who promptly gave it to charity (hence how the figure is known). Nirvana are rumoured to have played Reading for £100k 20 years ago.
I think there is an honour thing with Glasto and the headline acts see a huge upturn in album/download sales - but they do tend to miss out, Dave Matthews Band, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springstein, Libertines and many more have all passed Glasto for a bigger payday elsewhere over the years. Some eventually play Glasto, some don't.

Great insight there mate, thanks!!
I can remember speaking to American band Story of the Year a few....years ago. They said that they wouldnt play Download festival if they werent already on tour over here, as they would make that big a loss on it to ship all their stuff over from the US.
All the money is concentrated at the top end, Download DO get to rely on the fact that Donnington is an iconic venue for rock in this country, and bands want to play here for the prestige of it.

Wonderful stuff, thanks Proper Norfolk Bloke.
I'm especially interested in Jools & Squeeze, because they seem to do it almost full time, maybe 40 weeks per year. Been doing oit a long time, too, non-stop for Jools, less so for Squeeze in it's numerous incarnations.
They must be loaded. Don't begrudge them a penny though. They enrich our lives.
Amazing the things we discuss on a betting thread. Fred wobbled a bit recently, but we might yet survive a while longer.
