The shortlist for this year's Mercury Prize is out today.  Here's the Telegraph write up on each of the 12 nominated albums:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/news/mercury-prize-2016-shortlist-revealed-everything-you-need-to-kno/

The public now vote to select the first of the 6 finalists from which a winner will be selected on 15th September.  So, six of these are effectively going to be non-runners from a betting perspective.   I reckon the David Bowie album is 1.01 to be the fan's vote and, in my opinion, is the only album of the 12 on the shortlist that's pretty much "guaranteed" a place in the final six.  There would be uproar if it didn't make the final.

The judges for the Mercury Prize are notoriously contrary & controversial and they've picked some leftfield winners in the past but I cannot envisage any scenario where Bowie's Blackstar album isn't this year's winner.  Crucially, Blackstar was critically acclaimed in pretty much every review in the three or four days between the release and his death.  Since his death it has been generally accepted in the "industry" as a masterpiece.   The judges have been given a free pass to declare it as the winner on merit without being accused of a nostalgic sympathy vote.  I think they will.

I can't believe that it's generally available at 2/1 but Choral's are out of line at 5/2 so I've helped myself to some of that this morning.

EDIT:  Here's another review of the nominees by the excellent BYTHEMIN team. http://www.bytheminute.co/events/2734-music-mercury-prize-2016-we-cast-our-eye-over-the-nominations-for-the-2016-award-here-live-04-aug-2016

BYTHEMIN was setup by Lawrence Donegan who is a respected golf journalist who also wrote the excellent Four Iron in The Soul which is the story of his year caddying for journeyman Ross Drummond on the European Tour.  It's a great read, highly recommended by me.  Lawrence is a nice bloke and a very interesting character.  He played bass in Lloyd Cole's Commotions before becoming a journo.

Anyway, I digress ....

Thoughts on Blackstar please?

Cricket's T20 Cup Quarters are next week, starting monday

Notts v Essex
Northants v Mddlesex
Gloucs v Durham
Glamorgan v Yorks

winners go through to finals day in a few weeks time

There is a real opportunity here because the outright betting market has a big bias against the smaller teams

http://www.oddschecker.com/cricket/natwest-t20-blast/winner

Glamorgan have the best net run rate in the whole competition, the least number of runs conceded, a 4-2 record at home. Finished second in their group with a bigger points total than five of their other quarter final sides (the top four in each of the two groups progressed).

One of the most impressive sides in this competition this season they are chalked up as 9-1 fifth favourites with a home quarter to come

Glamorgan has few star players. Shaun Tait, the Aussie quick is the overseas.  Colin Ingram, the former South African is one of the best big hitters in the county game, fifth on the runscorer lists in T20 this season. With the ball, van der Gugten and Michael Hogan are 6th and 9th in the competition this season on wickets taken.

Glamorgan play fashionable and successful Yorkshire at home in the quarter-finals next week. Yorkshire are 1.68 to win their quarter final. They are too short for this game.

We've backed Northamptonshire on here for about 4 years off and on. Another hopelessly unfashionable small (and completely skint ) county. I stopped backing them when they lost David Willey to Yorkshire in the off-season but this was hopelessly premature. While they don't have the resources to compete in the 4 day game they remain a really good one day side, through to the quarters in both this and the one day cup

They finished second in their group and have a fine home record yet its evens each of two for the Middlesex game. We can get them at 15/2 outright

Possibly the most rotund county team they are stuffed with big hitters and canny one day bowlers. In Ben Duckett, who was mentioned on here two years ago, they have THE emerging young county player. going to be exceptionally good.

Northants won it in 2013, were runners up last year.

suggest £20 e/w (1/2 1,2) Northants 15/2 Betfred and Glamorgan 9/1 William Hill

hopefully get both through to finals day and a nice sweat

If you crossed out the names Northants and Glamorgan and put Surrey and Lancashire next to these squads and records this season they'd be 7/2 favourites in the betting alongside Notts

Afternoon Tighty.

Tonights rugby league sees Warrington host St Helens. Warringtons attack has been outstanding for most of the season, using really quick ball down the middle with a number of runners. It is very difficult to stop once they get going and I think it gives us some betting value outside of the wingers. If we can get on with paddy p can we have £10 on both D Clark and Sandow to score at anytime, they are both 3 to 1 there. If paddy is a no goer then just do Clark @ 5-2 with ladbrokes.

No worries Tighty, I figured it was more of a recommendation to others than Fred because of exactly that.

I'm ashamed to admit that me and a few of my wives were able to get our tenners on ok with Chorals who are now 7/4 from 5/2. PP opened up at 13/8 which is probably about right.  The bald guy's just opened up at 5/2 but even I won't be able to get on with him.  Good luck to anyone that can snap it up because it won't last.

who are these guys, i hear you cry?

"English defender Curtis Davies took to Instagram to share a photo of himself, Andy Robertson, Robert Snodgrass, Sam Clucas, David Meyler, Jake Livermore, Adama Diomande, Ahmed Elmohamady and Tom Huddlestone posing in front of the stunning natural backdrop.

'Hull City squad photo 2016/17,' he captioned the image of the nine players alongside 'laughing' emoticons, clearly making fun of the club's desperate lack of squad depth.

Hampered by injury problems and yet to spend a penny in the window, they are struggling to field a senior XI at present"

Bad news for Ryan Moore means good news for those on SDS for the title.

Touching on from Chelsea at 13/2 for the title yesterday, if we expect them to have a good season (sadly I do), then Costa should be in amongst the goals. As little as 12s with some firms but choral have him at 20/1. Looks like the rumours of a departure have subsided along with his injury troubles too.

Despite him being a twat, a fit and hungry Costa in a strong Chelsea team will bag goals.....when he isn't suspended Wink

fwiw the double of Chelsea/Costa is 66/1 with bald. Eurgh, feel I need a shower now.
