On a lighter note there was a comedy night on the referendum in Glasgow, and it was shown on TV over the weekend, well worth a watch:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04h8kvx/kevin-bridges-live-at-the-referendum

The reception for the English comedians was good despite the scare stories. Jack Dee in particular when he had a good go at Scotland.

I was at the pre-run of this in the Stand, it was cracking.  We got to see Jack Dee, Kevin Bridges, Hal Crutenden and Simon Evans all for a £10.  Generally I have found the visitors to the stand to be morelefty and vocal yes supporters at this gig it was about 60/40 in favour of no.   There were some cracking jokes left out the BBC show.

Andrew Neil @afneil  ·  13h
Strong indications from Murdoch and Salmond sources that Scottish Sun will back independence, despite protestations of London Sun Editor.

If this does happen then Yes could just nick it, if it doesnt they may just fail

I think this is posturing by Murdoch.  FML if he does though. The sun effect is huge unfortunately.

The betting over night on betfair wouldn't suggest this.  No has hardened overnight back to 4/11 from 1/2 at the start of the weekend.  Ladbrokes are 2/1 45-50% the yes vote which looks by far and away the most likely outcome for it to be close but not quite close enough for yes to win.  Given the polls it would seem very hard for yes to get less than 45% of the vote.

Probably just better if Yes wins this time and they crack on with it. If not I can see future referendums down the at which Yes will win at some point anyway. It's probably better if they go their own way now so it's all done and dusted.

If No wins, are we looking at regular referenda from this point on? on some sort of electorial cycle?

or is it a "one and done"?

surely the latter makes more sense in terms of cost, disruption etc?

I like that price although I think there is a chance a higher % of yes voters will not turn up.  I think yes are converting undecided members more than no's KMAC will disagree but I am yet to meet one. The undecideds are likely less engaged and will fill higher % of the no shows. Also nos are going to be more inclined to vote now as it is not a foregone conclusion, the yes voters were always going to be that committed. The hardening of the odds is to do with the Osborne announcement. If the sun backs it you will get an opposite swing.

If they just rinse repeat then surely sooner or later yes will win just by variance.  Has to be a one and done job surely in any given generation.  20/30 years min before it's ever done again surely?  Maybe wait for North Sea Oil to run out then do it again! Grin  See how keen they are to offski when their crown jewels disappear!

I hasten to note the source is the guardian but seems about right:

Will there ever be another referendum?

The nationalists say that this is a once-in-a-generation vote. But should the poll be close and the UK choose to leave the EU in a 2017 referendum, it is highly likely that the SNP will want to revisit the question. That said, the SNP would need to be returned to government in 2016 and with a manifesto that supports a second referendum. The public may well be tired of the issue but the Better Together campaign believe they need to keep the yes vote to 40%, and preferably lower, to finish the debate off.

Assume it would be up to the remaining UK to have a vote to see if we want them to re enter.  Imagine how funny that would be?
