WSOP National Championship
Day 2 completed
Hwang Leads the Way Into Wednesday's National Championship Final Table
On Saturday, Day 2 of the WSOP National Championship saw the remaining 39 players of a 157-entrant field return to battle down to a final table. The lineup was an eclectic mix of qualifiers from the WSOP POY and WSOPC Leaderboards, and by the end of the night, three from the former and five from the latter made up the final table with Yung Hwang and his stack of 1.224 million leading the way.
The day started off with 21 players leaving empty handed as only 18 were slated to get paid. Among the players to his the rail early were Chris Moorman, Nicolas Fierro, Joseph Cheong, Aaron Massey and Gene Dudek. They were soon joined by two other players after they became victims of Hwang’s early heater.
It happened when Josh Tieman moved all in from early position for 39,500 and cleared the field to Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier on the button. The Frenchman opted for a three-bet to 66,000, the small blind got out of the way, and Hwang moved all in from the big for 184,500. Grospellier, who had 180,500, splashed in a call and the cards were turned up:
Showdown
Grospellier {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Hwang {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Tieman {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
The board ran out a clean {8-Spades}{3-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} and Hwang scored the double elimination and vaulted toward the top of the chip counts.
From there, more eliminations occurred including that of Fabrice Soulier, Paul Sokoloff, Chris Tryba, Jerry Monroe, Jamie Kerstetter, Stephen Kats and Jacob Naquin, just to name a few. With 19 players remaining, the money bubble last nearly three hours before bursting. It final happened when Matt Keikoan raised to 18,000 from the hijack and Mitch Schock moved all in from the big blind for 34,000 total. Keikoan made the call with{Q-Spades}{6-Spades}, which was behind the{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} of Schock. Unfortunately for the latter, the board ran out {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and the bubble was burst, guaranteeing the remaining 18 players a $22,278 payday.
Once the money was reached, the action picked up and the eliminations resumed. Below is a list of those who fell short of the final table. Check out their elimination hands simply by clicking on their name.

9th Justin Gardenhire $39,030

Day 1b Concludes; Hoang Leads; Selbst and Negreanu Close Behind
Vanessa Selbst Among The Leaders
Day 1b of the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event has officially come to a close. Today saw 2,114 players put up $10,000 to compete for the most prestigious title in poker. Combined with the players who came out for Day 1a, the total number of entrants for the Main Event so far is up to 3,180. Leading the remaining players of Day 1b is John Hoang who is sitting atop a stack of 180,000. Rounding out the top three are James Schafer (171,250) and Vanessa Selbst (168,350).
This is the day of the year that all tournament poker players wait for, so it was no surprise to see a stacked field that was filled to the brim with familiar faces. That being said, this also turns out to be the saddest day of the year for some, as their hopes of making a deep run in the Main Event have to be pushed back one more year. Among those to turn up for play only to have their WSOP come to an end before the day's conclusion were Tom Dwan, David Singer, Tyler Bonkowski, Martin Kabrhel, Chris DeMaci, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Chip Jett, Victor Ramdin, Joe Sebok, Todd Brunson, Amanda Musumeci, Bertrand Grospellier, 2004 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Raymer, and current UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
While the series came to an end for many, others thrived in this deep structured tournament. One of the more familiar faces looking to make a deep run in this tournament is four-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu. Despite his recent cash in Event 60: $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball (No-Limit), Negreanu has had a rough series thus far. He's managed to collect 140,575 chips so far on Day 1, however, and has a solid chance at finishing the series on a strong note as he is sitting top ten in chips to finish Day 1b.
This summer has come to be known as the year of the woman here at the WSOP. Many female players made final tables in open events and Vanessa Selbst was able to capture her second bracelet. Selbst continued to crush the dreams of other players on Day 1b of the Main Event. The biggest addition to Selbst's stack came on the final hand of the evening when she got it all in with another big stack. All of the money went in before the flop and Selbst held against her opponent's . Selbst turned a set of aces and her opponent rivered a king just to rub it in. After that win Selbst was able to end the night with 168,350.
Up until Selbst's final hand of the night it was Maria Ho who held the position of woman with the most chips for a majority of the day . Ho gained a solid chunk of her chips when she was able to river a full house to double up. Ho finished the day with 130,425 and will be a force to be reckoned with when she returns for Day 2.
Other familiar names who will be returning for Day 2 include Jason Somerville (144,725), Shaun Deeb (125,900), Brian Hastings (119,000), Sam Farha (118,500), Amnon Filippi (109,900), Bernard Lee (96,575), Eugene Katchalov (96,275), George Danzer (84,125), Dan Harrington (83,750), Robert Varkonyi (75,325), Jerry Yang (71,775), Barry Greenstein (60,825), Justin Bonomo (54,225), Liv Boeree (40,500), Bryan Devonshire (22,525) and many more.
With five levels under their belts, the surviving players will return to play for Day 2 at 12:00 PM on Tuesday

Haddox Leads Day 1c; Blom, Brunson & Ivey Move on to Day 2
On Saturday, Day 1a of the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event drew 1,066 players. The following day, 2,114 turned up for Day 1b. On Monday, that combined total was passed as 3,418 players packed the Rio for Day 1c action, the largest one-day Main Event field in its 43-year history.
The final number of 6,598 entrants created a prize pool of $62,021,200, with $8,527,982 of that reserved for first place.
The man best positioned to capture that prize from the Day 1c field is Randy Haddox, who bagged up 188,275 and finished the night as chip leader. He joins William John (266,700) and John Hoang (180,000), who played Day 1a and 1b respectively, as the starting-flight chip leaders.
Some other players who survived Day 1c in decent shape are Doyle Brunson (81,400), who almost didn’t play this year’s Main Event; former Main Event champs Joe Cada (117,375), Jamie Gold (24,800), Johnny Chan (82,300), Tom McEvoy (24,125); 2006 WSOP Player of the Year Jeff Madsen (33,525); the current 2012 WSOP POY frontrunner Phil Ivey (11,525); and Big One for One Drop winner Antonio Esfandiari (78,925).
Another man who will be returning on Day 2 with a decent stack is Viktor “Isildur1” Blom (110,225), who is playing his first WSOP Main Event. In one of his more notable hands, an early position raiser made it 700, a middle-position player limped, and the player in the cutoff three-bet to 2,600. Blom then four-bet to 5,800 from the big blind, the other two players got out of the way, and the cutoff five-bet to 12,000. Blom shuffled his chips before moving in 18,400 for a six-bet. The Swede’s opponent moved all in and Blom let out a sigh and called.
Showdown
Blom {A-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Opponent {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Blom was in bad shape, but he got lucky as the board ran out {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{7-Spades} and he doubled to 90,000 in chips.
Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky as Blom. Day 1c saw plenty of big names come and go including David “Bakes” Baker, Fatima Moreira De Melo, Olivier Busquet, Max Martinez, Jimmy Fricke, Thor Hansen, Brendon Rubie, Justin “Boosted J” Smith, David Bach, Chino Rheem, Jonathan Little, Nacho Barbero, Andrew Robl, Lex Veldhuis, Matt Waxman, Humberto Brenes, Vincent van der Fluit and Jonathan Duhamel, just to name a few.
Likewise, the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champ, Chris Moneymaker, hit the rail on Day 1c in Level 4 when he raised to 1,500 from under the gun and cleared the field all the way to Marty Zabib, who made the call from the small blind. Hank Farrell then three-bet to around 6,800 from the big blind, Moneymaker called off for the same amount, and Zabib came along for the ride.
The two active players proceeded to check it down as the board ran out {7-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Zabib rolled over {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for trips. Farrell simply mucked while Moneymaker showed {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} before taking his exit from the 2012 WSOP Main Event.
The surviving players from Day 1c will return at Noon PST on Wednesday for Day 2; meanwhile, on Tuesday, July 10, the survivors from Days 1a and 1b will return at Noon PST to play their respective Day
in separate rooms.
