sprinters today?

Griepel? Sagan? Kittel?

No bet day for me. Can't see past Kittel. Demare likes the finish, I'm expecting FDJ to put a big effort for this one, but I've not got involved.

Kittel looks sooo comfortable in the sprints without Cav there, can see him winning every one he contests atm

Yeah, Cav is a massive loss to the race. Maybe Greipel can get back on track, although the Lotto tactics need a rethink.

What do you think is wrong with Greipel?

I know he was hampered by the Cav fall in the first stage, but in both of them he has looked way off the pace quite a long way out. Seemed to be struggling to even stay with his train today

Today it looked like he lost out in positioning in the last 500m & sat up.

A sprint stage. Kittel is looking unbeatable at the minute. Maybe the French sprinters, Demare & Coquard be better on home soil.

Whatever many of the riders will be nervous for tomorrows stage.

Did all the Teams, & the accompanying huge cavalcade of cars, vans & whatever, get across the Channel in time?

Last I heard, Eurotunnel & Eurostar were having serious delays due to catenary failure.

Riders all flew in a chartered jet. Teams & equipment all went on the Tours own ferry.

Many of the journos are stuck on Eurostar.

During the Tour a friendly battle goes on between the Team chefs.

5 star cooking from Hannah @dailystews at Tinkoff, & @teamskychef Soren. They tweet photos of each days menu.

Some ponderings on stage 5:

Last time the Tour had a cobbled stage was in 2010. Hushovd (a Roubaix specialist) won in a small group including Thomas & Cancellara.

2004 also won by a cobbled specialist O'Grady in a small group.

This years edition looks tougher.

Should be noted that at 155km it's nearly half the distance of a traditional Paris-Roubaix. Legs will be fresher, younger, less experienced riders could still be involved in the final. The shorter distance also brings more chaos. The fight for the front of the peloton before each sector is likely to be manic & more dangerous than the cobbled sections themselves. Punctures & crashes are pretty much guaranteed.

more later...
