Why would Labour ruin their electoral chances by getting involved in Brexit?

I initially wrote ignore the next election. But they won't do that.

The missing element from Tory post-mortem: the damage that even a successful Brexit does to their re-election hopes:

Remarkably, the Cabinet haven't yet properly discussed the really big Brexit question: what should the final deal be

One thing that isn't getting much attention is the position the EU have to be seen to take.

Politically they need to look very tough with the UK. Negotiations cant be seen to be going too well - they don't want any momentum to gather in any other member country that could de-rail the EU project.

It seems logical they will do a deal - but will make the UK sweat and play hard ball right up until the wire.

I think you are missing one major consideration.  A leaving agreement only needs a majority of the 27 to agree, but a trade deal has to be unanimous.  For this reason the UK's attempt to coalesce the two can never work.

I guess the real power in the EU will flex its muscle. Merkel will want some sort of trade deal and will lean on the weaker members.

She is pragmatic enough to know its in her own countries trading interest to do a deal.
