Cool thing happened today.
When i had the restaurant I was very much in the belief that people should be private about what they earn etc. Then one day I was thinking it might be a fun experiment to see what would happen if everyone in the building knew exactly how much each other got paid
What I did was lay everyones payslips out on my desk and told everyone I had to go uot but all payslips were on my desk. Obviously next 2 weeks are full of moaning "why am I getting paid £7.85 when John gets £8" etc was entirely negative...
All except one guy, young lad who worked in the kitchen who I'd always thought was a nice hardworking lad. He came to my office and said to me "David - I know John is earning £9 an hour and I'm only on £7.75 - what do I have to do to earn £9 an hour as well?"
I thought the attitude was so good i snap put him on £8.50 and told him that truthfully he wasn't as skilled as John (who'd been there 7 years) but that he certainly could be given a little more experience. Then 2 days later someone came to my office saying that it ws unfair this guy was getting £8.50 and he wasn't. I said to him - did he tell you about the conversation he had with me? He said yes he did. I told him if if he can come to me in the next 3 days and tell me why i put him to £8.50, then he can have £8.50 too. The guy never came back to me and actually quit a few weeks later!
So today i got an email from the guy who i gave the payrise too, he is now working a really good job at a sale company and he just employed that guy who came to me after!!! Look at me, shaping lives
I dont think using peoples livlihoods for the sake of my own experimental entertainment is actually something we should really be doing though.
