Who's he really working for?

How Donald Trump is monetising his presidency

Six months in, Mr Trump’s conflicts of interest look even worse

simply amazing stuff

"Anthony Scaramucci Called Me to Unload About White House Leakers, Reince Priebus, and Steve Bannon. He started by threatening to fire the entire White House communications staff. It escalated from there."

Obamacare

· Survived by one vote in the Senate in 2010
· Survived by one vote in SCOTUS in 2012
· Survived by one vote in the Senate in 2017

John M will be able to confirm this but i think the SCOTUS vote was 6-3 because they specifically did not want a 5-4 vote so one SC member was persuaded to switch vote to make it more "convincing"

I'm a bit confused.

What did McCain vote for a couple of days ago that caused such a furore?

I thought that was the binning of Obamacare. Obviously not!

I think the first vote was to start a debate on changes.  This vote was about a change.

It's not surprising people are confused. The press messed up badly on the McCain healthcare vote. They are so used to political double-speak that they couldn't accept that someone would believe in the process enough to vote that there should be a debate on something he disagreed with, and then vote against the proposal. They all assumed that his vote to allow the debate to proceed was a vote for the proposal, which would lead to him voting for the Bill when the substantive vote came, despite him making a speech strongly opposing it.

The liberal and mainstream press is continually being wrongly accused of producing "fake news", but that is exactly what this onslaught was. A lot of apologies are due.

Did McCain change his mind or was it always his intention to vote against after allowing the debate?

If he had just been a no show for the first vote, it would have been 49-50 against the debate taking place, right?

I assume people just misread his intentions.

A lot of people should have red faces this morning.  Dare say a few tweets will be hastily removed on both sides.

The motion to debate the Bil would have failed if he didn't show, and some were just angry that he didn't take the opportunity to kill it. But he clearly doesn't work like that and wanted to allow the debate. It wasn't like he gave some non-committal message that left the door open for him to support the proposal - he made it totally clear in his speech on the day of the first vote that he was against it.

"I voted for the motion to proceed to allow debate to continue and amendments to be offered. I will not vote for the bill as it is today. It's a shell of a bill right now. We all know that. I have changes urged by my state's governor that will have to be included to earn my support for final passage of any bill. I know many of you will have to see the bill changed substantially for you to support it.

"We've tried to do this by coming up with a proposal behind closed doors in consultation with the administration, then springing it on skeptical members, trying to convince them it's better than nothing, asking us to swallow our doubts and force it past a unified opposition. I don't think that is going to work in the end. And it probably shouldn't.

"The Obama administration and congressional Democrats shouldn't have forced through Congress without any opposition support a social and economic change as massive as Obamacare. And we shouldn't do the same with ours."
