Trump's briefing for his call with Putin included the instruction "DO NOT CONGRATULATE".

It also said he should condemn the poisoning of the Russian spy.

He ignored both of them.

Super post, MintTrav. Very interesting, and quite astounding to read.

Beers on me this summer, if you happen to drop in to the Nugget.

Agreed, fabulous post by The Mint.

Down South, they usually weigh the Republican votes rather than counting them, but this year things could be different. Those States have been affected by Trump's many controversies and several safe Republican seats could be in play in this year's mid-terms.

One such seat is that of our old friend Ted Cruz, whose Senate seat comes up this year. On Tuesday night, Beto O'Rourke won the Texas Democrat Primary (where the turnout was double that of Democrat votes in 2016) and became the only obstruction to Ted's re-election.

On Wednesday, the Cruz campaign released this radio advert:

Pretty catchy, yeah? Gotta like how they rhyme 'Texuns' with 'guns'.

"If you're gonna run in Texts, you can't be a Liberal man" is fair political comment, and probably true. But what about "Liberal Robert wanted to fit in, so he changed his name to Beto and hid it with a grin"? Ted has been questioned about the ad and has said they're just having a laugh, you need to have a sense of humour, and so on, which is about as disingenuous as you can get. There is a lot more to it than that. The ad clearly has racial undertones, suggesting that O'Rourke changed his name to appeal to the State's large Latin American population. O'Rourke's real name is Robert, but he says that Beto is a common nickname for Robert in El Paso and has released a young photo of himself to prove it (he's the one on the right).

If he still has trouble with his laces he could follow Ted's lead of wearing Texan cowboy boots.

What makes this episode bizarre is that Cruz did exactly what he is accusing O'Rourke of, in the opposite direction. Ted's father is Cuban, and Ted's real name is Rafael Edward Cruz. He was known as Rafael until his early twenties, when he changed to Ted in an apparent attempt to appeal better to the majority white population in his political career. The bare-faced hypocrisy is mind-blowing. I don't think you could get away with it in this country but he will in Texas.

No doubt there is more to come on this, but I hope Cruz keeps his seat. He has so much more still to give us.

Madness!

I remember that video of him and his mother, where she looks at him likes he's a lunatic when he says that she prays for hours every day Cheesy

Ted got pranked on Friday by a girl who opened her jacket just as the photo was being taken.

I don't really approve of this, but it's Ted, so I'll go with it.

Shulkin’s gone!

Veteran Affairs Secretary David Shulkin has been fired by Twitter tonight. That’s not so much of a surprise, though I thought Trump might go for a Big Bang reshuffle rather than this drip-drip of sackings.

The big surprise is the replacement - Admiral Ronny Jackson. Does the name sound familiar? Ronny was the doctor who gave Trump a clean bill of health recently.

Veteran Affairs is, by far, the largest government agency, employing almost double the next-largest (Homeland Security). It employs more people than the US Army, Navy or Air-Force (they outweigh it when added together). And Donald has appointed the White House doctor, who seems to have hardly any management experience, to head it up. Sometimes Trump does some sensible things and I wonder if we are being a bit unfair on him. And then he does stuff like this.

Hope he's a better Doctor, than he is a public speaker.

"While we are on the subject, it is reported that the U.S. Post Office will lose $1.50 on average for each package it delivers for Amazon. That amounts to Billions of Dollars. The Failing N.Y. Times reports that “the size of the company’s lobbying staff has ballooned,” and that... ...does not include the Fake Washington Post, which is used as a “lobbyist” and should so  REGISTER. If the P.O. “increased its parcel rates, Amazon’s shipping costs would rise by $2.6 Billion.” This Post Office scam must stop. Amazon must pay real costs (and taxes) now!" Trump on twitter

For a man who said not paying taxes makes him smart he's really off base here. Should Amazon demand higher prices? Why would you blame Amazon and not the Post Office or whichever idiot accepted this sort of deal?

"Sandbulte’s claim is based on how the Postal Service sets its prices. USPS is not allowed to set prices so low that it loses money on delivering packages. (If it could, it could undercut competitors like FedEx or UPS.) But the formula for how it sets its prices was created by Congress in 2006, and doesn’t account for the fact that packages are a much bigger share of the USPS’s business than they used to be.

Sandbulte drew his conclusions based on a Citigroup analysis that suggested the average USPS parcel should cost about $1.46 more per package across the board than it does right now. (Sandbulte works for a firm that owns FedEx stock.)"

Not read anything yet, but just flashed up on my phone.

The Donald has warned Russia, Iran, and Assad 'There will be a big price to pay'.
