Sad news about Doyle Brunson.

His life story was remarkable, including surviving cancer as a young man, and his position as a legend of the poker world was beyond dispute.  I still remember the slight thrill of seeing him on his buggy in Vegas a few years ago.

Met him at DTD, it must have been around 2008. Smart shirt open at the collar, huge stetson, craggy face, easy smile, slow Texan drawl...

A legend in every sense.

RIP Mr Brunson.

Andy Rourke bassist of The Smiths has died at 59 of pancreatic cancer.

So many tributes paid by musicians from every corner of the rock world on Friday morning (May 19) as fellow musicians honoured the musician, it goes without saying just how good he was.

Johnny Marr said of him it was on those Smiths records that Andy reinvented what it is to be a bass guitar player,” he said.” I was present at every one of Andy’s bass takes on every Smiths session. Sometimes I was there as the producer and sometimes just as his proud mate and cheerleader. Watching him play those dazzling baselines was an absolute privilege and genuinely something to behold. But one time which always comes to mind was when I sat next to him at the mixing desk watching him play his bass on the song The Queen Is Dead. It was so impressive that I said to myself ‘I’ll never forget this moment.’”

Tina Turner.

I saw Ike and Tina Turner live at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1971 - she was a force of nature.

RIP

I have a bit of a dislike of Primal Scream for some time due to them taking too much credit for the work of Andy Weatherall.  Some of the stuff that cam out after the death of Denise Johnson didn't make feel more favorable towards them, but this witness statement at the inquest of Martin Duffy lays it all bare.  Warning: It is upsetting.

That is pretty brutal reading.

I’ve always prided myself on being a pretty good judge of character and I pegged Bobby Gillespie as an arsehole from the first time I saw him

Not a celeb but I know there were a few blondes who came to my wedding back in 2011 as part of the APAT tour and had the pleasure of meeting my Mum, who even got involved in the wedding night poker comp at the Tropicana despite never having even watched a hand of poker before.

Sadly I lost her last week to cancer after a 4 year battle. RIP Mum. Cry
