Prince Rogers Nelson was the sound of my teenage years. Saw him in '85 and was blown away. An absolute genius.

3:25 onwards

Saw him live in 1988 still one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Purple Rain was the first CD I ever bought. RIP the great Prince.

More celebrities are dying because there are more celebrities.

Someone should organise a competition on here of 'Guess the next celebrity to die'.

There are more 'lolceleb's' for sure in 2016 however most of them we won't be discussing them when they die.  Kerry Katona and her like will not discussed when they die.  They are the bulk of celeb's in the modern world.  They are not celebs just chancers.

I guarantee you are wrong.

David Gest seemed like a nice guy and I'm sad for his friends and family he has died.

But really was it worth front page news?

If DG got the front page treatment when he passed on, Kerry Katona is a nailed on certainty to receive the same.

The press (so I assume they've done their homework and know what their readers enjoy reading about) and the majority of the general public have a mawkish fascination with celebrities dying.

But it means when a true global superstar (like Bowie or Prince) dies, there's nowhere they can go further to recognise that someone of real importance has left us.

Would you back yourself to out live Kerry?  Think i would even though i have an incredibly unhealthy lifestyle and she got nearly 10 years on me.  Pretty sure we will see the evidence when she dies with our own eyes.  It would be a really sad situation if chancers like her got the proper talented celeb treatment when they die.  Says a lot about how celeb culture has changed in the past 15 years since BB started.

How you bet her over/under age at death?  She must be one of the oldest mid 30s body/health/mental health wise in the celeb world surely?  Add on numerous hubbies/kids with different fathers alcohol/smoking and drugs (i assume) and comical lol bankrupt cases even though she still lives in a mansion and constantly on holiday she can't be likely to see 65 surely?  Trash of the highest order.

FFS, you don't live in the real world arb if you think she looks rough.

If you came and stayed in Darlington for the weekend you will see plenty of people in infitely worse shape than her who are 10 years younger.

All paid by labour benefits to breed over the last 20 years and create more of the same! ;D  Good for the country according to blair!

I did say one of the oldest looking mid 30s in the celeb world not the ultra left wing world of spoons/yates/darlo nightclubs just to correct your statement!

To be fair, Kerry Katona was famous long before people were famous for doing a couple scenes in the Sugar Hut on a Friday night, and was part of what was a fairly successful pop group in the 90s/00s.

No Bowie, obviously. Still, she is certainly more of a celeb than the people you're talking about, and regarding those, I make you 100% right.

You're long odds against, Keith. She has to be nailed on to have a relapse, and go mental on the bugle, unfortunately for her family.

She wasn't in said pop group for long though once she snared a boyzone/westlife???  (think westlife - showing my age here haha) himbo (albeit the fat one).  She knew easier money lay elsewhere from a very early age than actually using her sparse talents.

You are right though Marky she is way more talented than most of the 2016 lolcelebs which is quite worrying what her and Jordan have built in the last 15 years celeb wise.

She's got 15 years on me and about 15 stone too.

I'd definitely back myself to pop my clogs first at 4/6. There has to be some hope she finds hapiness and contentment. Then she'd be 1/33 to outlast me.

You forgetting she is female as well and that probably adds another 5 years on average.  You know she is 35 Keith?

Most wagons won't have a clue what the clay reference is!!!  They will think Kerry is a good potter because she is from Warrington (semi close to the Potteries).  If she was a tennis pro surely she would be a clay court dirt ball baseliner given her build?  Cant imagine her being too effective on the grass.

Yeah, Brian McFadden was the one she married :D

He was on 'Sunday Brunch' a few weeks back, with one of the Boyzone lads, and they're doing some form of tour.

Had to get Wiki on the go for a mooch about, and she was there for 4/7 years. Then they reformed in 2012, for some TV show, and it went well, so ended up doing some tours.

Always goes well when you got your 3rd bankruptcy case to deal with at 35!  Brian must wake up most days and think 'how am i the only multi millionaire boy band member in history who actually dated the ugliest bird of his life whilst i was bang in my prime and somehow i married her and had 2 kids with her as well?'  He will date fitter birds when he is 65 and potless than he choose to marry in his prime!  He can't even say she was classy/educated/good mother/wife material.  He literally has no excuses in the world for his choice.

The man who started the beat, the first to record Jamaican Rasta's.  A legend among men.  His touch and sound will be heard for centuries.

The Great Man himself passed away yesterday, aged 87.

So famous they named an Airport after him, he had his own Army, & we don't need to even name him, as he is instantly recognizable.

Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated

He changed golf forever, & was a good man.

Absolutely shattering news.

Just saw that Jack Bodell popped off this week.

Also Janet Reno.

You have to be a certain age to remember Bodell, but he beat Bugner and a few other big names. Also remembered for cutting off his toes with a lawn-mower. Don't expect many will remember Reno.

Leonard Cohen was a genius songwriter and great performer. I was lucky enough to see him at the Big Chill a few years ago. In fact both my kids can say they saw him although given my son was probably only about 2 at the time he may not remember too well.

I was watching with a friend who said he did not really know much his material, I just said wait you will recognise loads. As virtually each song started he went oh he wrote that one did he.

Aside from his albums there was a great tribute album years ago called I'm your Fan. It has cover versions by the likes of REM, House of Love etc just showcases how good his songs were.

I like this quote from his record company. He had just penned Hallelujah and they didn't quite get it.

"Look Mr Cohen, we know you're great, we just don't know if you're any good".

I bet they are glad they released it now!

Some of his lyrics are just brilliant

Tower of Song

Well my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
Oh in the Tower of Song
I said to Hank Williams: how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
A hundred floors above me
In the Tower of Song

I Can't Forget

I stumbled out of bed
I got ready for the struggle
I smoked a cigarette
And I tightened up my gut
I said this can't be me
Must be my double
And I can't forget, I can't forget
I can't forget but I don't remember what

And finally for all of us punching above our weight when it comes to our partners

Chelsea Hotel No 2

You told me again, you preferred handsome men.
But for me you would make an exception

That "I'm Your Fan" record was a play on words re. his hugely successful 1988 comeback (after a spell in limbo) LP "I'm Your Man".

I've loved Leonard Cohen since I first listened to his totally different to anybody else style in the 1960's although many called his work "music to commit suicide to".

I always considered him to be slightly more of a poet than a songwriter.

RIP

A A Gill has died after a short battle with, to use his description, "a full English of cancers".

As gifted a linguist as Will Self, as insightful an analyst as Gary Neville and as unapoligetically honest as Aunt Ada's flatulence during Christmas dinner.

I have only come to appreciate his work over the last few years. He wasn't a panel show regular or a political heavyweight. No novelist or poet. Not even a presenter or pundit. He was a truly brilliant writer.

We are genuinely blessed that he has allowed us to keep his work.

If it hadn't have been for George  , i wouldn't have got laid nearly half as often as i did.

Terrific songwriter.

Because you looked a bit like him at the height of his fame? Because you used his songs to woo the ladies? Because you worked at the Clicky Clicks he crashed into?

I'm intrigued how he doubled your nooky tally :)

Going from 1 to 2 could simply be variance!!  No idea how big the sample size is and how significant a part GM actually played in it!

Ha

Met my future ex wife at a disco in the early 80s , had our first kiss whilst dancing to Careless Whisper.

In later years one of the barmaids at a pub where i worked the door was a massive fan.
I managed to get her a concert ticket to see him which earned me lots of brownie points.
She eventually moved in with me and George was a regular on the CD player.

Hard to believe - Mary Tyler Moore. She was always so full of life.

I watched a few episodes of The MTM Show on YT last year and was surprised at how well the content and production quality stood up, especially when you consider how badly some other programmes have aged in a shorter period. It was totally watchable now - if it wasn't for the computers and phones, it would have been hard to tell that it wasn't a current show.

Remember seeing him about 5 years ago and thinking wtf? A lot of these diseases are fairly meaningless and names you just hear until you see someone you know or in this case a healthy sportsperson in the prime of their life struck down and in a terrible looking state only a few years later.

Seemed like a bit of rough posh totty to me. Clearly led a troubled existence, but her appearance on IACGMOOH did a lot for her image, and perhaps her own self esteem. We can only hope that she was now at peace with herself and those around her. RIP Ms Parker-Tompkinson

There's an interesting story behind that track.

A huge commercial hit (no 1 across many countries back when the number 1 spot was coveted) but it was also an extremely innovative track that sounded quite unlike other records that preceded it, and spawned a new sub genre amongst dance music's many branches. That a novel, innovative instrumental trance record could boss the charts across the continent and in the UK at the height of guitar britpop marks it down as a pretty special record.

But the story behind it is pretry cool. In Italy italo  piano house had given way to some pretty bombastic and hard dance tracks, further more fatalities of young drivers spiked on Sat nights as people left clubs and raves. Children was written to be played by miles at the end of his sets to chill the crowd and hopefully reduce these deaths.

It was a sleeper hit spreading across the continent : when people heard the track, they loved it. Seminal trance label platypus picked it up, but the story behind that was worth telling. Paul oakenfold heard it for the first time at a club night also attended by the head of platypus and he also wanted it for his pefecto label. He got the drop on platypus and had a verbal agreement but was gazumped when miles' respect for other artists on platypus' roster sealed the deal.

Sounds dated now, but twas a boss ecstasy weep a thon in its pomp. His best track is a track called red3. Also the breeder remix of tilt's version of children is a lovely progressive version that has a lovely drop and extra melodies.

Wp miles, lad. GG

Weird/awful to think that as he was playing that gig last night in America, he knew he was gonna hang himself after it. (unless of course it was spur of the moment decision influenced by substances or something)

I didn't listen to Soundgarden much these days, but in my grunge phase in my youth they were very prominent in my life, along with the other usual suspects Nirvana, Alice In Chains etc. Also really liked some of Audioslave's stuff.

A big loss to the music industry indeed.

The guy who had the best job in the world. He got to interview all my heroes and spent the rest of his time watching movies. Ok, a lot of them were pretty dire, but that's not much of a downside. And he was cool, too. Apart from the poop brown suit & ties.

Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park found hanged on what would have been the birthday of his friend Chris Cornell. Aged 41. He had battle alcohol and drugs issues. I'm assuming he got thinking about his buddy and couldn't take it any more. I'm shocked.

We went to Birmingham to see them two weeks ago today, something we'd always wanted to do, we were looking forward to their next tour seeing then again, hell of a singer. But obviously had some issues. Even their latest single. "I keep dragging around what's bringing me down, if I could just let go I'd be set free" from Heavy.

I can understand why people would have a connection with Dermot O'Leary, and would feel sad if he died.  But right now on facebook, people are publically blubbing over the death of his cat.   It is in half the paper's today.

Yesterday, surely 99% of these people didn't even know he had a cat.

RIP Silver, you will be sorely missed by one man and a few loons.  Hold on to your cats tightly tonight people.  And if you haven't got one, imagine holding on to one belonging to some celeb or other.

The younger folks here (under 50....) may not know much of Glen, & I was not a particular fan, but he was a huge star in his day, & sold over 45 million albums.

True showbiz legend.  75 years in the game.  Incredible.  Didn't know what retirement meant.  Proper proper man.  Truly loved his life and industry.  How can you live your life any better than doing whatever you want to do for your whole life and getting paid fortunes to do it when you had enough money to retire at 50 if you wanted to?  RIP Bruce.  You have lived your dream.  That is all anyone can want out of their life.

Yes & no.

He had a false leg, but the prison Service contrived to lose it. It was, presumably, not attached to Sams at the time.

Walter Becker, 50% of Steely Dan.

Do It Again was the first track of theirs that permeated my largely rock consciousness, but it was Aja that I bought and loved. For me, it was a major discovery of new, cool, sophisticated sounds that could be described as jazz-influenced. I then started buying up their back catalogue and found some fantastic gems. Still listen to them now.

RIP Mr Becker, only 67 years old

Quite surprised nobody else commented on Mr Shepherd's passing, not even on the Newcastle FC thread. Maybe he did plenty wrong - & he did ("dogs" etc) - but he did plenty right, too, (Shearer, Keegan, Sir Bobby etc).

As I mentioned a few days ago, society seems to prefer digging out others than, God forbid, giving praise where praise is due.

Never did one man demonstrate so well how times - thank God - have changed.

He was famous for leering at, perving, groping & generally messing with scantily clad young ladies half his age. And people LOVED him for that.

His Playboy magazine had a peak circulation in the 70's of over 7 million, & was the first print magazine to feature full frontal nudity, in an age where such stuff was taboo.

He was fabulously wealthy & popular at one time.

He was at the very centre of the MTV music revolution which changed so much.

Probably enjoyed his Travelling Wilburys stuff as much as anything, when he teamed up with Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.

He and Jeff Lynne became big mates in the course of time.

Sad news. Heart attack, I believe.

It is now, Wiki gives October 2nd as his date of death.

"Wilbury" was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of Cloud Nine with Jeff Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, "We'll bury 'em in the mix".[2][3] Thereafter, they used the term for any small error in performance

This is one which takes me back to my childhood.  Benson was a programme that everyone of my aged seemed to watch as kids, as was Soap, in which he played the same character.  At the time, he was funny due to his sarcasm and his acting outside his 'station' as a butler.

Thinking about the impact of it now, after seeing this news, it was probably significant to me in that it was exposure, at a very young age, to a very eloquent black character on TV, and one who was portrayed as being clearly more intelligent than the white family members who were employing him.  I'm not sure how many other examples of this there would have been on TV at that time (late 70's, early 80s), but I would expect that the general stereotyping of black characters would have been far more negative in general.

I haven't watched either programme in many years, but I can distinctly remember both of them being one we found genuinely hilarious when talked about in the playground.  Different Strokes was probably the only one that rivalled it (and that was purely down to the character of Arnold being so funny), at least in terms of American sit-coms which we were allowed to watch at that time.

Charles Manson passed away yesterday.

He had been in prison for the last 46 years, guilty of the murder of 9 people, including Sharon Tate. Remarkably, he never committed the murders, but somehow convinced his "followers" to carry out the deathly deeds.

I was brought up to forgive everyone when they died, but Mr Manson is a tough one to forgive.

RIP or RIH?

However, news just breaking that Jana Novotna has lost a long battle with cancer at just 49 years old.  Hopefully, her life story gets a greater share of the headlines today (although I doubt it).

Classic obit in The Times. Bette Davis (allegedly) summoned him to her changing room and, without pausing for introductions, says "I hear you've got a big cock. Meet me here at 8:30".

For a man that had so much sex with women, it's amazing to consider that he was actually gay.

Jimmy Armfield died yesterday.

He was one of the true greats of football, from back in the day when shorts were shorts.

His name was mostly associated with Blackpool, for whim he made over 600 appearances, but he also played for  - even captained - England, too.

I can't recall him as a player, but he became a BBC Radio commentator, I certainly recall that, & his reports were always a delight. He was a genuinely decent, kind & caring man, & rarely spoke ill of anyone.

They're a very 'marmite' band, but Mark E Smith of The Fall has died, which is not entirely surprised as he's looked in poor health for about the last 20 years.

Not a band I ever really got into, but one of my best friends is a huge fan, and practically hero-worshipped him, and is understandably devastated at the news.

Remember standing on The Pop watching Derby County play QPR when Butch came to take a throw right in front of us. The whole stand started chanting "BALDY, BALDY, BALDY"...as you do. Most players would either flick the V's and wind the crowd up or lol pretend not to hear. Wilkins took the throw, turned round to the crowd and performed an elaborate bow and put his thumbs up. Everybody cheered! Turned the crowd on a sixpence in a second and we all clapped him for the rest of the game. Never seen anything like that, such class.

Missed this one.

Takes me back to the early 70s when I regularly went to Belle Vue  and Mauger was at his best.

Belle Vue are now based at the new National Speedway Stadium and we pass it on our way to the Etihad. Prompted conversations with my son and we are supposed to be going next month for the British Final.  His first-time at Speedway and my first time for 40 odd years.

Mary Ellis died on Tuesday aged 101. Sometimes the death of a remarkable person that you have never heard of can pass you by and this lady is one of those such people. This is copied from the BBC News, I know I could have possibly posted a link but she was quite a lady so I do hope you all don't mind me posting some fascinating life events. The news item has photo's which I can't somehow copy over.

Mary was one of the first women to fly Spitfires, heavy bombers and jet aircraft. She joined the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) in 1941. Based at an all-women's ATA pool in Hamble, Hampshire, she recalled that she flew "about 1,000" aircraft during the war including 76 different types.

She was shot at over Bournemouth, possibly by friendly fire, and had a near-miss as she landed in fog at the same time as another Spitfire coming in the opposite direction and also survived a crash-landing when the undercarriage on her Spitfire jammed, causing the engine to overheat.

When the ATA was disbanded in 1945, Mary Wilkins was seconded to the RAF, where she became one of the first women to fly Britain's first jet fighter, the Gloster Meteor.

She went on to become manager of Sandown Airport on the Isle of Wight in the 1950s and 1960s, hiring a former ATA colleague, Vera Strodl, as chief flying instructor. Away from the airport, she indulged a love of fast cars, entering and winning sports car rallies, and ran a fashion boutique.

"She is the most glamorous person I know, enjoys fashion and always wears nail polish. Very strong on etiquette - the right china, the right cutlery, your manners, she could write a book on that." Mary married Don Ellis, a fellow pilot, in 1961, and began to host "legendary parties" her niece Rosemarie Martin recalled before Mary's death.

She continued to live in the marital home beside the runway at Sandown after his death in 2009.

At the age of 101, she was still driving daily to local shops.

In November 2016, she and fellow ATA pilot Joy Lofthouse were honoured in front of members of the Royal Family at the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

"Being an ATA pilot was fantastic," Mary Ellis recalled.

"Up in the air on your own. And you can do whatever you like. I flew 400 Spitfires. And occasionally I would take one up and go and play with the clouds.

"I would like to do it all over again. There was a war on but otherwise it was absolutely wonderful."

RIP Mary, what a life you had  :)

This man passed away yesterday. In my view, he helped to change the lives of every one of us for the better, & yet barely a soul mentioned his death.

I know a lot will disagree that he helped to change our lives for the better, & for sure, it was personal gain not altruism that drove him, but he did contribute over $2 billion to philanthropic causes.

And many of us (me included) would not have recognised him if we had bumped into him.

Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks died of a heart attack this morning, aged 63.

Great band, with his very distinct vocals.  I was too young for their heyday but saw them live in the early 90s, surrounded by a load of 40 something blokes.

I'm now one of those 40-something blokes at gigs.

Interesting choice, quite unbuzzocky really but a great song fronted by Steve Diggle during a Pete Shelley hiatus from the band. I met and had a chat with Steve Diggle in a fish and chip shop between Finchley Road and Swiss Cottage in 1980. Not a lot of people know that.

One of my all time fave bands - clever lyrics, more musicality than people generally remember punk as being but this was pre the Oi and more metal influenced punk bands of the early 80s (many of which I loved too)

When they said Pete Shelley died, age 63, I nearly cried for a few reasons

I am pretty shit at recognising people obviously, always was.

I didn't realise until tonight that Pete Shelley did one of the theme tunes to the Tour De France back in the day.

I almost put up Homosapien, loved that back in the day, never realised it had been banned at the time.  Probably not a buzzcocks song either, but very much a Pete Shelley one?

Pretty depressing all the bands dying off, they were all so young at the time, feeling my age tonight.

Did you have 6 music on tonight? Marc Riley was doing his parralel universe thing where he plays tunes from a certain year.  It was very much featuring the Buzzcocks and Pete Shelley, and then it finished and 6 music announced his death.  But the Parallel Universe section started before the death announcement.  It was a hell of a  coincidence if they didn't know.

I feel a bit left out this morning. I'm from the same era (roughly) as Sheriff & Doobs & am younger than booder or nirvana, but I never even knew Buzzcocks were a band, I only know the phrase "Buzzcocks" from the TV Show.

I went googling this morning & discovered how the TV show (allegedly) got it's name;

The title plays on the names of punk rock band Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks album, and the punk band Buzzcocks

RIP Norman Gimbel the Oscar- and Grammy-winning lyricist, has died at the age of 91.

He was best known for his work in film and television, writing the songs for popular shows such as Laverne & Shirley, Wonder Woman and HR Puffnstuff.

His work included the English lyrics to The Girl from Ipanema also the theme to TV series Happy Days. His most famous song is probably Killing Me Softly with his Song - recorded by Roberta Flack, the Fugees and others.

The Roberta Flack version will always be one of the most beautiful songs ever for me.

Always loved this Guy Garvey Quote

Mark Hollis started from punk and by his own admission he had no musical ability. To go from only having the urge, to writing some of the most timeless, intricate and original music ever is as impressive as the moon landings for me

A little hyperbolic, but not massively so.

Guy Garvey did a 2 hour show devoted to Spirit of Eden not long ago on 6music, I hope they repeat it.

Just had a notification come through that Keith Flint from The Prodigy has been found dead at home this morning, aged 49.

The Fat of the Land was an iconic album from the 1990's, and he was a typical 'wild' frontman, but it's still a shock to see this pop up.

No further details as to cause from what I can see.

liam howlett is a don.

he released a series of mixes called the dirtchamber mixes way back when.

fuses all sorts of jazz, hip hop, dub and rock with all the techno / d n b stuff you associate with the prodigy.

their tracks are built from samples of soul, funk, hip hop etc

they were around before dance had developed niches to fit into.

a big part of why they have been able to release good stuff across the decades and why their stuff was so interesting

A posthumous notification for David Austin who left us on December 18th 2018. It was mentioned on Gardeners World and I didn't know he had died, but he deserves a mention here for the legacy left behind.

He breathed life into the failing English rose and became one of the world’s leading rose breeders. His English Roses — there are 230 varieties to date — are considered the benchmark for modern roses. His company’s seedlings and flowers are sold around the world. His roses have brought him 24 gold medals at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London and the Order of the British Empire in 2007 for services to horticulture.

He famously said that the easiest way to kill a rose was to give it a bad name and that a rose without a fragrance, he would say, was only half a rose.

He knew, through his nose, that old roses like albas, gallicas and damasks had appealing, heady aromas that he wanted to perpetuate by crossing them with hybrid teas which although he was not a fan of, he knew that their best attributes would alter the future of the old English roses, and so he did. He painstakingly brought new roses to life a process which takes 9 years from pollination to market.

I haven't been in a garden centre yet that didn't have a David Austin rose for sale.

His daughter Claire is a leading expert on perennials, irises and peonies.

A belated RIP David.

Dan Robbins the artist who created painting by numbers has died aged 93.

From the painting by numbers museum: His work has been displayed on more walls than that of any other artist. This was true in the past, is still true today and is most likely a record that will stand in the future.

Americans in the 1950s had the time and money to take up new hobbies and Max Klein, President of the Palmer Paint Company in Detroit was looking for an idea that could make anyone an artist and thereby expand the demand for paint. Dan Robbins, making a living creating washable paint sets for kids , was interested in the challenge.
After months of trial and error Dan remembered how Leonardo da Vinci would hand out numbered patterns to his apprentices and thought, “Why not do the same for anyone who wants to paint but does not have the talent to draw or mix colors? All I have to do is create a numbered outline and provide the corresponding numbered colors.” He tried to explain the idea to Max but it was obvious that Max wasn’t getting it. Finally, Max threw up his hands saying, “ Don’t tell me. Show me. You’re the artist.

Leonardo da Vinci’s, neat trick might not have groomed a generation of geniuses in the Renaissance, but in Robbins' hands, the paint-by-numbers concept won over a generation of American hobbyists and as his fan letters continue to attest, he inspired legions of new artists. He also made painting and displaying art more democratic than anyone could have imagined.

As a kid I loved painting by numbers. RIP Dan.

The 70s saw Kendall return to the public eye with his now infamous 3 way relationship with Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren. Kendall said to be the inspiration of McLaren's now developing ruthless personality. Westwood is also adamant to this day that Kendall was the true inspiration behind "Sex" and "Too fast to live Too young to die". In this period Kendall touched many of the greats who went onto shape the world, and his influence can be seen in all walks of life – From the Sex Pistols to Paul Raymond's revue bars whom he was quality control manager for many years.

Also in the sixties, he tried his hand at acting with a cameo role in the film "2001, a Space Odyssey", where he played one of the apes surrounding the black obelisk at the start of the film. Appalled by the violence in the later "enlightened ape" scene, he stormed off the set, ending his acting career.

Well your secret love's no secret any more.

I always associated "Secret Love" with Kathy Kirby.

Memory jogged, I looked up Kathy Kirby on wiki, I could not even remember if she was still alive.  (She died 8 years ago this Sunday apparently).

Wish I had not now, found all this rather sad....

Following her bankruptcy in 1975 and a court case following an arrest over an unpaid hotel bill, she was referred to St Luke's psychiatric hospital in London in 1979. Following her discharge, she lived witha female fan, Laraine McKay, and said that they intended to marry. McKay was imprisoned for fraud and forgery. In the early 1980s Kirby had relationships with musician David Cross and lawyer Alan Porter.

Kirby was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was in poor physical and mental health for much of her life. After her retirement she lived in a series of apartments and hotels in west London, settling in an apartment in Emperor's Gate, South Kensington, surviving on state benefits and some royalties, and maintaining what has been called a "Garbo-esque" seclusion. Shortly before her death Kirby moved to Brinsworth House in Twickenham at the insistence of her niece Sarah, Lady Thatcher, wife of Mark Thatcher. Another niece, Claudia, became Lady Rothermere after marrying Viscount Rothermere.[27]

Kirby died on 19 May 2011, a few days after moving to Brinsworth House. According to a message posted by a relative on a fan website, she suffered a heart attack. She was survived by her sister Pat and her brother Douglas

Kev itt now, but I think he's more a Dusty Springfield type of guy.

Stop throwing out these blasts from the past Tom, every time you do that I have to feed my Wiki addiction & go look them up. I was not even sure if she was still alive. (Nope, been gone 20 years).

All of this is new to me;

Some of Springfield's biographers and journalists have speculated that she had two personalities: shy, quiet, Mary O'Brien, and the public face she had created as Dusty Springfield. An editorial review at Publishers Weekly of Valentine and Wickham's 2001 biography, Dancing with Demons, finds that "the confidence [Springfield] exuded on vinyl was a facade masking severe insecurities, addictions to drink and drugs, bouts of self-harm and fear of losing her career if exposed as a lesbian".[ Simon Bell, one of Springfield's session singers, disputed the twin personality description: "It's very easy to decide there are two people, Mary and Dusty, but they were the one person. Dusty was most definitely Dusty right to the end."

In her early career, much of her odd behaviour was seen as more or less in fun, described as a "wicked" sense of humour, including her food fights and hurling crockery down stairs. Springfield had a great love for animals, particularly cats, and became an advocate for animal protection groups. She enjoyed reading maps and would intentionally get lost to navigate her way out.[13] In the 1970s and early 1980s, Springfield's alcoholism and drug addiction affected her musical career. She was hospitalised several times for self-harm by cutting herself, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Springfield was never reported to be in a heterosexual relationship and this meant that the issue of her sexual orientation was raised frequently during her life. From mid-1966 to the early 1970s Springfield lived in a domestic partnership with fellow singer Norma Tanega. In September 1970, Springfield told Ray Connolly of the Evening Standard:

Many other people say I'm bent, and I've heard it so many times that I've almost learned to accept it ... I know I'm perfectly as capable of being swayed by a girl as by a boy. More and more people feel that way and I don't see why I shouldn't.

By the standards of 1970, that was a bold statement. Three years later, she explained to Chris Van Ness of the Los Angeles Free Press:

I mean, people say that I'm gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay. I'm not anything. I'm just ... People are people ... I basically want to be straight ... I go from men to women; I don't give a shit. The catchphrase is: I can't love a man. Now, that's my hang-up. To love, to go to bed, fantastic; but to love a man is my prime ambition ... They frighten me.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Springfield became involved in several romantic relationships with women in Canada and the US that were not kept secret from the gay and lesbian community. From late 1972 to 1978, Springfield had an "off and on" domestic relationship with Faye Harris, a US photojournalist. In 1981 she had a six-month love affair with singer-musician Carole Pope of the rock band Rough Trade. During periods of psychological and professional instability, Springfield's involvement in some intimate relationships, influenced by addiction, resulted in episodes of personal injury.

In 1982 Springfield met an American actress Teda Bracci at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting; the pair moved in together in April 1983, and seven months later, they exchanged vows at a wedding ceremony which was not legally recognised under California law.[148] The pair had a "tempestuous" relationship which led to an altercation with both Springfield and Bracci hospitalised; Springfield had been smashed in the mouth by Bracci wielding a saucepan and had teeth knocked out, requiring plastic surgery. The pair had separated within two years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoAzpa1x7jU

I remember him mostly for the Guinness adverts.

The Hitcher and Blind fury were amongst my favourite films of the 1980’s

RIP

Wanted: Dead or Alive was a great film.
Hobo With A Shotgun not so much - more gratuitous violence than all of Taratino put together!

Lord Bell - RIP

Maggie's favourite Ad-man, the one who sold the Saatchi's "Labour Isn't Working" poster ad of the 1982 election campaign. Hugely popular with his agency staff.

Pal Benko, chess grandmaster, died yesterday, aged 91.

https://en.chessbase.com/post/pl-benkoe-dies-at-91

With a career in which he competed with the very best in the great 60s and 70s era, with the likes of Fischer, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Botvinnik and plenty besides, Benko's name will live on in the gambit he invented:

Very Sad.

Very. I don't know how it got as far as it did without someone somewhere in the powers that be surely being able to do something but it's worrying.

I’d forgotten all about Eddie Money until I saw his cameo appearance in The Kominsky Method earlier this year. Baby Hold On and Two Tickets to Paradise were a couple of my favourite songs of the period when I lived in Vancouver, so he’ll always hold a special place.

Now I read that he’s died from cancer aged 70 - a day after viewers saw the episode of Real Money (reality TV show) where he was diagnosed....

RIP Eddie

RIP Eddie Money. There is a video on Youtube with him singing Take me home tonight integrating with Be my Baby in 1988 with Ronnie Spector on the Letterman show.

Also we have lost Ric Ocasek of the Cars aged 75, who died of heart failure in his sleep. The Cars recorded 8 albums and had a few hits - but will always be remembered for Drive/Live Aid which brings me to another posthumous RIP.

Drive and Just what I needed were not sung by Ric but by their co-founder and enigmatic bassist Benjamin Orr. He sadly passed away far too young in 2000, aged 53 of pancreatic cancer. He kept performing after his diagnosis until 7 days before he passed.

RIP Ric and Ben.

Al Alvarez, author of The Biggest Game in Town, has died aged 90.

https://uk.pokernews.com/news/2019/09/al-alvarez-author-of-the-biggest-game-in-town-passes-away-36228.htm

Many of us who got into the game via the Late Night Poker era will be familiar with this book, which along with Tony Holden's 'Big Deal' were great scene-setters for the old, Binions WSOP events.  These books created the spark in me that made me want to play a WSOP ME one day, although the experience of such at the Rio had become unrecognisable from the earlier events by the time I managed it.

Both books are still well worth reading, albeit more from a historic / sentimental perspective.

Ginger Baker, who has been very ill for  while, has passed away.

If you want to see all sides of the enigmatic drummer, try & watch the superb TV Documentary, "Beware of Mr Baker".  If ever there was a genuine warts & all documentary this was it. Fabulous watch.

Here's the You Tube version of "Beware of Mr Baker".

The title comes from his general demeanour, or perhaps because whilst filming it, he took exception to the interviewer & hit him across the face with his walking stick, breaking his nose.

Compelling viewing, & I shall have to watch it again in the next few days.

It's certainly not one of those sugar-coated documentaries, quite the opposite.
