Pal Benko, chess grandmaster, died yesterday, aged 91.

https://en.chessbase.com/post/pl-benkoe-dies-at-91

With a career in which he competed with the very best in the great 60s and 70s era, with the likes of Fischer, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Botvinnik and plenty besides, Benko's name will live on in the gambit he invented:

Very. I don't know how it got as far as it did without someone somewhere in the powers that be surely being able to do something but it's worrying.

I’d forgotten all about Eddie Money until I saw his cameo appearance in The Kominsky Method earlier this year. Baby Hold On and Two Tickets to Paradise were a couple of my favourite songs of the period when I lived in Vancouver, so he’ll always hold a special place.

Now I read that he’s died from cancer aged 70 - a day after viewers saw the episode of Real Money (reality TV show) where he was diagnosed....

RIP Eddie

RIP Eddie Money. There is a video on Youtube with him singing Take me home tonight integrating with Be my Baby in 1988 with Ronnie Spector on the Letterman show.

Also we have lost Ric Ocasek of the Cars aged 75, who died of heart failure in his sleep. The Cars recorded 8 albums and had a few hits - but will always be remembered for Drive/Live Aid which brings me to another posthumous RIP.

Drive and Just what I needed were not sung by Ric but by their co-founder and enigmatic bassist Benjamin Orr. He sadly passed away far too young in 2000, aged 53 of pancreatic cancer. He kept performing after his diagnosis until 7 days before he passed.

RIP Ric and Ben.

Al Alvarez, author of The Biggest Game in Town, has died aged 90.

https://uk.pokernews.com/news/2019/09/al-alvarez-author-of-the-biggest-game-in-town-passes-away-36228.htm

Many of us who got into the game via the Late Night Poker era will be familiar with this book, which along with Tony Holden's 'Big Deal' were great scene-setters for the old, Binions WSOP events.  These books created the spark in me that made me want to play a WSOP ME one day, although the experience of such at the Rio had become unrecognisable from the earlier events by the time I managed it.

Both books are still well worth reading, albeit more from a historic / sentimental perspective.

Ginger Baker, who has been very ill for  while, has passed away.

If you want to see all sides of the enigmatic drummer, try & watch the superb TV Documentary, "Beware of Mr Baker".  If ever there was a genuine warts & all documentary this was it. Fabulous watch.

Here's the You Tube version of "Beware of Mr Baker".

The title comes from his general demeanour, or perhaps because whilst filming it, he took exception to the interviewer & hit him across the face with his walking stick, breaking his nose.

Compelling viewing, & I shall have to watch it again in the next few days.

It's certainly not one of those sugar-coated documentaries, quite the opposite.

R.I.P Ginger. Great drummer and an outstanding list of associated acts on his Wiki.
