Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Won't Back Down" at "America: A Tribute to Heroes" telethon, September 21, 2001.

Wow that was quick.  His death isn't even on wikipedia.  Had a soft spot for him.  RIP

Ugh.

He was at the very centre of the MTV music revolution which changed so much.

Probably enjoyed his Travelling Wilburys stuff as much as anything, when he teamed up with Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.

He and Jeff Lynne became big mates in the course of time.

Sad news. Heart attack, I believe.

Another empty chair, then.

That set me off on a rapturous hour of youtubing.

There are some big shoes left to fill.

This is a nice piece from the Beatles induction into the rock & roll hall of fame.

Of the 5 members of the Wilburys, three - Harrison, Orbison and now Petty - have all died.

From wiki

"Wilbury" was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of Cloud Nine with Jeff Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, "We'll bury 'em in the mix".[2][3] Thereafter, they used the term for any small error in performance

Very enjoyable Tony, I'd not seen that before.

Even old poodle-perm wasn't too bad.

This is one which takes me back to my childhood.  Benson was a programme that everyone of my aged seemed to watch as kids, as was Soap, in which he played the same character.  At the time, he was funny due to his sarcasm and his acting outside his 'station' as a butler.

Thinking about the impact of it now, after seeing this news, it was probably significant to me in that it was exposure, at a very young age, to a very eloquent black character on TV, and one who was portrayed as being clearly more intelligent than the white family members who were employing him.  I'm not sure how many other examples of this there would have been on TV at that time (late 70's, early 80s), but I would expect that the general stereotyping of black characters would have been far more negative in general.

I haven't watched either programme in many years, but I can distinctly remember both of them being one we found genuinely hilarious when talked about in the playground.  Different Strokes was probably the only one that rivalled it (and that was purely down to the character of Arnold being so funny), at least in terms of American sit-coms which we were allowed to watch at that time.
