Dunno why Roland didn't bet the flop- probably thought the other guy would only call with an Ace - which meant he'd almost certainly be outkicked if called, and not win any extra chips otherwise, so it would have been a bet to nothing. Better to check and let the other guy represent the Ace on the turn?
As for checking the two pair on the end, maybe he thought Roland would bet if checked to? Don't think it was a great idea to check, though.

Brian asked me to report this hand and ask the forum if they would have played it the same, from both player's perspectives.
Roland De Wolf raises from the button to 700 with A-7 off.
The small blind calls.
A-5-8 rainbow
both check
Turn = T
Small blind bets 600
Roland calls
River = 6
Both check
Mateyboy shows A-6
Roland...bet the flop and the turn....
Mateyboy...valuebet the river....
amateurs......
(Mateyboy plays all these tourneys but he never gets any better...)

Sonopy you are missing a classic DOND mate, just turned down £28k with 5 left, £1, £3k, £50K, £35k and £250k!!!
Now £250k and £1, should he swap or accept the offer??

Lee Brisco is running strong on 24k
Lee raised with A-K preflop and probably had a party in his pants when the flop came A-K-3
He checked, Matyeboy bet.
Lee then raised, Mateyboy raised again.
Lee moved all-in, Mateyboy passes A-J.

I think the banker could offer even less.
I reckon most would take the 75k
ps. what happened?
