This is a hand from the uk student poker championships.
It's the second level 100/200, from a 10k starting stack. I'm sitting on about 16k on the button.
SB hasn't played many pots so far. I haven't really got much of an idea of how he plays.
It folds round to the cutoff, who raises to 600.
I look down at kings and make it 1500 to play.
Small blind calls.
Cutoff folds.
Flop comes 2 3 3, rainbow.
SB bets 1500
I raise another 5000, leaving me about 8k back.
After a brief pause SB pushes for another 5k.
Advice please!
What do you think he's got?
Would you call?
I'll post what happened later.

if hasn't played many pots then i doubt he has a 2 or a 3 in his hand (apart from maybe a pair of them) but he's playing it very fast so it seems unlikely he has either of them.
I think I'd have to call here.

The fact you are asking makes me suspicious, normally means he had aces, or you folded! That said:
Given the little information you have on the SB you cant put him on a small pair or ace rag so that all but rules out a full house or trips. The board is about as good as you could ask for with KK against a cautious player, though obviously you have to work out (with little info) if you think he has aces of not. If he did have aces I am sure he would have re-raised to leave him heads up vs you, or win the pot...or at least I would have.
I put him on a over pair, max QQ and go all in.

It's much more likely he has QQ/JJ/TT than AA.
Even if he has AA or by a barmy chance A3, 22 or 33, there's 16.8k in the pot and it's costing you 5k to call.

It wouldn't be AA with an experienced player I suppose...playing AA from the SB and flat calling a RR? wouldn't be what I would expect, but then again he may be an inexperienced player...can't see a 2 or a 3 there either
over 3-1 to call
I think I call, expect to see QQ/JJ.....

I managed to persuade myself that he had 33 or AA and passed my kings face up.
The guy showed an Ace and folded. So he either had AA, A2 (doubtful), A3 (doubtful), or AK/AQ.
I think it was a bad fold in retrospect. I couldn't really have hoped for a better flop for kings, yet i committed half my stack then passed.

insta call for me. if he has the 3, unlucky, but highly unlikely considering him calling the big bet and raise preflop.
Would have put him on AT-Q or TT-QQ.

if you're afraid he may have aces due to his tightness. DON'T RERAISE SO MUCH.
you have to call here the way you've played it. if he flips over aces thats poker but about 3/4 times when this kinda play takes place they dont have aces. it looks like an overplayed AK to me.
it's a deep stack tournament with minimal buy-in. imagine the advantage you have taking his chips right here!

 In retrospect I think it was an overplayed AK and if I'd have won that hand I probably would have made it into the money. I can't really work out why I folded. I think it was the occassion. In a normal tourney (i.e. not the uk student poker championships) I'd call that 10/10 times. I think I's trying to make some sort of heroic/genius fold but ended up just pissing away most of my stack when I should have been amongst the chip leaders after that hand... oh well... always next year. |
