I had heard that only around 5% of the people who play poker actually make a profit? Is this true? Where does this figure come from

Everyone seems to be a winning player. Almost everyone ( not talking about Blonde ) in the countless forums on the internet claim to be a winning player.  Someone must be telling a few lies.  I am learning so I dont claim to be a winning player.....yet  Cool

when ever you get a competitive activity, you'll inevitably get blokes lying and exagerating. most break even players are losing, most people making a "small profit" are losing and most people that are genuinely turning a profit, it's considerably less than they're saying.

when you think about the millions of micro limit / small stakes players online 5% isnt an unreasonable figure. most people losing are only losing small amounts though.

You have to be careful in the terminology you use when asking this question as well.

In the title of the thread you ask "how many people are winning?" and then in the first post of the thread you ask "how many people actually make a profit?" - to me these are two totally different things.

If player A plays poker for 12 months, 5 days a week for 6 hours a day and after the 12 months are up he has made $500 profit then yes to me he has shown a profit but to me he is not winning.

He has played a total of 1560 hours of poker for $500 - an hourly rate of $0.32 per hour. How many people do you know who work for less than this?

Obviously there are players out there who just play for the social side of the game, its just a bit of fun to pass some time or an opportunity to catch up with friends - but if you play the game for fun then you are not too concerned whether you are a winning player or not, so long as you have a good time.

in this game i believe that if you endeavour to learn the art of poker, and read articles and listen to advice from winning players who have been round the block a few times, then it becomes a lot easier to get into the winning grove,  i reckon about 12% are long term winners

Good point!

I haven't met many people who admit that they are not 'winning' players. Would be interesting if someone ran a pole on here to see what the percentage is on this forum. Of course the wording of the the question would have to be clear first.

www.sharkscope.com  after a few searches it suprised me a bit with the actual amount of players turning a profit, but then again the searchs were "names".

I read that 25% are winning, 55% are losing and 35% are breaking even.
