Post by: leethefish on March 17, 2011, 07:35:21 PM
some of you know me personally and some just via blonde some not at all so i will tell you a bit about myself and why i am doing this...

i left the army 14 ish years ago weighing approx 13 stone and very fit ....

up until last week i have not trained at all since leaving the army .... i gave up smoking a year ago and now weigh 17.5 stone.

i now have said motivation .....

i have decided along with some friends and my nephew to do the yorkshire 3 peaks challenge on June the 11Th this year reasons for my motivation are as follows

1,I always feel guilty that i dont do anything for charity and its about time i did.
2,the charity LOROS is an amazing charity that looked after my gran for the final days of her life.

Please dont take this the wrong way - but it is the Yorkshire 3 peaks!

If I remember rightly - there is a 12 hour target for the 3 peaks

So ill go for £10 if you do it in less than 10 hours

and ill give you another £10 if you lose 2.5 stone between now and the event

Hey Lee. Last Thursday Mrs Red asked me to pick up a prescription from the chemist. It was a beautiful day and I had nothing else to do, so I decided to walk (It's 9 miles there and back)

Since I've been doing my weight loss thing I've been jogging 3 miles every other day, so I though walking 9 miles would be easy peasy. WRONG!!! It made my legs ache like buggery.

I've researched it since and apparently, you use different muscles for walking and jogging, so I'm going to incorporate some long (ish) distance walks into my regimen.

So that brings me to my question. How far will you have to walk to do the three peaks?

23.5 miles
most of my training has been walking
however if i go on my own i like to run/walk and try to run part or all the way up hills
i have been told ...whether true or not that a 45 min walk is as good as  for exercise a 30 min run

Yes. Apparently 1 mile burns 100 calories whether you walk or run. Walking is easier on the joints, running is better for cardio.

Interval training ftw.

PS- I think 10 hours is way too ambitious.

i have only ever said i will do my best at ten hours ...just to try and get extra sponsorship

and i will try but we are going as a group of 7 and i will only be as fast as our slowest man!!
would not rush off in front in case someone got injured etc.

in addition to this i haven't trained at all in almost 14 years
so the weight is a problem as well!...
up to now i am weighing in at 17 stone so also still need to lose 2 stone !!

was thinking about this the other day and reckon it may actually be harder to do it over 3 days as by the 3rd you'll really be suffering from the first 2. best to do the lot in one go maybe

Sorry to derail the thread a bit, put me down for £20.

I would seriously do it though Tom, if you want to. I watched the channel 4 program of Katie and her beautiful friends and it made me want to do something to raise money for her charity, so inspirational, I'll save that post for another time, this could be it.

Lol. You know it yourself sugar on CNCs is just mad! I am a sugar junkie myself but that is taking the biscuit... the sugar coated with extra sugar biscuit.

Keep it up the diet though fella. I'm trying to get back into it, but its hard when my missus is away and i have to cook/dial for myself.

If you compare this to what I ate yesterday you'll probably see that I consumed a similar amount of food. Mine though was all more protein based rather than carbs and was also considerably less fat.

Firstly your breakfast.

The easiest way to improve this is obviously to cut out the extra sugar and use skimmed milk.

Although skimmed milk sucks as first you soon get used to it and then it's lovely.

A great alternative would be weetabix if you like them with skimmed milk and honey to sweeten instead of sugar.

Cup of coffee + 2 sugars. Meh. Best to get rid and just drink water but it ain't gonna kill ya.

1200 meal is so wrong. Cobs are pure shite if you want to lose weight. I'm going to guess at processed ham as well? Can you have chicken in a pitta pocket? So much better and also tasty. Obviously skip the crisps and the muller. You don't need them, they're purely there because you like the taste. It won't take long before you can happily do without.

1500. Ice cream wafers are not a good thing :) If you need a snack have a banana. Glass of water is good.

1730. Doesn't look too bad. Prefer to see lean / extra lean mince. Mash probably cooked with milk and butter which isn't ideal. How's the gravy cooked? Is it thetasty way where you use all the fat that dripped out of the mince? Overall though not too bad and if you eat very good all day I wouldn't mind this main meal staying the same.

Change the diet coke for water.

2000. No comment :D. Different supper required please. Maybe a bowl of cereal with skimmed milk.

Lol at the maryland cookie. I fuckin love them things but they've got to go as you know.

1200 meal isn't too bad. Prefer to get it on a pitta or even better on it's own. The bread isn't necessary. Don't mind a bit of salad cream to make it bearable.

Obviously lose the french fries.

caloriewise don't think there's a lot to call between the same amount of sugar and honey but you'll probably use less honey plus sugar contains absolutely nothing of any benefit to the body, honey contains lots of goodness

Gatso's spot on. Not much difference nutritionally but honey is much sweeter so you'll need less to satify your sweet tooth.

Great stuff Lee. Well done!!

Obviously the pizza and chips isn't great but you've got to start somewhere and you have.

As for the pittas you really want 100% wholewheat or at least wholemeal pittas.

Some bread is as good as pittas but you really have to check the labels. Wholemeal pittas are easier because you'll usually be on the right side of reasonable.

Good luck for the weekend and next week. Hope you can stick it out until next friday's treat day.

Fwiw I always used to have a treat day as well. That day was Saturday when I could eat and drink whatever I wanted. I only put this treat day in once I'd reached my target though not while I was cutting fat.

I'd never heard about garcinia. A quick google and they look like they're just an appetite suppressant extracted from a plant. Can't see them hurting one bit mate. Go for it and let us know what you think.

Use them to help cut down on the snacking though not to stop you eating your healthy meals. Don't forget you still need nutrition especially as you've got a big walk coming up soon.

Good stuff Lee.

The 1300 meal looks a bit big to me unless you're doing a lot of training. I'd cut the chicken down to about 200 and save the banana for a snack later.

You'll struggle to use more than 60g of protein at one sitting so your body has to store it somewhere. Invariably it will store it as fat.

If you don't like the pitta don't eat it. The less you eat the better.

No need to list the salad items. Eat as much of that crap as you like.

Mrs fish read this for the first time today and pointed out that she provides a healthy meal 6 days week (we always have takeaway on Friday)
and it looks as if she feeds me crap all the time
so i must point out that my unhealthy eating consisted of throwing my sandwiches in the bin and going to MacDonald's during the day
and eating an easter egg (last year) per night cos they where only a pound (my only reason)
also a couple ......ok 3 packets of crisps whilst grinding online
++ god knows how many cans/bottles of coke and red bull

What's the fat content of your salad cream?  Seems like you might be ruining the healthy meal with a dollop of saturated fats?

Some salsa relish (that you can make yourself or buy ready-made obviously) is probably going to be a hell of a lot healthier imo.

Anyway, how's the training going?  What is that consisting of?  Are you walking everyday (or most days) and what time do you usually go out?  I run in the morning, before I start work.  If I don't, I find it too easy to let excuses stop me from running that day (work too late, too tired after the long day, too hungry so need to eat first, too late so will run tomorrow, etc.).

Seriously good stuff Lee. That target of yours might still be attainable if you really want it.

Like Dan says you need to check the label on your salad cream. A few squirts of that stuff could really ruin your great efforts.

Have you weighed yourself at all yet? To be honest in your shoes I probably wouldn't bother. If you're being honest with what you're eating then you will have lost weight no matter what so you don't need to know.

Also as Dan says (really must stop agreeing with Dan twice in one post) we need to know about your training as well.

You've made great progress with your diet but your training is equally important if you're going to be ready for your long walk that you've got coming up.

at the min training every evening varying times just about to go now !!
i have been running the last two nights not far but walking is getting boring
plus sit ups every day and playing football with the kids.
i had one week off from training week before last not done a long walk for a while but got one planned for Thursday.
Heinz salad creme maybee not good but makes the chicken and tuna taste soooooo nice

That's because it's full of saturated fat you big fool!! ;)

I believe they do a reduced fat version. Give it a try mate if you can't bear the chicken and tuna without. Don't go using twice as much of it though because obviously that defeats the object.

Honestly mate you'd be amazed at the damage that little bit of salad cream is doing. You're putting in a great deal of effort and potentially spoiling it with the salad cream.

Do you want to hit 15st by the time of your walk? If you really do then cope with bland food for a few weeks. After you've hit 15st you can then slip a few treats back in as you will only be maintaining what you have achieved not trying to further reduce.

It only a few weeks.

So if you do well you're going to fuck it up by drinking lager?

Lee it's only a few weeks to your walk by which time you hope to be 15st. If you're 16st on Sunday then you have a chance. Why blow it for the sake of a couple of pints?

Why not reward yourself by giving yourself a pat on the back and carrying on for a couple more weeks?

Surely you'll still have a good time if you don't drink? I'll be there on the water to offer some support.

Are you going to take your own food as well? There isn't anything on the DTD menu that would be ideal for you at the moment. If that's not practical you could eat your diet food on friday and have your Sunday treat as some DTD food.

Tell you what.

If you can go until the day of your walk without drinking any alcohol I'll stump up a score for your charity walk. (Assuming you do the walk obv.)

Doesn't matter what your weight is all I'm bothered about is the fact that you've put in the absolute maximum effort.

Maximum effort doesn't involve drinking lager.

I'm in exactly the same boat mate. I love a drink but I'm not going to have one until I go away for my birthday on the 10th June.

After your walk on the 11th you can have a few pints as a reward. How does that sound?

No alcohol for either of us for just under 3 weeks.

I'd honestly love to see you hit 15st. It'll be tough but unless you give it 100% you haven't got a chance.

Hellmans do an extra-light mayonnaise that isn't really mayonnaise according to the connoisseurs, but it's just 3% fat. Not sure what other bad shit is in it but it's going to be a damn sight better than salad cream and even the 'low' fat versions are often still 20%+ fat.

As you have been doing, check the label on anything that claims to be light or low.

If you're bored with the walking, run-walking might be the way to go. Run for a few minutes, then walk for a few. Mix in some slow running and the occasional sprint, and then walk to recover. It's good for the heart as well.

Oh and I have to agree with Matt (this is becoming a bit disconcerting), don't reward yourself with a beer until you've achieved your goal. Not only will you set yourself back with a few beers at this stage and undo the hard work you've been doing, if you wait till you finish the challenge imagine how good the beer will taste then!

i was thinking the same thing about drinking on sunday its just that Ive been looking forward to it since it was announced.
a few pints and laugh with like minded people supporting IMO the most amazing charity.

HOWEVER
the charity i am doing my walk for is also an amazing charity
the effort i have put in and the help and support of friends and family could /would be in ruins so

i will only be drinking water (and the odd cup of tea) on sunday in fact no alcohol till June 11Th you have my word matt and dan.

 ;tightend;

More good stuff Lee.

You have to be really careful with the 30% less fat claims as they can be very misleading.

A few years ago there was a new mars bar came out that was 30% less fat (or something similar).

A quick check of the wrapper and it was just a mars bar that was 30% smaller. Exactly the same percentage but yes there's no denying that it was 30% less than before.

Total fat is what you need to check and as a rough quide anything around 5% or less is fine.

the family are all helping my seven year old came on arun the other night (he was on his bike)
the kids are always saying look dad only 98 calories in this or 0.1 g of fat ...
Alison has been eating similar to me she also wants to shed a few pounds ..so its all good in the fish household!

whilst at tesco
looked at pickled beetroot and onions  (the calories and fat content)  its got fuck all in it ... can i eat shit loads of this stuff like with my chicken at lunch ?

tikay eats a shit load of beetroot when he's doing his weightloss. I'd imagine you can eat loads of em but may get problems with taking in too much acid (indigestion maybe). also need to keep an eye on whether they've got added salt I suppose though a study I saw last week suggested that like most advice from the 80s and 90s the general advice on salt is a load of bollocks

Not a beetroot expert but if there's nothing in it I guess it can't be too bad.

Link to study please!

From what I've read about salt, it's dangerous to eat excessive amounts of sodium if you're not taking in sufficient amounts of water to compensate.  Obviously above a certain amount you'd be unable to take on enough water, so the body then absorbs it and it can do damaging things.  Always interested in more studies though!

training today planned 15 mile walk........

we managed just under... 14.6 miles    however using a stepometer to calculate the distance is not very accurate we have found before that you travel slightly further than it indicates.

we are estimating nearer 17-18 miles

i really enjoyed it and had quite a few running spells.

today's food,

0730 3 weetobix one tea spoon of honey skimmed milk
cup of tea one sugar.

1000 cup of tea one sugar.

1130 (early lunch due to walk) 3 very small wholemeal cobs with tuna and salad creme beetroot and pickled onions

1430 (mid walk) small tub of melon and banana

mid walk one small bottle of boost (energy drink)

1730 small fillet of cod (no batter) small fillet of smoked haddock, peas carrots and steamed potatoes
weight watchers nil  fat yogurt

1830 cup of tea one sugar.

When I was doing my weight loss, I quickly realised that weighing myself every day and posting the weight on my diary kept me on the straight and narrow.

Sorry mate, I didn't say it to punish you.

It's just that when I was on my weight loss diet, a day off put me back to square one for the week, I assumed it would probably be the same for you.

Harsh doesn't come in to it. It's just my opinion. There is no reason it should matter to you. You don't have to convince me that you do or do not deserve a treat day. (You will lose more weight by not having them though).

Good luck with it anyway.

Tit!!

Wow! I knew it would be bad but....

Struggling for time Tom so a one word review seemed appropriate.

Agree with you completely that one cheat day ruins a whole weeks work.

As I said on my own thread you have to be so careful with 'cheat' days because you sometimes feel that you have no choice but to eat a load of shit.

If Lee wants to f**k everything up let him, that's his choice. I'm not going to moan.

At least he's owned up to it which is something.

I'm a bit concerned that he's still planning another cheat day for after the walk. You don't have to force cheat days. If it happens it happens you take it as a cheat day and get on with it. If you focus on having a bad day it is 100% going to happen.

If you're not bothered about hitting 15st by the time of your walk do what you want.

Overall you're doing really well but for the sake of 2 weeks I thought you might decide to skip your cheat day.

Looking forward to it all week is a bit of a worry as well. It suggests that you're eating well so that you don't have to feel guilty having a chinese rather than eating well because you want to lose weight.

They're very different reasons for dietting.

I diet because I want to have a slim waist and a big chest. I don't diet so that I have 15 pints and a kebab on Friday night.

Have a serious think about your real reasons for doing this diet. What is it that drives you to eat what you have been eating?

I had a really bad food week last week. Mrs Red was away and I had a busy time work wise, which means no time for exercise and too much eating out. (just weak excuses really)

Anyway, I've managed to get myself 5lb above my target weight, so I'm right back on the wagon until I've shifted it.

I might make it to DTD today. If you see me, come and say hello.

More good stuff Lee.

There's still a chance of hitting 15st by the 11th June.

It's going to be tough but if you keep going for walks / runs and don't have any slips with the diet it's definitely possible.

I really hope you can do it.

Just think how easy the walk's going to be if you hit your goal?

To give you an idea imagine trying the walk carrying a bag weighing almost a full stone?

Good luck for the next 2 weeks!!

I watched biggest loser UK the other day. One guy lost 31lbs in the first week. Was pretty insane.

I know what to do, its doing it thats the problem. Hardest part is changing ya mindset. Once you do that the rest falls into place.

Press ups and sit ups won't make you lose weight.

Just rest if you think you need it.

As long as you're not just using it as an excuse to sit on your arse then it's definitely best.

Whey heyyyyy!

Great work fella! Please take this in the right way, but I wouldn't go crazy trying to hit 15st before the walk. If the walk is Saturday, I'd be tapering your food intake upwards from thursday, just slightly, to prepare for the energy use on the day. You don't want to be energyless after the first hill!

You will easily get down to 15 the following week, don't forget this was training for the walk as much as it was to loose weight. You have done a grand job so far, and you wouldn't want to suffer on the walk just to make a notional target!

thanks both

i was going to ask this question what to do towards the end of the week thanks guy

however i really want the extra sponsorship for loros and make my weight.

i would like loads of advice on this please ....not that i don't agree with you guy !!!

For once I agree with Guy.

You'll need carbs stored in your body as well as refuelling with them during the walk. Otherwise your body will have to burn fat to create the energy and it's not very efficient at that. This is what happens when marathon runners hit the wall.

If you want to carbo-load before the challenge (which is what runners do before a race like a marathon) you need to reduce the amount of protein you consume two to three days before the day, otherwise you won't be able to get enough carbohydrate on board.

Once you've done the challenge, then go back to what you were doing previously.

Great stuff Lee.

I know nothing about carb loading for this sort of thing.

Just a couple of things for discussion and hopefully a bit more input from others.

Dan is suggesting that a reduction in protein is necessary for carb loading.

This makes perfect sense but don't go mad Lee. He's not saying drop all of your protein just a bit.

What Dan is talking about is for marathon runners. Your challenge is not a marathon. It's physically demanding but it doesn't compare to a marathon in terms of energy usage.

I've just had a look at the challenge site and it's basically half hour mile targets. 23.5 miles in 12 hours.

When I do an 6 mile walk with Ronnie it takes about 2.5 hours. This includes a ciggie/cup of tea break and is a reasonably steady pace. There's a few decent hills as well although obviously not like the 3 peaks will be.

I'm pretty sure that I could do this same walk 4 times in a day and not need to worry about carb loading beforehand.

With a steady pace you can afford to be consuming carbs during your walk. You aren't going to hurt yourself like you would if you were eating during a marathon.

Perhaps you could buy a box of the flapjacks I have? They contain slow release carbs which would be ideal.

As the challenge is going to take 10 to 12 hours your body has time to process the carbs during the walk. If you have a snack every 90 minutes it could help you to not hit 'the wall' which Dan speaks about.

I really don't think you need to change too much with your diet at all in the run up.

The extra few pounds that you're not carrying for 24 miles will help more than the few extra carbs you might consume.

Marathon runners are in prime physical condition weeks before their run. They carry no fat and eat exactly the right amount to get them through their daily activities.

They carb load because for a few hours they are pushing their body to it's absolute limits and they need the extra carbs. They can't consume these carbs during their run so they need to build up a store in the preceeding days.

Lee's challenge is very different mainly because it takes a lot longer. If Lee consumes some carbs 2 hours before his walk they are going to get processed in time to be used during the walk. He can be snacking 6 hours in and they'll still get used by the end.

Any thoughts on  this?

Matt

Agree with everything, i dont think carb loading is necessary, but upping his carb intake a few days before hand wont go amiss. He is currently taking on board very little.

As for the advice you give about on the day, spot on, small carb snacks every 90 mins or so. Obv time those to work around your lunch and cuppa tea stops.

I guess the point i was making was dont really push it to get to 15st (which he could achieve this week), but then regret it on saturday with absolutely nothing to give. I have done this walk, and although walking is relatively easy - you always see a tonne a people struggling on the last climb becasue they thought it was "just a walk".

so yeah - no need to carb load, but do adjust slightly from say thursday lunch/tea time.

(lee - btw - i will obv pay my sponsorship even if you dont make 15st, i just thought from day 1 you should have something of a goal, and that by doing so would increase your sponsorship)

btw 2  - if people are insisting on 15st, perhaps weigh yourself after you have done it - you might be the right side of the line :0)

Thanks loads to all three of you its really appreciated.

i take on board what you are saying sounds like sound advice.
some ideas of what to eat Thursday and Friday would be good i know higher carbs but best thing to eat?

bear in mind Friday we will be in a guest house somewhere in yorkshire and probably go out for a meal.

i don't like pasta ....lol.

thanks guy for saying you will still pay sponsorship ...i hope everyone else will follow suit. i would still love to make 15 stone and until Thursday diet will remain the same to give myself the best chance.

my final weigh in before the walk will now be Friday morning (if i am above 15 stone will weigh in after as well).

Correct.

If you have a breast of chicken with some rice - just up the amount of rice you have with it.  The protein will actually help as it slows down the digestion of the carbs (lowering the GI) - so a good thing for the few days before (and on the morning of the challenge).

The body can store energy from carbs for about 2 hours of exercise (obviously depends on the level of exercise), and if you're doing more than that (and with walking it might be a longer time I don't know) you have to be taking some on board to replace the glycogen you've used up.  This is also why a half-marathon is a completely different challenge to a full marathon.  I'd imagine it's a similar thing when comparing a shorter walk to one that's taking as many hours as this challenge will.

Those flapjack bars would probably be good, or alternatively the energy bars I have for before I run (slightly more carbs and lower protein and very little fat). Whichever you have, you'll need a drink to wash them down :D

Not all marathon runners are near peak physical condition - in fact, most aren't!!   But during a marathon you do have to consume additional carbs if you want to replenish the energy stores.

He doesn't need to change the diet dramatically, it's just slightly changing the proportions during the few days before so that slightly more the calories are from carbs than protien, rather than adding on lots of additional calories.

I haven't done anything like Lee's challenge, so don't know how it would feel after 20 miles of walking in terms of the energy demands on the body.  I'm sure he'd be able to do it with no special eating or preparation, but I'm sure he wants it to be as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.  Good socks (and maybe a spare set to change in to half-way through) are probably more important than the exact details of the diet for this week!

let's get serious now guys

just eat normally beforehand and take some sandwiches with you maybe a flapjack if you like but take a normal one from the shop. throw in some crisps, a couple of bananas and enough fluid and you'll be fine. you're not pushing your body to extremes, you're going for a walk over a few hills

I sure got anywhere near the end of the post where you wrote that. got bored after about 2 lines of you talking about carbs

Hey Lee.

These are the flapjacks that I have and I think Dan has now as well. http://www.thesupplementstore.co.uk/brands/cnp_professional/chemicalnutritionflapjacks-cnp_professional_pro_flapjacks_24_bars.htm

I think Dan found them somewhere cheaper so worth waiting for him to come along and stick his nose in as he does ;).

They all deliver next day so you don't need to panic buy.

These make really easy snacks while you're out walking.

You need slow release carbs and that's what these are.

For real food you could try any of the following:

Vegetables, eg broccoli, spinach, carrots, cauliflower, salad leaves, asparagus, green beans, cabbage, celery, squash, parsnips, swede, sweetcorn, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, peppers...and so on
Fruit, eg apples, oranges, bananas, peaches, pineapple, mangos, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, melon, pomegranate...and so on
Wholegrain flour products, eg wholemeal bread, wholgrain pasta
Wild rice, brown rice
Corn tortillas
Chappatis

This is a random list nicked off t'internet and is by no means exhaustive. Have a google of slow release carbs and see if anything appeals to your taste buds.

They don't mention oatmeal here which would make a good breakfast in the run up to your walk and is one of my favourites mixed with a protein shake.

Might be worth having a sports drink with you just in case you hit a wall but don't have it unless you need it.

As I've already said you'll get far better advice from Dan on these sort of things. I can tell you what is common sense to me but Dan will have more knowledge with his marathon training. (Although it pains me to say it)

Not long to go now!!

thanks guys to all of you,

the help and advice has been really great and is very much appreciated i would not have lost as much weight if it went for Matt ..thanks mate

i know some of you might think its just a walk over a couple of hills with nothing to worry about easy peasy.....
but for me ...no its not ,
as i try to explain at the beginning of this thread i have been lazy  unhealthy and unfit doing little or no exercise for near on 15 years.
weighing seventeen and a half stone just weeks ago.

the training and dieting i have found very hard... for a Lott of you that's normall i have never been on a diet in my life and the army pretty much told me what to eat and when to run and that was a very long time ago.

5 days till final weigh in

that's not really what I was suggesting lee though it probably sounded like it. it was a hard challenge for you at the start but you've now done the hard bit. you've hopefully dropped enough weight and done enough training that the weekend is now just a victory procession

unlike a marathon no amount of extra rice and pasta 2 days before is going to change whether you do this or not

Title: Re: sponsorship required........and training and weight updates !!
Post by: leethefish on June 12, 2011, 06:32:23 PM
up and down the first hill was really good and enjoyable for us and completed in about 2.5 hours we thought it was going to be easy !!!

the walk to the next hill was 7 miles and felt like 10 it  became apparent two of our group was struggling (Luke cattel and Chris)

so we stopped a couple of times for them and gave encouragement.

the view of the second hill.

on the way up Luke and Chris were hurting i took Chris's rucksack for a couple of miles and then we shared it between us
on the way down we also shared Luke's rucksack these two had worked and gave a lot of effort but where exhausted and Luke was struggling with his back.

me and kev at peak two

on the way down peak two we had a bit of a disaster..
our organiser and motivator Shane cattell was coming down some rocks and one gave way his ankle twisted really badly and he thought he tore a ligament and was limping so badly it took us at least 1.5 -2 hours extra to get him to a road where we flagged a car to take him to the bottom of the hill

we met up at the bottom of the hill and luke and chris decided they had no more to give and could not carry on.

and there was no way shane was going anywhere.

we all said we would do it together even if it took 24 hours "fuck it" but they could not carry on.

so then there was 4

Title: Re: sponsorship required........and training and weight updates !!
Post by: leethefish on June 12, 2011, 07:26:33 PM
after the last photo it was 5.5 miles to the finish point me and Kev were both in a lot of pain Kev's knees were hurting really badly and my hamstring and groin
the longest walk in the world...lol
we were both very determined and was never not going to finish.

total time 13.5 hours

i think it would of been quite achievable in 12 hours if it hadn't been for the accident and getting Shane down safely!

thanks for all the support and sponsorship i will sort out and post total raised in the next week or so.

i feel a great deal of personal pride and accomplishment in finishing this losing a total of 2 stone and 4lb in the process

Lee

Great achievement mate! Really glad you completed it. I was really annoyed the other day when someone said you were just "going for a walk" but didnt want to derail your thread nor efforts. Im sure you can assure him it didnt feel like an afternoon stroll!

It was a great trip report, your efforts are appreciated! Ill ship my sponsorship during the week.

I hope you found some time to enjoy it, especially at the peaks. Shame you had some drop outs, but I personally think that you will alwayts get that in a big group of inexperienced walkers.

WPWP - really glad for you.

Are you going to keep up the diet, maybe with a little more room for treats?

thanks guy and dan,

yes i did enjoy it and would never have completed this 3 months ago!

thanks for the help, advice and support you have given me its really appreciated it certainly was not an afternoon stroll !!

i am going to still get to 15 stone and not have too many treats too often as i would like to stay at this weight.

Well done Lee, we all did really well. In hindsight, with the fact that we did it all in one day, made it a tougher challenge than last year. I'm hurting more as well, that might be the extra year in age, but it doesn't matter.
That 5.5 mile home was disgusting. I'm sure that's what hasKilled my calf muscles!! lol

Well done Lee. I can say how pleased I am for you and I'm really happy to have been able to help a little bit.

This is what people pay sponsorship money for. Lot's of effort and actually putting yourself out for a good cause.

People won't mind that you didn't quite make your target. The effort was there and you didn't just want their money for nothing.

Much respect heading your way pal.

Matt

Stick to the healthy diet, combined with regular exercise and you'll soon make your target.

If you're anything like me, you need something to aim for to motivate you to exercise. So look for another challenge to do later in the year and train towards that.

i was thinking just this..

Legs being sore is a good thing. Enjoy it.

Your next effort doesn't have to be a charity gig, just set yourself another challenge. Plenty of walks about, just ask technolog on here as he's done a fair few and is based in Leicester.

Where did you stay overnight?

Where did you park while you did the walk?

Was the route easy to follow?

Was there anywhere to refill water bottles / buy drinks?

we stayed at a b&b about 15 miles away was nice 35pp pn
was OK for me and my nephew we shared a room ...the other 5 had to share same price  i run good lol....

we parked at a car park next to the  Pen-y-ghent Cafe in Horton-in-Ribblesdaleich which is the official start point.

loads and loads of people doing the same walk and you basically don't need a map just follow on they sell maps in the cafe but you really don't need one.

at the base of peak two  there is a refreshment van next to the viaduct also after peak two on the way to three another that even sells spare socks.

nowhere to fill up water bottles if you drink allot and don't want to carry allot could buy from these vans or use the streams perhaps take water purification tablets if you was going to do this.

mat,
there was hundreds doing it mate i think at weekends its always busy march til Oct at a guess.

Bump again.

Have you given up Lee. No problem if you have just interested.

i haven't given up as such ...but again the motivation thing is a struggle

in the weeks leeding up to my walk i had a proper goal i really wanted to be 15 stone and more importantly i wanted to complete the challenge for my charity.

i enjoyed posting my diet... and it helped so much to the fact i don't think i would of completed it without doing it.

during the walk i pushed myself to the absolute limit  and really really suffered because of this i was limping around two weeks after !!

and something in the back of my brain keeps saying well you can eat this because its over you done it....its strange.

i really appreciate the help you have all given me especially you Matt but i think i now need a new challenge to give me the motivation.

i am still watching what i eat for e.g

i only have one sugar in my tea ....little things
i have a proper lunch .....a chicken or tuna sandwich (wholemeal bread)
a proper meal with the family
bananas for snacks

but i do have the odd chocolate bar and odd bag of crisps

one of the main things i have got out of this is that i know i can lose weight if i put in 100% effort..... i think one week i lost 5 pounds or something ..now that is massive.

i got to admit its nice to be able to have an ice cream and not have to post the fact ...lol

.....oh i almost forgot George your a tw@t

It's going to be kind of difficult for us to win Lee, I suspect you have inside information.

i was thinking .....
no one else apart from me knows my weight at the min... you all assume the worst and so you should it ain't pretty.
i have weighed myself this morning and took a photo of scales
how about ..

£5 per guess i will need a min of ten guesses guesses to be made via p.m

closest to weight gets £50

any more than ten guesses and the balance goes onto my sponsorship page.

fuck off George

You mean like sponsorship for getting fatter rather than for getting thinner?  ;)

I'd guess you're heavier than you should be.  Am I right?

I think you need to enter another event - a walk, run, climb, something.  That's what I have to do to keep me motivated, otherwise it's all too easy to say "I'll do it tomorrow" or find other excuses.  When you know tomorrow is another day closer to the date of the challenge and you know you can't 'cram' it all in at the end, then you find yourself getting out of bed at a silly time to do a run, you find it easier to eat well - and the benefit of that is that you feel better too!

So, what's it gonna be?

Well done Andrew. I might try that. Do I need to buy that book or is there an online guide?

How did you get your bikes to the coast and back from the other coast? (That part sounds like a pain in the posterior)

There is a few different ways to do it, we had a big group so had a minibus carry our bags to the next B+B each night and then they took us back to the start on the last day with our bikes in a trailer at the back.

Guys in small groups normally just get the train back across after, of course if your a glutton for punishment you can cycle back, 2 in our group did that  :o

As regards the guide just look online, the route is pretty well marked most of the way, you just need to be aware what signs your looking for as there is more than one route and it splits at various points en-route.
