Title: Where, when and who?
Post by: TightEnd on February 09, 2015, 05:54:40 PM
Name the ground

Name the teams

Name the year

Maine Road, 1969, City vs Spurs?

Groves appears to be a Manchester-based brewery that went bust in '71. Striped kit looks like the City kit of the period. Went lateral with Leicester's last FA Cup final appearance, semi would have been at a neutral ground (none of this Wembley malarkey) and their quarter final was at home.

Zero out of three?

Maine Road, Manchester City both correct. Colin Bell and Mke Doyle in the photo

Year and opponent both wrong (and much more difficult)

Is it Fenerbache 1968?

Is it Fenerbache 1968?

No, afraid not

obviously you are in the right era

Title: Re: Where, when and who?
Post by: swinebag22 on February 09, 2015, 07:08:53 PM
Fenerbache is a terrible shout, thinking about it. Playing in Europe would possibly explain the use of away kit at home but it clearly looks like daylight in the pic so not a Euro tie so don't know

Pitch seems in decent nick so possibly a preseason friendly. I'm going for Napoli or Lazio who turned up without an away kit.

Year: 1970

its a competitive match, 1971

but who against?

getting the competition would be part of it...

(no googling yet)

Title: Re: Where, when and who?
Post by: Archer on February 09, 2015, 08:39:18 PM
I would have said the City player in the background was Neil Young not Doyle.

I'm going for a European Cup Winners Cup game even if it was played during the day.

Leeds?

Don't remember them having trim on the shirts but the No 2 looks like Paul Reaney

Title: Re: Where, when and who?
Post by: RedFox on February 10, 2015, 01:25:59 PM
This has kept me going for ages.

I was thinking along same lines as David with no2 looking like Paul Reaney but the shirts are more Liverpool and could the fulback be Chris Lawler or possibly could ian Callaghan have played there at any time?

Havnt a clue who the guy in the middle facing the goal is tho.

Anyway without googling im stumped.

you need to think a lot more obtuse than Division one sides at the time

i can answer questions to give clues

your collective task is to get the team before you ask ten questions

Is it Wigan?

They got to the third round once when they were about 4 divisions below the league structure and were knocked out at City - sure that was the year Arsenal did the double.

he's been on a tour of the leicestershire non league teams

quorn, hinckley now shepshed dynamo

a fantastic talent when he was younger, what a player he would have been if he was a few inches taller, but went off the rules with booze and gambling

Well I can see, I think, "Yiewsley Steel" & "Phoenix (?) Brewery", & one that says "Southern" something, but not much else.

Still, "built up area", that helps, it means it is near or in a Town, which narrows it down significantly.

no

neither of the venues shown are first class/league grounds in their respective sport, but were.

here is the cricket ground in its pomp, shown from the football ground end. it might be reintroduced to the first class schedule at some stage, there is a feasibility study currently underway

the football ground end is one of the very few double sided sporting stands, designed by Leitch. Headingley, Leeds was another ground that had one

Bradford? Park avenue Footy club?

thats it

it held 306 first class and 48 list A cricket matches between 1881 and 1996

" The club left Park Avenue in 1973, selling it for financial reasons. After going bust and reforming as a Sunday league team in 1975, the club returned to what was left of Park Avenue in season 1987–88. However they had to vacate the ground at the end of the season when an indoor cricket centre was built on part of the pitch. Bradford Park Avenue was reformed as a semi-professional club late in 1987 and now play at Horsfall Stadium."

The only correct guess so far is Newcastle

they are the away team, in this game from 1953

1953 is a crucial part of guessing this, for the competition pictured (which is no longer played) is part of solving the puzzle

you are looking for the home team (white sleeves) and ground now

the ground is still used, but is of course much changed

Title: Re: Where, when and who?

The shape of it is very like the kop at hillsborough before it was roofed and then seated.

It looks like it's the side of the pitch though that would rule it out.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/fraserpettigrew/4388245088/in/set-72157624235775804

I assume this guy has the original photo.

The old East Terrace in its pomp.

This was one of the annual pre-season Edinburgh Charities Day fundraising matches played between an Edinburgh select and a top English side every year between 1944 and 1962, alternately at Easter Road and Tynecastle. By 1963 the fixture must have run out of steam as no English side could be lured north and Dunfermline Athletic made a half-hearted trip across the Forth to be walloped 7-0 at Tynecastle.

Initially when I came across this photo (can't remember where I got it from now) it was labelled as Edinburgh v Newcastle, 1 August 1959 but I now think this is wrong and it is actually the match played in 1955. By 1959 both teams had adopted the fashion for collarless v-necked strips. The button-up collars worn here were only worn up until 57 in Hibs' case and 58 in Newcastle's.

According to the 1955 match programme the lineups were:
Edinburgh
Marshall (Hearts ) Grant, McLelland, Preston, Plenderleith (all Hibs ) Cumming ( Hearts ) Scott ( Hibs ) Murray, Bauld (Captain )Wardhaugh ( all Hearts ) & Ormond (Hibs )

Newcastle
Harvey, Keith & Mc Michael , Scoular Stokoe & Mitchell, Taylor , Eastham , White Allchurch & McGuigan.

Ref was Tiny Wharton

Millmoor rotherhams old ground.

Great memories of being on that away end watching Wednesday.

I remember being about 7 or 8 when my dad said we were going shopping for school clothes, only to go over the bridge and see Millmoor and saw Wednesday winning there.

Remember one year in late seventies,  Roger Wylde curling in a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. Loved going to away games then.

Apart from whatever that is in the bottom left corner, it's not really changed that much round there.

The school and all those houses are still there now, which is the reason the ground can't be expanded beyond its current capacity of about 37.

Yeah - out beside the new Crossrail station at Old Oak Common, but there's an issue with getting ownership of the required land, and then there's going to be the further issue of relegation, massive fines and Tony Fernandes losing interest.

F**b**t Street? :)

Filbert Street saw its record attendance of 47,298 for the Fifth Round FA Cup tie, against Tottenham Hotspur, on 18 February 1928.
This game also saw many more spectators watch the match from the roof of the Filbert Street end

the photo became famous in stadia geekland for the image of the lady climbing the rope to get up onto the flooodlight

47,000+ was quite the crowd. even before the taylor report later capacity was 32,000 and 20,000 subsequently

of course behind are the terraced houses, the reason why the club eventually moved as 2 of 36 hpouseholders refused to be bought up by the club....

Fulham needed to win to go up

Derby needed a point to stay up

derby scored with 15 to go

there was a small pitch invasion

rest of match platyed out with fans just off the touchline

with 2 minutes left the ref blew for a foul. fans though it was the final whistle. pandemonium

game was not restarted, result stood

Malcolm Macdonald the fulham manager waged a campaign to get the game replayed, but failed. a year later they went down and he was sacked

Remember that open terrace and toilet now.  Lost 4-1.  Michael Gilks scored a couple for them and they had Shaka Hislop in goal.  Think it might have also seen Kevin Phillips first ever career goal (or one of his first ones).

Burnley beat Liverpool 1-0

the Athletics stadium is now on the site, and some banking and a few posts aside there is no evidence of the football ground as was

here is a view of the stadium in 1905 when over 101,000 withnessed that cup final

I was trying to work out what was running round the outside as the coreners looked too weird for speedway and greyhounds, but wikipedia can help.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerton_Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerton_Park)

The tight track meant that turf had to be brought on to make the corner flag area for football matches and removed once the match had finished.

Only been Vale once for a speed awareness course.  Didn't look anything like that.

Must be WBA then.  Cant be villa.

Could be the old stoke ground but that was before my time of living near Stoke.

Is that Chris Balderstone ?.

No idea why it was unusual.

it is

On Monday 15th September 1975 he played cricket for Leicestershire against Derbyshire at Chesterfield and at close of play he was 51 not out.

A quick drive to Belle Vue followed and he played for Doncaster Rovers in the evening in a 1-1 draw against Brentford in the Fourth Division.

The following morning he was back playing cricket, finishing his innings on 116 and taking 3 wickets for 28 runs to help win the County Championship for Leicestershire for the first time.

On August 14th 1980 Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground hosted the first senior day-night match in England, Essex against the West Indies. An artificial pitch was laid but a football pitch is not the ideal shape for cricket. Being long and thin it was an easy matter to hit sixes to the short boundaries - Graham Gooch hit a century in just 77 minutes (which back then was a big thing, not so much now) and in one 18-minute spell Viv Richards scored 53 runs.

A crowd of 11,073 made it a successful experiment, so much so that when Chelsea played Wrexham two days later in their opening Football League fixture of the season the chant of 'We want cricket' was heard during the slower moments of the game.

I was at this match as a teenager. a friend and his family lived on the fulham palace road and took me along. we bumped into joel garner in the corridor of the east stand behind the exec boxes. garner could not walk standing to his full height and had to walk along neck cricked so low was the ceiling. he was still massive. like a giant redwood.

A month later, on 17th September 1980 an England XI (including Botham, Gooch, Boycott and Gatting) played the Rest of the World (including Richards, Gavaskar, Lloyd and Marshall) in a 40-over match at Bristol City's Ashton Gate Ground. A crowd of 7925 made it a profitable venture but the experiment didn't bring a lasting union between the sports with the major cricket grounds getting their own floodlights.

so, as part of the promotion of the stamford bridge match, there was some pr photo opps

name the 5 in this picture

The ground is either Anfield or Goodison imo - Dingwall Motors in the background still exists and I used to walk past it most days on my way to the train station to/from work in Liverpool before I learned to drive. I want to say Goodison because of all the housing around it but I'm not that clued up on Anfield housing situations in the 50's.

Some of them had 15 foot fences in front of them as well.  Pretty sure it isn't that ground though from memory.  Highest away fence i ever saw in my life at that ground.  Only went once.  Tighty might have been there.  Alan Smith's last ever game for Leicester in the late 80's.

A World Cup in the 1950's, is almost certainly right, but not very helpful.
Is it Billy Wright?

That's easy for you to say, I wasn't born then!
The opponent looks very angry and emotional, as the calm Englishman strolls past him. Is he French?

Title: Re: Where, when and who?

it was belgium (specifically marcel dries)

http://www.11v11.com/matches/england-v-belgium-17-june-1954-226379/

a 4-4 draw

england took the lead in the 91st minute and a dickinson own goal made it 4-4 in the 94th

they then played extra time, no more goals and it finished 4-4!

I didn't go inside.  I was eating next door and noticed people swimming on the way back up the stairs.  It didn't look neglected but i could only see through the gaps.   They open it to the public in July and August for swims and picnics.

For those that haven't got it, it is famous as the set of the Kylie video for "Slow".

Not the Scottish team though, although it may have included some Scots.

At that time, all army personnel would have been obliged to sport a moustache. That only stopped during the first world war.

It is the army before the first ever game between Army and Navy.

Before the game was an annual thing, this was a one off at the Kensington Oval in 1878.

The Broad Arrow, a contemporary newspaper, described it thus:

Quote
A fine exhibition of football delighted the somewhat small number of spectators. Bush scored the first try for the Navy from a scrummage near the line. The goal was kicked by Orford. A band of naval spectators who had taken up their position beneath a white ensign mounted on the roof of a drag greeted this score with great cheering. The greasy state of the ground was not favourable for any great display of running. Encouraged by a cry from their supporters 'Come on Navy, Force the Passage of the Straights' the Navy mounted great pressure and scored a touch down. In the second half the Navy scored a second try. Wrench of the Army took advantage of some bad passing by the Navy and scored the Army try: The goal was kicked but this ended the scoring and the Navy deservedly won the first match between the Services.

It just makes me realise how pitches have improved out of all recognition.

Does anyone recall what pitches used to be like? The penalty area was mostly mud, and there'd be a furrow along the touchline where the linesmen used to run up & down.

It was pretty rare to see much grass on a pitch after December.

Now, even in mid-winter, the pitches are perfect, no mud, strong grass growth, almost like a crown green bowling surface.

not wanting to be too dull, but grass technology has come on a lot. many of the pitches have artifciial components alongside the grass

stadium surface business is huge, and extremely competitive

Ahhh , muddy pitches.

Rivers of piss flowing down the conrete terracing,

Those lovely spitting contests through the fence,

The open roofed toilets,

The surge down the terrace ,

Blokes pushing tea urns filled with hot chocolate or Bovril round the pitch,

Half time scores manually marked on a scorecard,

Arriving an hour before the game and having to queue,

Players numbered one to eleven,

Hard tackles ,

Retaliation not simulation,

Twisting and turning to free your arms to clap,

Non stop singing of so many different songs ensuring hoarseness for a couple of days,

Denim ,Air Wair and scarves tied to wrists,

And the little blue disabled cars.

It was certainly different and somehow a little more real.
