It's these same players who were so awfull under Berti m8 so clearly it's all down to the tactical genius Walter Smith.

I would doubt it. what wattie has done is to return the players to their comfort zone. BV attempted to get the team to play outwith their technical capabilities, and systems that they didnt understand.
When wattie came in, he reverted to more tried and tested methods. He has done well to give the players back their self belief, and seems to have a decent harmony about the squad, for which he should be applauded.
But where is the tactical "genius" in playing 4-4-2, or 4-5-1. Hardly ground breaking stuff is it
