If finishing about Man City and Spurs is the limit of your ambition, then times are pretty tough.

Man Utd and Chelseas team without there  top 2 players>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Liverpools team without Gerrard and Torres.

Yes, that's pretty obvious. When you spend that much more that is going to be the case.

Serious question, what should be Liverpool's realistic ambition be as things stand? I am not talking about this season as such but generally.

I think you have to first and foremost sort out the off the field issues. New onwers, new stadium etc. You know the weeks after we won the Champions League in 2005 Rick "the idiot" Parry signed us up to a sponsorship deal with Carlsberg for £8m a season and at the same time Man U were signing up for £18m a season. Only now have we gotten Standard Chartered on board for £20m per season as it should be. Financially we were in the dark ages before Hicks and Gillett. We have one of the top 3/5 fan bases worldwide and a 45,000 seater stadium. It's a joke.

In the meantime if we can win the league then great (and hopefully bag a trophy or two along the way) - but make no mistake it would be a minor miracle to do it with the landscape of the EPL as it is. I think this point is lost on more or less everyone who isn't a Liverpool fan - no offence.

Financially Arsenal are in a similar spot to us but further ahead developmentally - CL qualification is by far the most important thing whilst they pay off their stadium. Once that is done they'll have by far the largest income of an EPL club and can be in a position to dominate with an estimated £50m disposable income per season.

Realistically ... Top 4 and champions league.   surely even the mickiest of mousers cannot really expect more.

I would take the fairs cup right now. Wink

Lol...might not have been the case either but for a blatant dive. I don't particularly enjoy gaining points from shit like that...

Nothing against Liverpool but its a real shame the top 4 give you champions league spots, it means teams can be happy to come 2nd 3rd or 4th and it's all wrong. How can a team as big as Liverpool accept coming runners up as good?

It's not accepted by Reds fans - but to say finishing as runners up, considering our resources, is a bad thing is a bit ott.

This "considering our resources" thing is baffling me a bit.

Rafa spent £200mill on players since he came in.

Chelsea, by comparison, spent £225 mill between 2005 and 2007. (according to http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2321598/Jose-Mourinhos-transfer-spending-at-Chelsea.html )

Arsenal obv ridic low

http://arsenal-mania.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31663

I couldn't find ManU transfer spending for the past few years but only had a quick look TBF.

All above figures might have some faults in them but as indicators of what's been spent it's close enough to show that Rafa had plenty of resources available. He's just not spent it very well.

NET is the key.  Chelsea haven't had to sell players to fund new ones.

Look at the net spend.

Yes, OK.  We'll leave it as that, even though it's a useless metric.

Looks like Johnson picked up an injury on Monday as well amongst the others.  Sigh.
