Said it at the time. Not an after thought. He wasn't worth it at the time, even if he was on fire now I would have said the same. 30 million was treble top dollar

Difficult to criticise Liverpool too much for signing AC at the time. Easier to do now. At the time they were losing their abs talisman and superstar terrace idol. There was no choice but to replace him with somebody else capable of filling the void. At the time AC was an abs talisman and superstar terrace idol breaking into the England team. To wrestle such a player away means paying top dollar and young british talent always commands a further premium. I don't know how many talisman type players were available to Dalglish at the time, esp from the prem. He could have spent £20m on a foreign player unproven in the league but I don't think that would have been any better a gamble than AC. Still long way to go but needs to get his head down imo.

Normally I think you speak a fair bit of sense and people smack you up. But to say AC was an abs talisman and superstar terrace idol (OK in a really narrow provincial waaaaaayy sense he mighta been) is abs piff. He shouldn't be at any of the top clubs even if he was on a free. Doh, forgot this was Liverpool.

Anyway, decided not to join yous and am lookin at the Manchester area for my new team.

Yo, I'm talking sense and you're smacking me up Wink

I would define an abs talisman and terrace idol as a player you have to pay x amount over and above market value for to pacify the fans. Eg ManU being required to pay a British record for Andy Cole and Keegan having to explain himself outside the ground. I was reading some toon forums at the time and at £25m they were like no way and calling Mike Ashley a fat bastard. Admittedly they don't need much encouragement to call Mike Ashley a fat bastard. But at £35m it seemed even the most hardened supporter couldn't knock that sort of business. Thus if we accept George's true valuation of AC at £10m then the extra £25m is for what? It's the premium you pay on top of the market value for a terrace idol talisman. If he goes on to be a talisman player at Liverpool it would be good business for Liverpool in the long run. Thus the extra £25m defines AC as an abs talisman of his club at that time. If Liverpool didn't define AC as an abs talisman type player at the time then I would agree it's terrible business.

Maybe too early to say but Carroll looks like a dud. Was ridiculous spending that amount of money on an unproven striker who basically had a good season in the championship and half a decent season in the prem. This whole "well technically he cos us nothing cos we got 50 million for Torres hahahahaha" doesn't hide the fact that, at 30 million, you've done your dough. He was worth 10 million TOPS

Economically speaking the dough isn't done at all. That's reserved for 30m deals on 29 year olds who have huge wages and no resale value....

Agree with this, Downing deal was worse than Carroll, Carrol could be World Class, paying a price that would represent him being that now was crazy but it may well pay off, I certainly wouldn't right Carroll off.

Pretty different buying a 23 year old with massive potential to a 29 yo who's most likely already peaked and has 2 maybe 3 seasons left in him.

BTW, you know someone on Stars called Flangepoker ?

You wont see any target man peak at 23. If he sells for £20-25m in 6 years he wont have cost much.

The buying of Berbatov is financially speaking far worse.

"...Kenny Dalglish has lost only one of his last 53 matches at Anfield as Liverpool manager…"

Just saying.

Yeah, drawn a few too many - but it's hardly the crisis that it's often made out to be.

The players just need to learn how to score goals now...
