BREAKING: Liverpool are set to sign Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen for £9.75 million

Liverpool are set to sign Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen after activating a £9.75m release clause in his contract.

Brendan Rodgers has been chasing the Germany Under-21 international for a while and has been over to personally check on the player's progress.

The 20-year-old is an energetic box-to-box midfielder and should provide the Reds with extra impetus in the middle of the park.

That'll be quite a coup.  Bayern wanted him back apparently (a buy-back clause they can activate next year or something?) and then there was a sticking point over his wages.  Looks like all that might be sorted.

I believe he can also play centre back - which makes him additionally versatile for Liverpool.

Jan Aage-Fjortoft(sp??) on twitter said that he wouldn't make your current side any better.

Personally i prefer the purchase of him to that of Lallana. Definate plus to our midfield.

No doubt that Lallana is 3-5 years further on than Can in terms of development tho.

Different player. We need a central midfielder like him, especially as Lucas seems to be a fraction of the player he was.

Lallana would obviously be beneficial to the side, but isn't the pressing issue in terms of where the team needs strengthening, imo.

Can deal looks like it's been done. Not seen enough of him to be able to make a proper judgement. Seems pretty pricey though. Fingers crossed.

£10m for a 20-year old German U 21 midfielder who can play pretty much anywhere in the midfield or defence? If he was English, he'd be priced at a lot more than that I'd imagine.

Sounds like a bargain. Hope he's as average as Henderson.

So no additional 'news' there then? If Lallana wants the move, he can put in a transfer request. If not, it looks like he'll be staying put.

Possibly will turn out like him

Difference being can you afford a player to perform poorly for a season or two now you are aiming for at least top 4 and europe?

Lallana wants the move. He has made that clear to the board. He is reluctant to put in a transfer request due to the message it sends out to the fans and, more importantly, the financial implications it has on what Southampton have to pay him when the transfer completes.

The £25 million bid that Liverpool tabled is actually far from that. Nearly 50% of that is related to performance related pay and 25% of any upfront fee has to go to Bournemouth so at the current deal - it sees Saints left with less than £10 million and not able to strengthen. They want the deal restructured to properly reflect the value of the player.

Couple that with the fact the board promised not to sell any players without a new manager being in charge. Hand was forced with Lambert but Shaw/Lallana are going to be forced to wait.

The only reason he won't join Liverpool is if Liverpool turn attentions elsewhere and sign someone before the world cup ends. Expect it all to be completed after the world cup now.

Lambert certainly runs good.

Back in January he was all ready to have a medical at West Ham before completing a £9m deal, only for Osvaldo to headbutt Fonte during training at Saints.  Osvaldo was suspended (although there were rumours that the headbutt was a pre-meditated action to force a move), and the Lambert deal was canned.

Lambert was pretty unhappy that the deal collapsed, which is one of the reasons why Saints have done the deal with Liverpool prior to the World Cup and filling the vacant manager position, which goes against their stance with other potential transfers.

So, Lambert is now playing in the World Cup and gets to turn out for his boyhood team next season.

Saints are out of pocket by a few million (as there will be add-ons to the £4m reported fee), but it's all worked out well for Lambert in the end.
