You might do well in that sort of comp, I could see a couple here would have to pull out with wrist injuries.

I've done the great north half marathon 4 times, since then I have lost all fitness and would get tired running for a bus! People of my build are not desinged for running! I was thinking the other day how i could motivate myself, was even thinking about aiming for a full marathon at some point.

I'm up for getting involved in this. How's this going to work? Will someone come and boot me if I miss a session?

I might be up for this, prior to poker I was in really good nick and ran the sheffield half marathon every year, then poker arrived (as did a long term girlfriend) and I got a bit podgy.

I was talking to young Ms Mason in Ireland about this, I think I would be more motivated if I could have a sizable bet with someone that I could lose X amount, or lose more than X person. Anyone fancy laying me odds? I'd look like Fabio if there was money on it.

Mind you, this is a charity thread, shouldnt take away from that really.

We need to decide on a Half Marathon then guys

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=uk+half+marathons+2008&meta=

Looks like some of them are very popular and get oversubscribed. Maybe we should try to choose one that isn't so popular so we all get a place??? I'm happy to go pretty much anywhere but it's probably fairest to find one near the middle of the country??? Obv I'm new to this so if anyone has any ideas please let us know. I think it's important to get something organised asap so we don't loose momentum and end up not bothering.

I think prop bets are an excellent way to get motivated.

Good point. The great North Run is the biggest (and therefore best) but is well oversubscibed. I suggest a nice flat course and something of interest. The silverstone one looks good to me!

Perhaps worth doing a 10k run in late december too, just to check how the form is going!

Unless Dale wants to race, he can f**k right off, probably turning up on the day and kicking the Kenyan's ass if there's money on it.  Cheesy

I've done the Silverstone 1/2 marathon - and it is a flat course, but not the most exciting.  After the initial buzz of thinking that you're running on an F1 track, it soon feels like any other, but with not a lot of scenery.

It is central though and anyone who applied would be guaranteed a place.

I went from not being able to run non-stop for more than 5 minutes (even though I did various sports running requires a different sort of fitness), to 8 months later being able to run the London Marathon.  That was back in 2004, and since then I haven't run another marathon (I haven't been able to get back in to the London Marathon as it's done via a ballot - like APAT), but I've run lots of 10Ks and half marathons.

Saying that, since I've started playing poker my exercise levels have dropped (for some reason it's harder to get up at 6 in the morning after playing poker until the early hours).  I've missed out on a place for London 4 years in a row (I got my initial place through running for a charity), and I think that I'm guaranteed a place in 2009, but hopefully I get in next year's.  So I'm going to start running regularly again to get ready for next April.

Anyone can do a marathon.  It just requires a lot of time and dedication to build up the miles.  A half marathon requires a lot of training, but is far less demanding than a marathon.  A 10K run is about half the distance again - and to be honest requires far less training and is far easier to achieve.  Maybe the plan should be to aim for some 10K runs in the winter, followed by the half marathon in early spring?  Then those who want to run London will also be ready to do that in April.

Fantastic Idea mate. I am deffo in mate, would be about 4 stone up also. What about a weekly weigh in or something similar and Individual prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and most weight loss etc. Come on Tikay.

Even for Charity, that's a bit much I think.

They are actually a lot of fun.  I have done 5 half marathons over the years.  One day I will do a full one, but I need to do a bit more training before I even think about that.  At the moment I do about 40 minutes most days.  I know a guy who has done the London event and numerous other events around the World. He is in his middle 50's, but in terms of fitness he is far fitter than people half his age.  I ran with him once about 6 months ago while I bumped into him while out running,  after a few miles I felt sick because he was pushing so hard.  Running is a great way for the body to stay young and healthy

Good idea. Stick the runners in a minibus, drive them 13 miles away from the casino, then leave them to make their own way back.
